#skitrip I’m giving this three stars only to warn people about the weather. When it’s 'bluebird,' Alyeska is the most beautiful place on Earth. However, we had four days of 'socked in' conditions where visibility was near zero. The 'flat light' in Alaska is no joke—you can’t tell a 5-foot drop from a flat transition. If you’re planning a trip here, stay for at least a week to increase your chances of a clear day. When the clouds did break on our final afternoon, we saw the 'hanging glaciers' and the Chugach range in all its glory, and it made the previous days of Braille-skiing totally worth it. Just come prepared with high-contrast lenses!

I spent two days riding the lifts to warm up my legs on the 'High Traverse' and 'Max’s,' and then hooked up with Chugach Powder Guides (located right at the resort) for a day of heli-skiing. Even within the resort boundaries, if you’re willing to hike 'The Headwall,' you can find fresh tracks days after a storm. #skitrip There is something hauntingly beautiful about skiing at Alyeska at night. We went in January when the sun sets around 4:00 PM, and the mountain transforms. They light up 2,000 vertical feet, which is one of the biggest lit verticals in the world. Gliding down 'Silvertip' under the glow of the massive stadium lights with the blackness of the Alaskan wilderness all around you is an experience you can’t get in the lower 48. If you’re lucky, you might even see a faint glow of the Northern Lights above the peaks. It’s cold, yes, but the sheer atmosphere makes it a mandatory part of any Alyeska itinerary.
