Aksu is tough but worth it, not highly recommended for March
Aksu March Travel Guide|Spring in Southern Xinjiang smells like apricot blossoms! 🌸
Location
Aksu is located on the southern foothills of the Tianshan Mountains, on the edge of the Tarim Basin, known as the "White Water City" of Southern Xinjiang. March is still off-peak season here, with fewer tourists and beautiful scenery. The snow on the mountains hasn't fully melted yet, but the apricot blossoms have quietly started blooming, making it a low-key and meaningful hidden gem! 🏔️
🚫 Pitfall Avoidance Guide
Weather Assassin: In March, Aksu’s day-to-night temperature difference can be as much as 20 degrees! A light jacket during the day, a down jacket at night to survive. Also, sandstorms can come suddenly, so sunglasses, hats, masks, and sunscreen are all must-haves! 😷
Transportation Pitfall: Attractions are very far apart! Often one to two hours by car. If you don’t drive yourself, book a private car in advance on Trip.com. Don’t trust those “cheap shortcuts” offered by unofficial guides at scenic spots.
Photo Taboo: No photography allowed inside the Kizil Thousand Buddha Caves 📵! Respect the cultural relics and avoid being asked to leave by staff. It’s best to ask permission before taking photos at places like mosques.
Food Caution: Be wary of overly bright-colored, long-sitting grilled meats at night markets. Find local spots where locals queue up, you won’t go wrong.
🍖 Food Recommendations (Drool Alert!)
Kuqa Big Nang: Bigger than a basin! Crispy edges fresh out of the oven, soft in the middle, paired with freshly grilled lamb skewers, absolutely delicious!
Yiganqi Pilaf: The rice is shiny and oily, lamb stewed until tender, carrots sweet— I polished off three bowls!
Grilled Buns: Thin-skinned buns burst with juice in one bite, thick-skinned grilled buns are crispy outside and tender inside. Two for breakfast, full of energy!
Aksu Apples: A must-try! Real rock sugar heart apples, crisp, sweet, and juicy. You might still catch the tail end of the season in March. Look for them in supermarkets or markets.
Warehouse No.3 / Old Tur Roast Meat King: Popular local restaurants, lamb chops and grilled pigeon are must-orders. The environment is also very distinctive and great for photos.
🏨 Accommodation Guide
It’s recommended to stay in downtown Aksu for convenience in dining and transportation. I usually book in advance on Trip.com, filtering for “city center” or near “Jinlan Square / Century Square.”
Budget-friendly: Check out Lantai Hotel or GreenTree Eastern Hotel, both highly rated and well-located, around 200 RMB per night.
Design-focused: SFEEL Designer Hotel offers smart room controls and audio-visual rooms, perfect for young travelers.
Experience local culture: To experience Kucha culture, search for Kucha-themed homestays in Kuqa City, but March might be quiet, so confirm if they are open in advance.
🗺️ 3-Day Itinerary
Day 1: Canyon Awe
Depart from the city in the morning to Wensu Grand Canyon (also called Tomur Grand Canyon). The red cliffs are spectacular, and the wooden plank path in Valley No.4 is especially photogenic. In the afternoon, visit the Tianshan Sacred Tree Park to see ancient trees—don’t forget mosquito repellent! Return to the city at night to explore Wang San Street Night Market and start your foodie adventure.
Day 2: Through the Millennia
Hire a car to Kizil Thousand Buddha Caves, remember to book a guide in advance or you won’t understand the murals. In the afternoon, visit Kuqa Palace; if lucky, you might see the last Chinese princess in person! Then stroll around Kuqa Grand Mosque and Hesitan Old Street, the colorful doors and windows are perfect for photos.
Day 3: Leisurely Wrap-up
In the morning, visit the Aksu Regional Museum for a quick understanding of Kucha culture. In the afternoon, take a walk at Duolang River Scenic Area or bike along the Keke Yalin forest belt to feel the green charm of this oasis in the desert. At night, buy some local specialties (walnuts, red dates) and prepare for departure.
📸 Photo Hotspots
Wensu Grand Canyon: Red rock walls + blue sky, wear white or bright clothes, every shot looks like a Western blockbuster!
Kuqa Hesitan Old Street: Uyghur-style old street, every door and window is a different color, the color clashes are amazing!
Tianshan Tomur Scenic Area · Ta Village: A small village at the foot of the snow mountains, with grasslands and wooden houses. On a good day, you can capture the snow mountain backdrop, very healing.
Shaya Poplar Forest: Although autumn is the golden season, the poplar forest in March has a strong, vigorous line beauty, and the sunset is stunning too.
😩 A Tough Experience
After hiking all day in the canyon, I came back to the hotel and could pour out half a pound of sand from my shoes, and my hair was so tangled I doubted my life. The wind and sand of Southern Xinjiang really taught me a lesson!
💭 Personal Thoughts
What fascinated me most about this trip to Aksu wasn’t any specific attraction, but the contradictory yet harmonious feeling. Backed by snow mountains, facing the desert, yet hiding such a gentle oasis in between. The streets don’t have many tourists, mostly elders carrying nang bread home, and time seems to slow down here.
The food is truly generous and authentic—one bite of nang, one bite of meat, filling both stomach and heart. The distances between attractions are long, and sitting in the car all day numbs your butt, but the moment you see the scenery, it all feels worth it!
