This was a spectacular property and perfect for my first trip to Scotland. The rooms are very comfortable, and the entire building and grounds are full of character and feel exactly like you hope they will. The pool and saunas were a treat, modern and very high end. The food at the hotel was excellent. A huge amount of praise go to Chris the bartender and Alan the concierge who went out of their way to make our stay a wonderful time. Both Chris and Alan took the time to talk with us each day, help us with tons of advice, and were just excellent guys. Alan went above and beyond in arranging a local factory to deliver wool and cashmere scarves / blankets to the hotel for us to choose from, and please make sure to ask Chris to make you a special drink just for you--it will be one of a kind and excellent! Looking forward to returning here in 2025.

We booked a weekend break with a view to staying an extra night however, we couldn’t escape quick enough. I tried to call the spa to book a spa day for my hubby and I and each time the phone range and cut off! So no spa could be booked. Let down number one! Upon arrival I checked in and was told the bill was £540?? £440 for the room and £50 per room per night “incidentals” on my card. Not a problem but why not say this instead of just expecting us to know. Let down number two! I mentioned about the spa, there was no apology and was asked if I wanted to book in there, nope that ship unfortunately had sailed. The room was spacious and comfortable enough with everything you needed, I would have expected a coffee pod machine for the price of the stay but instead a kettle and instant coffee it was, this need addressing, I understand they’re undergoing refurbishment which is fine, but let people know and price rooms accordingly. As the room looked tired with peeling wallpaper etc. The breakfast was a huge let down…. (We stayed 6 years previously and the breakfast was cooked to order!) it was on a par with a toby carvery breakfast! The station was tucked into a corner of the room so that if one person was helping themselves, nobody else could get in, leading to it being very awkward to navigate! The coffee was terrible. Not what you expect from a 5 start hotel! That was faux pas three at this point. After breakfast, We decided to check out to spa area. We walked down in our slippers and robes and was met by a young brunette girl and very rude blonde woman, who were deep in conversation about another member of staff. They didn’t stop their conversation for us but did for another woman arrived after us. After she had finished dealing with this lady she didn’t even look at us and just grunted sign in there. There was no direction as to where anything was. No warm smile or any sort of customer service! After making use of the pool and sauna we decided we’d like to sit in the jacuzzi outside…… we were just about to walk in and a young brunette girl said no you can’t go in there!!! I said I’m sorry? She said you aren’t allowed in there at 10.30am as they hold the area to “paying spa guests only” and if we wanted to go in we could after 6pm, This is where I decided to put her straight regarding the failed phone calls to book said spa and that they’d missed out on £324 for the two of us because they couldn’t be bothered to answer nor could they show us the time of day when we arrived at the reception! The attitude of both these women was unacceptable and disgusting!!! Definitely not the attitude to have when dealing with “paying” hotel guests. We weren’t staying a third night and upon check out I noticed 10% gratuities had been added to our bill! I’m not sure why, nobody served us at a table, we had to frequent the bar and carry them ourselves to our table! I couldn’t order room service from the bar this was an issue for some reason! It was a fa

Just returned from an overnight at the Mar hotel to celebrate my husbands 40th birthday, some lovely chocolates were leavt as a surprise for him ,refurbishment was going on which we weren't aware of , the hotel is very dated so it's very much needed , the is only one toilet available to use for the full of the restaurant/ bar guests. The room itself was very spacious, but very hot during the night , we didn't sleep well at all. The dinner was beautiful, the service wasn't great tho this wasn't acknowledged and complimentary drinks were given so that was nice , the staff were very friendly throughout the hotel. We used the spa facilities, the swimming pool / sauna and steam room were lovely, but the shower area in the ladies wasn't very clean at all and an awful smell , there was a strange smell throughout the hotel like a damp musky type smell . The views from hotel are lovely. Breakfast was just ok , I would say for a 5 star hotel this could be alot better especially given the fact the dinner was upto a very high standard. We had drinks in the bar on arrival, I unfortunately had to send my coffee back as there was a horrible taste to it , bar tender tasted it and he agreed. I would stay again but after the refurbishment

