We booked a spa day & afternoon tea, on booking there was no details of timings, other than to arrive at 10am. On booking, there was no mention of the ongoing hotel refurbishment, which i think should have been advised. Refurbishment is badly needed, the carpets in the corridors are trip hazards, the paint work is all chipped and the place smells really damp, a few dehumidifiers were being used (guessing to mask the smells, but not really working) Staff at reception were pleasant enough, but it all felt a bit disorganised and we were asked to pay for the day, even though we had paid in full on booking. The changing rooms smelled of damp, it was cramped, not much room to get ready and the showers flooded the floor. The leisure facilities were ok, def not 5 star experience. The jacuzzi with 4 people in it, was super cramped and the heated beds didn’t work. Afternoon tea was fairly good, although staff left us waiting to get seated, lots of staff chatting in another room, they could see us but no one came out to seat us, it then took another 30 mins to be served and this meant rushing the food as the hotel had booked our treatments in for after the afternoon tea. During this tîme in the grand hall whilst still waiting on food (we were the only guests at this time, with around ten members of staff walking in and out) a manager from the hotel was having a heated discussion with the contractor, which seemed really unprofessional. The treatments were nice and def a highlight. Overall really underwhelmed with Mar Hall, it felt like customers were an inconvenience to staff and overall pretty grotty, just because the place is being refurbished, a lick of paint and cleaning should not be neglected. Do not recommend as I have now read reviews from July, were the hotel said the feedback would be dealt with and this has not happened.
