Prices will go up if you don't go now in September, so hurry while there are fewer crowds!
As summer vacation draws to a close, airfares and hotel prices plummet. September, sandwiched between summer vacation and National Day, offers mild weather, and tourist attractions see fewer student groups and families. I've selected eight places, all at peak times when "prices will go up if you go later, and it'll be packed if you go earlier." Take advantage of the lower crowds and plan your trip quickly.
01 Wuhan | Hubei
September in Wuhan finally offers a respite from the sweltering heat. The river breeze in the mornings and evenings is much more comfortable than in the height of summer. East Lake Greenway is a place I always cycle through. ⏰ Between 6:30 and 8:00 AM, the lake is foggy, and the cycling path is almost deserted. Rent a shared bike and enter from Liyuan Square, cycling towards Moshan. The entire route is flat, suitable for both the elderly and children.
I recommend entering Yellow Crane Tower Park after 4:00 PM. The light shining obliquely on the tower is much better, and the view of the Yangtze River Bridge from the top is much more pleasant than under the midday sun.
⚠️ Tickets need to be booked in advance through official channels. On-site tickets are not guaranteed; please refer to the announcement on the day for details.
Songyang Temple, located in Huangpi, was surprisingly quiet. With its ancient trees and grand entrance, it's perfect for those seeking tranquility. The Mulan Cultural and Ecological Tourism Area is quite large; don't try to visit too many places in one day—one or two is enough.
🍜 For food, get up early and head to Liangdao Street for a bowl of hot dry noodles with egg wine; it's a better option than what you'd find in the scenic area. Choose accommodation along Metro Line 2; it's convenient for visiting East Lake and Yellow Crane Tower.
02 Ningbo|Zhejiang
I recommend spending a morning leisurely exploring the Tianyi Pavilion and Yuehu area.
⏰ Arrive at Tianyi Pavilion before 9 am. Before the crowds arrive, the light filters through the old camphor trees onto the bluestone slabs, creating a peaceful atmosphere where you can hear the sound of turning pages. Yuehu Lake is right next door; a walk around it takes about 40 minutes and is free—perfect for a leisurely stroll.
Xikou Tengtou Tourist Area is more suitable for families with children, featuring an ecological farm and folk performances; kids can easily spend half a day there. Qiantong Ancient Town is one of my personal favorites; it's much quieter than Wuzhen, with cobblestone streets and old courtyards. 📌 The small shop in the ancient town selling Qiantong's three treasures—dried tofu and hollow tofu—is worth trying.
⚠️ Some old houses in the ancient town close at 5 PM, so don't wait until evening to enter.
For accommodation in Ningbo city, choose near Gulou or Tianyi Square for convenient evening shopping and dining. There are direct buses to Xikou. September is the peak season for seafood; 🍜 find a local restaurant and order a plate of pickled crab with yellow wine—it's more authentic than trendy restaurants.
03 Zhuhai | Guangdong
September in Zhuhai is still hot, but the sea breeze makes it less unbearable. Chimelong International Ocean Resort is the highlight; I suggest avoiding weekends, as weekdays are half the crowd.
⏰ Head straight to the whale shark aquarium as soon as the park opens in the morning; that's when it's least crowded, and you don't have to wait for the crowds to disperse before taking photos.
Lovers' Road is best visited in the evening. Rent a tandem bicycle and ride from Gongbei to Xianglu Bay. The sea turns orange at sunset. 📌 The boardwalk next to the Fisher Girl statue offers the best view.
⚠️ The UV rays at the beach are still strong in September, so don't skimp on sunscreen.
I chose accommodation near the Hengqin Port for easy access to Chimelong, and I could even cross the border to Macau in the evening. Hotels in Chimelong are expensive but convenient if you're traveling with children; if you're on a budget, stay in the city center, a half-hour taxi ride away.
🍜 For seafood, go to Wanzai Seafood Street. Pick your own seafood and have it cooked at a restaurant; it's more cost-effective than restaurants in the park.
04 Aksu|Xinjiang
The Tianshan Mysterious Grand Canyon is the wildest destination on my list. September is the most comfortable month in southern Xinjiang, with daytime temperatures in the twenties (Celsius), making hiking through the canyon much easier. The light changes rapidly in the canyon. ⏰ Between noon and 2 PM, the sunlight shines directly into the valley floor, making the reddish-brown rock walls look like they're on fire—perfect for taking photos.
📌 The canyon is about five kilometers long, and hiking the entire route round trip takes three to four hours. Wear non-slip shoes, as the valley floor has loose rocks and puddles.
⚠️ Signal is weak inside, so don't go alone; follow the signs. If you're with elderly people or children, you can turn back halfway through, as you've seen most of the best scenery in the first half.
