Shap Wells Hotel

Stayed here several times, even a couple of times when they had only just re opened following each of the Covid lockdowns and always enjoyed, had a fab welcome and the rooms are clean. Not saying its perfect for everyone as some of you will not be a fan of the gold and red decor in the rooms , reception and corridors. But its not shabby its just old fashioned. The bathrooms are moden and the bar and restaurant have had a face lift with a not ultra moden colour scheme of cream and blue but it suits the building style. Dont expect spa, gym or pool and dont expect room service or cocktails. But you will always get a warm and friendly welcome and service. The setting is off the beat and track , but worth finding this gem, at the side of the woods , with stream running over waterfall and rock oh and keep your eyes peeled for red squirrels. Food is good at breakfast though no veggie sausages which some did complain about, food is good value in the evening though a limited choice of 4 starters 4 mains and 4 puds including a veggie option. Yorkshire portions for the main and loads of veg. Bar prices higher than pub prices but not that bad for a hotel.

it was great to have a snooker table..they need to put a new cloth on. its old and tatty...xx

Second stay at shap wells hotel but this time we stayed in the family room and was very nice and the breakfast was just great

Thoroughly enjoyed our 4 nights at Shap Wells, on a coach tour of the Lake District. Room very clean and our request for lower floor and walk in shower was accommodated. Food was lovely and plenty of choice. The staff were very helpful, especially the Manager. Loved the decor and the hotel grounds and wild life.

Having stayed at this Hotel many times over the years one can say it still delivers its promise. Breakfast was very good as usual but dinner did come short of the expected level in choice and quality.

Not a modern "cookie cutter" hotel, it had squeaky floorboards, very comfortable beds and great staff

Shap Wells took us in at the last minute after we had been stuck in gridlocked traffic on the M6 for 8 hours, en route to Scotland. All of the staff were friendly and helpful and made us feel very welcome after our ordeal. A good cooked breakfast set us up for our onward journey. Also, great place to see red squirrels in the neighbouring woods.

If you like a Travel Lodge and every room to be the same then this hotel isnt for you - but if you want authenticity, character, roaring fires, classic Lake District scenery, red squirrels, exceptional food - wonderfully warm hospitality attentive staff - then you can't fault this amazing hotel! As a family weve been visiting for over 40 years ... thankyou for making our weekend so special
