Lakes Lodge Okataina

The lake view room is very good, the sparsely populated water is very clear, suitable for emptying. When it rains, the lake is dark, and the sky is blue without filters when the sun is out.

Wayne & Ingrid - Lodge Owners are hands on and incredibly attentive. The Lodge is clean and comfortable. The towels are super plush and the bathroom amenities are Molton Brown. Food is 5 Star! Chef’s are outstanding. We went trout fishing with Bob - we caught 15 pounds of trout. Bob was funny, informative and probably the best fisherman in Rotarura. The boat is big, comfortable and has excellent fishing equipment and technology. Our preplanned cycling tour got canceled. Wayne stepped up and found us an alternative and I must say it was the highlight of our trip so far in NZ. The bikes were top notch and the mountain bike trails were incredible with all levels accommodated for.

We had our dinner at the in-house restaurant (The Grill). It was fully booked and was really busy. There was only 1 lady looking after the bar and the restaurant. Despite being busy, she delivered an exceptional service to us and even to the other customers. We will definitely come back for the service, though the hotel needs some TLC.

Stayed for a weekend in a 3brm unit. Spacious and was like a little home away from home with everything you could want. Parking space right outside the door. We liked the location away from the main city centre and easy to get to. Beds in rooms 2 & 3 were a bit hard for our taste, and the single beds needed some attention with just the slightest movement setting off a cacophony of noise so my teen struggled to sleep well. Somewhat comically, the toilet seat in the bottom floor was shaped in a manner that effectively cut off the circulation to your legs and could only spend a couple of minutes seated before pins and needles set in down your legs. Have never experienced this before in our years of travelling around the world and in NZ. Needless to say, the bathroom was never occupied for long during our stay. Unfortunately couldn't enjoy the outdoor deck area as the mozzies were swarming in clouds. Tips - the staircase to the upper level is very steep. Pack insect repellant. Book in to the onsite restaurant early to avoid missing out like we did.

What do you say about this hotel... The city and the hot springs are far away, which is equivalent to the downtown side of the lake. This hotel is on the other side of the lake. It is half a circle around the lake. Strictly speaking, it can't be counted as a hotel. The waterside terrace house, a small boss took a few suites and put it on the Internet. There is no front desk. I went directly to the boss's room to get the keys. No matter what, the room is good, the living room and kitchen downstairs, and 2 bedrooms upstairs, clean and tidy, basic accommodation needs can be met. The boss is a woman, very enthusiastic, has always told his son to take this to take that, the son is also very obedient, has been helping. The boss kept introducing the facilities and introducing the locals. At the time of check-out, when the luggage was moved to the car, the boss opened a chat with other tenants or friends at the door, handed the key directly to her, and left.