We booked a spa day & afternoon tea, on booking there was no details of timings, other than to arrive at 10am. On booking, there was no mention of the ongoing hotel refurbishment, which i think should have been advised. Refurbishment is badly needed, the carpets in the corridors are trip hazards, the paint work is all chipped and the place smells really damp, a few dehumidifiers were being used (guessing to mask the smells, but not really working) Staff at reception were pleasant enough, but it all felt a bit disorganised and we were asked to pay for the day, even though we had paid in full on booking. The changing rooms smelled of damp, it was cramped, not much room to get ready and the showers flooded the floor. The leisure facilities were ok, def not 5 star experience. The jacuzzi with 4 people in it, was super cramped and the heated beds didn’t work. Afternoon tea was fairly good, although staff left us waiting to get seated, lots of staff chatting in another room, they could see us but no one came out to seat us, it then took another 30 mins to be served and this meant rushing the food as the hotel had booked our treatments in for after the afternoon tea. During this tîme in the grand hall whilst still waiting on food (we were the only guests at this time, with around ten members of staff walking in and out) a manager from the hotel was having a heated discussion with the contractor, which seemed really unprofessional. The treatments were nice and def a highlight. Overall really underwhelmed with Mar Hall, it felt like customers were an inconvenience to staff and overall pretty grotty, just because the place is being refurbished, a lick of paint and cleaning should not be neglected. Do not recommend as I have now read reviews from July, were the hotel said the feedback would be dealt with and this has not happened.

Marr Hall is currently being refurbished which had an impact on our stay. Our room was on the ground floor but we had to take the lift down, walk along a labyrinth of corridors, go up a set of stairs to arrive at our room. The corridors we walked along had a disgusting smell of damp which was putrid in certain sections of the corridors. If we’d had rooms there I would have been complaining. Our rooms were old, dated but clean with comfortable beds. Windows had been opened in both of the rooms we had but in one room the windows would not close and needed 3 members of staff to try before they got it shut. The radiators in the corridor were on full which caused us to be so uncomfortably hot during the night. I have coeliac disease and was reassured I would be catered for. First breakfast we went in plenty of time but had to wait at least 15 minutes which meant the breakfast wasn’t being served for much longer. I had no cereal or toast offered and was told I should take some items from the buffet and a couple of items would be cooked in the kitchen. I noticed that guests were using the serving utensils between dishes which meant that there was a risk of cross contamination for me. I thought the chef should have known that and offered to cook my food in the kitchen. I asked if all my food could be cooked in the kitchen which was agreed. When it was brought out I was informed that the mushrooms were not available from the kitchen and the buffet mushrooms were all they had. Really? A large hotel had no mushrooms left in the kitchen? The second morning was better, I got mushrooms but no toast or cereal offered. The staff were lovely and helpful but I wouldn’t return until after the refurbishment had been done. Spa was good so that saved the relaxing weekend we wanted for celebrating my daughters upcoming wedding.

Excellent stay at the Mar Hall resort this summer. So beautiful and peaceful. On a gorgeous estate with lots of trees and greenery, little bunnies on the grass as you drive to the main entrance. Beautiful old manor house with large windows, high ceilings and peaceful views on the fields and water. Newly redone spa area with relaxation lounge. Beds were so comfortable that I consistently slept in and missed breakfast. Beautiful soaker tub with view of the gardens to relax with a good book. Also a close drive from many beautiful places like Loch Lomond where they have a little kiosk that serves Baileys hot chocolate with cream on a cold day, or the Galloway Forest Park with little country lanes through sheep fields and a deer park, which was well worth the trip. Delicious gastropub at the Clachan Inn to finish off the trip. Very helpful and friendly staff as well. A truly restorative holiday.

We had the pleasure of stopping at Mar Hall on our way back from a large family trip to Skye. The venue was as stunning as one would imagine but it paled in comparison to the service that we received while there. We had an eventful night, but throughout the staff were incredible. My mum was rushed to hospital during our stay but the staff - Ryan in particular - took excellent care of her and the rest of us while we waited for the ambulance. Before that, he had gone far beyond what could reasonably be expected to ensure that we all had the best possible dining experience. The food was delicious and served in a stunning room. Beyond the staff, the venue, spas and views are out of this world. We will be back.
