If you are going to DC for a whole day, it is recommended to buy a one-day pass for $15.5 ($2 is the cost of the transportation card, which is non-refundable and is also a good souvenir for tourism), which allows you to take the bus unlimited times. The subway is $6.75 one-way, and $2 after 9 pm. The bus is $2. DC has a circulator for 1 US dollar, but if you don't have change or a transportation card, the driver will not let you put in coins.
