On our 45th wedding anniversary, my wife surprised me with a day out, staying at a boutique hotel. She chose the King’s Park Hotel in Retford. The idea was a ramble around Retford, followed by dinner in the hotel and a few drinks at the bar. When we left, she apologised to me for her choice—the reasons why follow. We booked the suite as it was the only option. 1. The suite had not been cleaned properly. There were bits and pieces on the living room carpet and bits of paper on the bathroom floor. The fridge contained a half-consumed bottle of Prosecco. 2. There was a facility to make tea or coffee, but no milk. 3. The toilet flush malfunctioned; you could only get it to flush by spinning the handle! 4. There was not even a bar of soap in the bathroom, let alone shampoo or shower gel. 5. The photos of lovely rooms on the website bore no resemblance to the suite in levels of décor or appeal. 6. A coat hanger was hanging from the curtain rail. 7. There were cushions on the floor behind chairs. 8. We could not locate the TV remote. The following day, we found it pushed behind a curtain. 9. We had loud music playing into the early hours. Then we found out that there was an event at the hotel that night. Consequently, there was no restaurant going to be open, the space being used for the event. There was no bar either! The full English Breakfast they boast about was unavailable the next day, and we ate off plastic chairs and tables, not the restaurant shown on the web. They posted none of this on the website, and we believe we have a clear-cut case of misrepresentation, which we shall take further. The staff were friendly but could do nothing as the managers were “away”. They arranged for two glasses of wine for us to take to the suite. It was a spoiled anniversary. We were only saved by finding a lovely Italian restaurant in the town. My view is that when we booked, they were full and they placed us in the suite, which is rarely used.
