Anonymous UserWonderful staff and useful airport transfers, but the hotel needs a complete renovation
The strongest part of our stay was definitely the staff. Everyone was incredibly kind, welcoming and genuinely willing to help with absolutely everything. Their attitude made a huge difference, and we are very grateful to the entire team!
The hotel also provides complimentary airport pick-up and drop-off, which was extremely convenient. We received a room upgrade, and the staff brought drinking water and fresh linen to the room. Coffee and tea supplies were replenished every day as well.
Unfortunately, the building and rooms are extremely outdated, and cleanliness was a serious problem. The hotel clearly needs deep cleaning, better maintenance and a major renovation. Despite the excellent service and useful amenities, the poor condition of the property made the stay much less comfortable.
Thank you again to the wonderful staff — you were truly the best part of this hotel.

Guest UserThe Empire Brunei truly exceeded my expectations, highly recommended! The breakfast buffet offered an incredible variety of both Chinese and Western dishes, all made with fresh, delicious ingredients – every meal was incredibly satisfying. The room was spacious and elegantly decorated, clean, and comfortably laid out, making for a truly relaxing stay. The hotel grounds are huge, with lush greenery and stunning ocean views. It's a quiet and therapeutic environment. The outdoor pool has crystal clear water and faces the sea directly, perfect for swimming and photos. Just a few steps away is the beach, ideal for leisurely walks and watching the sunset. My entire stay was flawless, with thoughtful service and excellent facilities. You absolutely must stay here if you visit Brunei!

Guest UserI used this hotel for a transit stay. Upon arrival, the hotel's shuttle staff was immediately available, making the transfer to the hotel smooth and convenient. The location is great, with many attractions within walking distance, and there's a night market nearby, which is a big plus. The bathroom was also clean, which was nice. For breakfast, there weren't many options, but there was toast, jam, and drinks, which was perfectly fine for my child's breakfast. Just note that toothbrushes are not provided in the room, so you'll need to bring your own.

Anonymous UserGood location for budget travelers, but cleanliness and facilities need improvement
Location & Accessibility.
The hostel is located near the Gadong Night Market in a relatively safe area. It takes about 15 minutes by car or bus to reach the city center, where you can find the Sultan Omar Ali Saifuddien Mosque, Kampong Ayer (water village), and museums. Public buses to the city center are available right from Gadong Night Market.
Room & Cleanliness:
I booked a bed in the female dormitory and was guided to another building about a 1-minute walk from the main Google Maps location, which was fine. However, I had concerns about the cleanliness. The bedsheets, although supposed to be fresh, had visible hair and dust on them. I was offered a different bed, but it had the same issue. Since I was exhausted from long-distance travel, I gave up and accepted it, but I felt uncomfortable watching the staff simply brush off the dirt by hand and assign the previous bed to another guest.
Facilities & Wi-Fi:
There is room for improvement regarding the bathroom and Wi-Fi. The shower rooms (separate from the toilets) are extremely small, with no hooks to hang towels or clothes. There is also a mild sewer smell from the toilet and shower area. The hostel uses a strong orange air freshener throughout the property, which felt a bit overpowering.
While Wi-Fi is provided, the connection was extremely slow—perhaps because my room was at the far end of the hallway. Since eSIMs in Brunei are relatively expensive compared to other countries, the weak Wi-Fi was quite inconvenient.
Overall:
It has the absolute basics. If you are on a tight budget and just need a cheap place to sleep for 1 or 2 nights in price-heavy Brunei, this could be an option. However, expectations for cleanliness and comfort should be kept low.

Good location, in the city center, three minutes walk to Sultan Omar Ali Saifuddin Mosque, three minutes walk to Sultan Memorial Hall, two minutes walk to Water Village Pier, less than one minute walk to Brunei Royal Plaza, two minutes walk to the shopping center, there is a large supermarket in the basement of the shopping center, all kinds of goods are very complete. There are many restaurants in the shopping center, which is convenient for eating. I checked out of the original hotel before 12 noon because of the flight at 2 am the next day, and temporarily booked a small single room to rest and take a shower before going to the airport. The price is relatively cheap, the main disadvantage is that there is only one bathroom for all the rooms in the youth hostel, and the toilet and shower are all in it. If there are many guests, there will definitely be problems and it will take a long time to wait.

Guest UserThe hotel is located quite far from the city center, but it does provide a free shuttle service to and from the airport. It is also not very close to the sea; however, this is not a major issue since swimming is prohibited at the nearby beaches anyway. Additionally, there are no cafes or shops within walking distance of the hotel, which makes the location even less convenient. The prices at the hotel’s cafe are overpriced.
The hotel’s design feels somewhat outdated, but nothing critical. What was truly disappointing, however, was the service. The hotel presents itself as a 4-star property, yet it is surprisingly strict about a very basic necessity — drinking water. Guests are provided with only one bottle of water per person per day.
There is coffee and tea available in the room, but to boil the kettle you need additional drinking water, which the staff refused to provide. They insisted that water had already been supplied during housekeeping and that no more was allowed. We had to keep asking for it as if they were personally paying for it themselves. That was extremely unpleasant.
The tap water is yellow, and there were also issues with the hot water.
Only one person works at the reception desk, which is clearly insufficient for a hotel with this many rooms, resulting in long waiting times. The reception staff are not knowledgeable about nearby attractions and do not assist with arranging tours, suggesting that guests find everything out on their own.
Unfortunately, the overall service was extremely disappointing.

We stayed at Embun in Brunei and it was an exceptional experience from start to finish. The property is beautifully maintained, blending modern comfort with tasteful local touches — spotless rooms, comfortable beds, and thoughtful amenities that made our stay effortless. The location is peaceful yet conveniently close to key attractions, and the sea views and surrounding trees were perfect for relaxing after a day of sightseeing.
What truly set Embun apart were the hosts, Diana and Jimi. Warm, attentive, and genuinely welcoming, they went above and beyond to ensure we had everything we needed. Diana anticipated our preferences, arranged excellent local recommendations, and made check‑in seamless with a friendly, professional manner. Jimi’s local knowledge was invaluable — from arranging transport to sharing insights about hidden gems around Brunei. Both were always available without ever being intrusive, striking the perfect balance between professionalism and sincere hospitality.
The food recommendations and small personal touches (welcome refreshments, spotlessly clean bathrooms, and prompt responses to requests) made us feel well cared for throughout our stay. If you’re visiting Brunei and want a comfortable, restful base with hosts who make you feel like a valued guest, Embun with Diana and Jimi is highly recommended. We’ll happily return.

くろねこしろねこ《全力で楽しむ海外旅行》When we arrived, the hotel offered a free shuttle service to the night market if we booked through them, which was super helpful! On the way back, they even took us to two mosques so we could get some great photos of the illuminations ✨ It was truly amazing service, I was so impressed! 🤩
Regarding breakfast... I wanted to try some local food, so I didn't book breakfast. When I asked the hotel staff for recommendations, they happily gave me a ton of suggestions for breakfast spots (and even wrote them down for me!)

nooopyThe location was great. There's a decent-sized supermarket in the hotel's basement, which was super convenient since it's open late.
They upgraded our room, so we ended up with a really spacious one.
The hotel itself is a bit old and could use some cleaning in places, but for the price, it's not bad.
Breakfast wasn't amazing taste-wise, but it was colorful and looked nice.
