I can't rate the hotel as I didn't stay there and don't want to comment unfairly for that reason. But today my husband and I took our first walk along the beach at Taormina and saw what looked like a decent enough beach bar (as opposed to a luxe beach bar). We stopped and asked a guy behind the bar for a couple of limoncello spritzs and he seemed unsure and went away for a few seconds to ask another young guy (tall and shaven-haired/bald, seemed to be in charge) if it was possible. There were plenty of seats available but we got told where to sit (at the back, near the bar, clearly not the "best" seats) and our drinks arrived. So far, so good. We'd noted the bar menu and seen our drinks were 12 euros each, but when we asked for our bill the same chap went to the side of the bar and scribbled a bill for the 2 drinks plus 6 euros cover charge. It wasn't a printed, itemised bill either. We paid it and left, but both felt we'd been scammed. Now, it may well be that non-guests are made to pay a cover charge, but it wasn't something we noticed on the drinks menu or on any signs around bar. We did wonder whether non-guests aren't really allowed to use the bar and this was perhaps a staff side-hustle to pocket extra euros from unwitting tourists. It maybe entirely legitimate, we don't know...but just pointing it out to others in case they, like us would rather avoid a sizeable cover charge for what were, in fact, 2 below average lemon spritzs' and didn't even get offered a choice of seats. By the way, we'd also visited the very up-market Almare Mazzaro Sea Palace in the adjacent bay and paid not much more for the same drinks and in a wonderful, luxurious setting with staff who treated us extremely well....and guess what, no dubious "mandatory" cover charge. Know where we'll be going next time (where tipping staff for faultless customer service is an actual pleasure).