Accommodation in Aksu city is better than expected; choosing a location in the city center makes dining convenient.
🍜 Local apples and walnuts are in season in September; buy some from roadside stalls to try. For the canyon, I recommend hiring a car or joining a day tour, as public transportation is not very convenient.
05 Nanchong|Sichuan
Langzhong Ancient City is, in my opinion, an underrated city. In September, there aren't many tourists, and you can still find quiet old courtyards in the ancient city.
⏰ Climb Zhongtian Tower after 6 PM to see the entire expanse of green-tiled rooftops bathed in the golden light of the setting sun – a much more interesting experience than exploring during the day.
📌 The core area of the ancient city isn't large; you can walk around it all. Zhang Fei Temple, the Imperial Examination Hall, and Huaguang Tower are all nearby.
⚠️ Some guesthouses in the ancient city advertise "river view rooms," but their windows actually face a wall. Make sure to check the room layout carefully before booking.
For accommodation, choose a courtyard guesthouse within the ancient city. After the tourists have left in the evening, sit in the courtyard and drink tea – a more charming experience than staying in the newer parts of the city.
🍜 Baoning vinegar and steamed buns with white sugar are local specialties. Have a bowl of beef noodles for breakfast – the chili oil is fragrant but not spicy. Suitable for bringing parents; the pace is slow, and walking isn't tiring.
06 Huangshan|Anhui
In September, the summer heat has subsided in Huangshan, and the probability of seeing a sea of clouds is actually higher than in summer. I recommend choosing between Xidi and Hongcun. Hongcun has a more complete water system, and the reflections in Moon Pond and South Lake offer classic photo spots. ⏰ Arrive at South Lake before 7 AM for the clearest reflections when there's no wind. Xidi is less crowded and the alleys are quieter.
Chengkan Ancient Village is less conspicuous than the previous two. Its Bagua (Eight Trigrams) layout can be a bit confusing, but follow the signs at the village entrance to avoid getting lost. The Ancient Huizhou Cultural Tourism Area is large; choose one or two spots to see, don't try to see too many.
⚠️ Tickets and cable car tickets for Huangshan Scenic Area must be booked in advance. Buying tickets on-site during peak season can be difficult; refer to official announcements for details.
Choose accommodation in Hongcun or Tangkou Town for convenient access to the mountain the next day.
🍜 For Huizhou stinky mandarin fish and hairy tofu, find restaurants frequented by locals; the taste won't be bad. The temperature difference between day and night on the mountain is significant in September, so bring a jacket.
07 Xilin Gol | Inner Mongolia
In September, the grass on the Ulagai Grassland begins to turn yellow, creating a beautiful, desolate landscape. There are fewer tourists at this time, and accommodation prices are significantly lower than in July and August.
⏰ From 4 PM to sunset, the light on the grassland is at its softest, and herds of cattle and sheep migrate back home; every snapshot looks like a painting.
📌 The attractions on the grassland are far apart, so it's recommended to drive or hire a car. Download offline maps for your navigation system beforehand.
⚠️ In late September, nighttime temperatures can drop to single digits, so don't hesitate to wear a down jacket. Before embarking on horseback riding, inquire about the price and duration.
Choose a guesthouse or yurt in the Ulagai Management Area for stargazing at night.
🍜 Hand-pulled mutton and milk tea are standard fare; eating at a herder's home is more authentic than at restaurants in the tourist areas. Suitable for those who want to relax; the signal is intermittent, which adds to the tranquility.
08 Tangshan | Hebei
The Eastern Qing Tombs were surprisingly quiet. Visiting in September, the ancient pines lining the Sacred Way provided ample shade, making it cool and refreshing inside.
⏰ Between 9 and 11 am, the light filtering through the pine branches creates a particularly layered effect when photographing the stone statues. 📌 The tomb area is vast; it's recommended to take the sightseeing bus, as walking all day will leave your legs exhausted.
The Nanhu-Kailuan area is best visited in the afternoon. Nanhu Park is free, the lake is expansive, and locals stroll there in the evening. Kailuan National Mining Park offers insights into industrial history. ⚠️ Closed on Mondays, so don't make a wasted trip; check official announcements for opening hours.
Choose accommodation in the city center for convenient access in both directions.
🍜 Tangshan sesame candy and chess-piece-shaped sesame cakes make good souvenirs. For breakfast, try a bowl of Korean noodles, a local favorite since childhood. Suitable for bringing elders; the pace is slow, and the entrance fee is reasonable.
September is the most comfortable month, with fewer crowds, lower prices, and favorable weather. Of these eight places, Wuhan and Huangshan are suitable for first-time off-peak travelers, while Ulagai and the Tianshan Mysterious Grand Canyon are for those who want to travel further. Which one do you plan to visit first?
