Fleur de Lys

San Jose|0.59km from Chinatown
I brought my family to the Fluer di Lys some 18 years after my first visit to San Jose. Then, I was traveling solo and had not a care for travel plans or schedules. It was a wonderful journey that changed my life. This trip would be different. Traveling as s family, I wanted to expose my teenage sons and wife to the beauty of Costa Rica but understood that there would need to be some planning to get experience I happened upon two decades before. Andres, at the Fluer di Lys was a great help with assisting me arrange everything from airport pick up to destination options while in country. We traveled back and forth across the country, using the hotel as our central hub and regrouping point. The hotel serves a daily Costa Rican breakfast (free) and is located close to good restaurants, museums and parks. All within a few minutes walk. Lavanka, the afternoon front desk clerk, was really helpful when we we’re choosing places to eat. As we walked around the area we would note the eateries and ask her about them. She gave honest opinions, steering us away from a couple of places and towards others. As for family sit down dining, expect to pay around 20-25 dollars per plate. There are cheaper options too. They’re usually walk up counters or small bodega style store fronts that offers a quick meal for about half the sit down restaurant. Keep in mind, there is a large tax added to meals (23%) and a fixed gratuity (10%). I’d also recommend exchanging currency in the airport. The hotel does have some cash and offers a fair exchange but for larger amounts (100US or more) they might not have it. Also, taxis are cash only. Have Colonies ready so you can discuss and pay for the trip upfront. The only low I’d say is the hotel had a wonderful restaurant and separate bar the first time I was there. This time they were closed for remodeling but should be open by fall of ‘23. I hope this review helps you make your decision on where to stay while in San Jose. Enjoy your trip!

Hotel Cultura Plaza

San Jose|0.71km from Chinatown
Dear Valued Guests, I hope this message finds you well. I am writing to share my recent experience at Hotel Cultura Plaza in San Jose, Costa Rica, and to caution those considering a reservation at this establishment. During my stay at the hotel, I encountered a significant issue with the room I was assigned. Unfortunately, some of the rooms at this hotel do not have windows and resemble prison cells rather than comfortable accommodations. Understandably, I refused to accept such a room and immediately contacted Booking.com to seek a resolution. To my disappointment, the hotel displayed a lack of cooperation, even after three hours of mediation with Booking.com. Despite our best efforts, the hotel refused to address the issue adequately, leading to the cancellation of my reservation. Furthermore, the hotel has also declined to refund the payment I made for the booking. Throughout this process, their responses were consistently rude and unhelpful, leaving me frustrated and dissatisfied. In addition to the room issue, I feel it is important to mention that the dining room for breakfast at Hotel Cultura Plaza is extremely small, akin to a small bar with only about four tables. This limited space may make it challenging to find a seat during busy periods, and it can detract from the overall dining experience. Given my disappointing experience and the hotel's uncooperative attitude, I want to urge prospective customers to exercise caution when considering a reservation at Hotel Cultura Plaza. Please be aware of the lack of windows in some rooms, the prison cell-like appearance, and the limited dining space for breakfast. It is my hope that by sharing this message, I can help others make informed decisions and avoid potential frustrations. As consumers, we should be able to expect a certain level of quality and service when choosing accommodations, and unfortunately, Hotel Cultura Plaza fell short of these expectations. Thank you for your attention, and I wish you all pleasant and trouble-free experiences in your future travels. Sincerely,

Gran Hotel Costa Rica, Curio Collection by Hilton

Great location in the heart of San Jose, within walking distance from all the city’s attractions. As a Hilton member, we were recognised with a great upgrade to a nice and modern room. The daily breakfast was sumptuous with local and western options. The evening happy hour was incredible and the best selection of drinks we’ve ever been to. Would also like to thank several staff who helped us during our stay - Anthony the bellhop, and Carlos + Marcela, severs at the hotel’s restaurant. One suggestion is for the reception counter staff to be more friendly and approachable. The perception we got was they were cold and rushed.

Like every Selina Hostel there is love in every detail - decoration, lights, good furniture. We had the deluxe room with a lot of space, a table, a sofa, own bathroom and good comfort. The bed was very cosy. We had no warm water for 2 days in our room, but the staff reacted instantly, tried to fix it and we got a free breakfast and some money back. Clean kitchen, enogh fridge space and a cool sofa space in the living kitchen. In total we had a nice and relaxing stay amd would definitly recommand this hostel.
Hotel Balmoral

Hotel Balmoral charges you in full on your first day and will not allow for any subsequent changes. I reserved for 10 days and was told by management that they would only issue a voucher credit to be used within the next 30 days. This policy should be stated upfront so people making reservations know all terms. Tourism business is down and they appear desperate for business but their policies prevent you from ever returning again. This establishment appears only willing to provide discounts and incentives solely to the hispanic community.
