We stayed here while visiting family nearby. We booked a family room as that was all that was available. In the day we were due to arrive John called us and asked if we would like to stay in the horsebox as it was just us and the hound. We'll, what a treat, lovely little lounge and a comfy bedroom, with a pretty terrace and a hot tub! We did not use the tub as it was raining. We ate with family in the evening and the food was amazing. John was o hand cooking and he was in and out of the kitchen personally checking everything was okay for the guests, could not have felt more welcome or at home. Fabulous stay, would recommend the horsebox, we will definitely be making a return visit 😊

I stayed at this hotel at short notice (literally had my Peterborough hotel room cancel on me on arrival!). I stayed in a log cabin with my own lounge and hot tub! Nothing like watching the red kites overhead whilst soaking at 40 degrees! I was woken up by the local residents snuffling around outside my room to see a bunch of lovely piggies! Didn’t have time for a cooked breakfast which is a crying shame as it looked fab!!!

We visited here for an 18th birthday meal. The atmosphere was immediately welcoming and quirky. The staff were attentive and the chef walked talked us through the specials board. Four courses of perfection. Stunning, stunning, stunning. Good value for money too. A must visit.

I’ll talk about the room first. The host was lovely, but the room was gross! There was dead bugs squashed all over the walls, dog hairs in the bed, black mould in the bathroom, 2 huge cracks in the shower basin, hairs in the bathroom sink and shower. The two cups and two glasses provided in the room were all dirty! Overall the room was really dirty and I wouldn’t stop here again for that reason. On the night I arrived the wait for the food was nearly 50 mins. However the host did apologise and provide free homemade crisps. In the morning breakfast is supposed to begin at 8 but they weren’t set up and once again it took nearly an hour for our cooked breakfast to arrive. The food was delicious and the staff were friendly and attentive. But they really do need to quicken the service up and give the rooms a deep clean and refresh!

If you are someone who knows what they want from a hotel and enjoys a sleek and sophisticated stay - don't book at the Dog in a Doublet! However if your idea of fun is to be welcomed by 4 piglets running free then this is definitely somewhere not to be missed. The atmosphere is relaxed, the decoration is esoteric and the food is delicious. The owners have put more than time into this much loved hotel, they have put their hearts and souls plus their unique characters. Life in the hospitality industry is particularly difficult right now with soaring costs and staff shortages so do go with the attitude that everyone is doing their best despite the challenges. So if you have to wait a while for something or not everything is as perfect as you or your hosts would like, so what?! You are going to have a great time if you are prepared to muck in and realise that right now every small business needs your support and in return you will enjoy a totally one off experience. In a dramatic landscape and with a history that goes back hundreds of years, we enjoyed a stay that we will be regaling our friends and family with for a long time to come. Thank you to everyone at the Dog in a Doublet and hopefully we will return again next time we are in the area.

We stayed here for one night in August whilst visiting some friends who live nearby. We checked in around 4pm with no issues, we were in room 1 above the pub. On first appearance the room seemed quirky but nice, the bed was large and quite comfy. The tiles on the bathroom floor were damaged and covered with a bath mat but we weren't too bothered by this. We got settled in and had a look on the balcony, then we realised that there was no key to our balcony and we were unable to lock the door. I went downstairs to the bar and they said they would look for the key for us. Around 40 minutes later, we wanted to go out and be back with our friends for a few hours so we went downstairs again to ask about the balcony key. We did feel a little silly and like we were inconveniencing the staff, however as two young women in an unfamiliar area, we did not feel comfortable staying in a room with an external door that did not lock (or even close properly). They still could not locate the key, but agreed to move us to room 2. Room 2 was bigger and I think it was probably supposed to be more expensive, it was nicely decorated and the bathroom was bigger too. The floor was quite slanted which was a little strange but didn't impact on our stay. This room had a balcony too, however this one was fully locking and we had a key to it. We slept reasonably well, the bed was average and we had no complaints. As we were sleeping above the pub we were concerned about noise but it wasn't bad at all and we had no issues sleeping. Checkout was easy but we did have to loiter around the bar for quite a while before someone came to see us. We didn't try any food or entertainment in the pub so we are unable to comment on this. We would stay here again for the odd night whilst visiting friends, as long as we had a guarantee of having a locking balcony door!

Attended the Dog in a doublet last night for the Elvis event. We arrived at 6.15pm and as we were staying the night, shown our room by a lovely staff member. Went down at 7.30pm for the event. Got drinks at the bar and were shown to our table. The event ticket was £20pp and knowing how much it costs for acts and to be able to cover additional staff for such an event, we didn't expect a great deal, but the meal surpassed our expectations. Home made fries, 1/2 handmade burger, a huge pork rib and chicken wings with the best BBQ sauce I have ever tasted followed by individual homemade trifle. Great performance by Alan Ennis as Elvis. Looking around at other attendees, I believe the evening was a great success. This place is a credit to it's owners, John and Della, and their staff. Oh and super dog friendly.

Came for Elvis night. Looked amazing. Had to queue to get in and be shown to our table as there was only 1 waitress and 1 bar staff. Table was sticky and the "shabby chic" effect tables look more like just plain tatty, they are worn a d tired now.. please put some covers on! Chairs rickety and stained. The bar has poor selection of larger, all of which was flat as heck. Coke and Lemonade are poured from supermarket bottles so this was flat as heck too. We thought we were coming for a meal and a show, but to be served HALF a burger, a rib and a couple of pitiful chicken wings with some skinny fries was bad enough, but it was all COLD and we waited 1.5hrs from being seated to being served. Food sent out on chipped plates, forks on table not clean... its a mess... clearly they have no idea on how to run a restaurant or a bar or they have just lost the will.... We saw one man complaining to the chef and sent all their meals and beers back. Elvis was really pretty good. Definately see him again but not here. The place is brilliant in decor but they really need to spruce it up, clean it and learn how to send out hot food and decent beer.
