It's a very remote restaurant, and it feels like only regular customers will come. The banquet dishes for dinner and breakfast are delicious; the outdoor hot spring bath is a mixed bath... I saw a brown bear not long after leaving the hotel in the morning 🐻I am.

This old traditional inn inside Shiretoko National Park received a split verdict from my wife and I. I enjoyed the remote location at the end of a backroad, part way up a hillside where a trailhead begins for a popular mountain walk. It’s also a good location for access to the park’s visitor center and the popular 5 lakes area. There are 3 small public outdoor onsen baths located very near by. We both enjoyed the hotel’s indoor public baths. The night we stayed there were only two other rooms occupied. Our room was a Japanese - Western Twin, meaning it had a traditional tatami mat room, but also a separate sleeping area with western beds plus a small wet room bathroom. My wife felt the food was not that good, perhaps it suffered by comparison to some really good food we had at other lodgings. Also, during the ensuing days she discovered when speaking to locals that the hotel owner is not highly regarded. It’s felt he does not invest enough in his properties. A year ago there was a tourist boat accident and some people died, the accident blamed the owner for failures in several areas. As it turns out, the same gent owns Chinohate and the locals fear he’s operating it on the cheap too. Between the average food, relatively high rates, and remote and under-occupied vibe, my wife was not keen. I found the staff welcoming, the food okay, and the remote surroundings attractive. It appears to be a place where hikers might stay before/after their climb, but it would seem they need to be hikers with a healthy budget.

Air conditioning is centrally controlled, and even if you wanted to use air conditioning, there was only heating. Also, the open-air bath was too hot to add water, so I could hardly enter. In addition, although it may be depending on the room grade, I would have liked for the toilet in each room to be equipped with a washlet regardless of the grade. Also, it's a pity that there was no smoking area outside the building before, and it was only a smoking room.

The main event of our 60th birthday family trip was to stay overnight at a hotel in the brown bear habitat and enjoy grilled bear meat. Due to the abnormal weather, it was hot even at night and I felt uncomfortable sleeping, but the meal was the Shiretoko Gozen course and it was delicious! The open-air bath felt like nothing was wrong, and the staff were very nice, so it was a great hotel. I couldn't meet any wild animals, but it was a good memory. The hotel is owned by the most talked about villainous president. The staff at the site could not help feeling upset, but they treated me with professional customer service. The president is a villain, but the hotel and staff were the best. I'm glad I went.

I think the location is good. Isn't this a hotel run by Seiichi Katsurada, the president of Shiretoko Cruise Ships? Is it morally okay to advertise here?

I used the hot springs on a Saturday afternoon. The parking lot was almost full with mountain climbing cars, but the hot springs were reserved for private use. In the men's bath, there were sea pants in the changing room, and I put them on and entered the open-air bath. It was a little hot, but I was able to relax in nature. The rocks are slippery so be careful where you step.

Visited during a 4 day holiday. There are a lot of people parking on the road (including those who don't use the inn), probably because there are a lot of people climbing Mt. Rausu, so I proceeded with caution. I didn't think the food was as good as I expected...but I guess I have to consider the advantage of being able to have meals served in this location (;'∀') You need to change into bathing clothes to enter the open-air bath. However, it is very a**ospheric, so I think it would be a waste not to go if you come this far.
