The mountain resembles a white pyramid, covered with snow year-round. At its foot lies a pristine sacred lake with glaciers flowing directly into it, offering breathtaking and untouched scenery. It is known as the hidden gem of eastern Tibet. ✅ Namtso Holy Elephant Gate: Situated on the northern shore of Namtso Lake in Bangor County, Nagqu, at over 4,700 meters elevation. A natural giant rock formation looks like a huge elephant bending down to drink water, with an arch formed between its trunk and body. Legend says it is the sacred wedding gate of Nyenchen Tanglha and the Namtso goddess. The lake and mountains reflect each other, creating a magnificent and sacred view. ✅ Biru Skull Wall: Located at Damu Monastery in Biru County, Nagqu, Tibet, this wall is built from over 200 human skulls from sky burials and is over 200 years old. It is a unique funerary cultural relic in the Tibetan region. ⚠️【Travel Tips】 ✅ Prevent altitude sickness: When you first arrive in Lhasa, avoid bathing and alcohol, and eat plenty of fruits and vegetables; Sapu is at 4,700 meters, so avoid running or jumping and prepare oxygen bottles. ✅ Documents: There are many checkpoints along the way, so always carry your ID card. ✅ Items: The UV rays on the plateau are very strong, so take physical sun protection measures. It’s recommended to keep food and water in the car. ✅ Other reminders: Do not touch the Skull Wall at the Damu sky burial site; supply points are scarce along the route, so bring self-heating meals and chocolate. Respect local customs, and do not casually touch mani stones or prayer flags. ✅ Private car: You can travel independently by private car for a deep and free experience, unlike rushed shopping tours. This is the preferred way for young travelers nowadays. 👭 About Us: 👌 We have our own travel agency and sign official travel contracts. 👌 Pure sightseeing with no shopping, flexible timing. 👌 Our team has professional guides, multiple vehicle options, and drone filming. 🔥 After this trip, you will discover that the beauty of eastern Tibet goes beyond Sapu. The Qinghai-Tibet Plateau boasts countless snow-capped mountains, many of which are revered by the world. While many can readily name the renowned sacred mountains, there is a place in Nagqu, northern Tibet, unknown even to many generations of people who have lived on this plateau for generations. Nagqu, located in northern Tibet on the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau, nestled between the Tanggula, Nyainqêntanglha, and Gangdise mountain ranges, is a landscape of interconnected mountains and numerous lakes. It is known as the land of caterpillar fungus, the source of rivers, and the soul of the grasslands. First-time visitors to Nagqu are invariably captivated by the endless grasslands, a verdant tapestry spread across the 4,500-meter-high mountains. If you venture deeper into Nagqu, its 1 city and 10 counties, covering 369,674 square kilometers, will offer countless surprises, with Biru County being particularly unique. Sapu, also known as "Sapu Gunlagabu," is a breathtaking glacier, snow-capped mountain, and lake that has remained largely unknown due to its deep valleys and difficult access. Starting from Biru County, it's about a 150-kilometer drive along Provincial Highway S303, with the first 90 kilometers being smooth asphalt and gravel roads. From Yangxiu Township to the foot of Sapu Mountain, the remaining 60 kilometers are rugged mountain roads. In short, this short 30-kilometer journey involves traversing mountains and valleys, making the driving route itself a captivating experience. The scenery of the snow-covered plateau is incredibly magnificent. In this place closest to the sky, a plateau, five hundred herdsmen, three thousand chanting monks, and one hundred thousand cattle and sheep together paint a stunning picture of heaven and earth. After winding through several small hills in the valleys, and turning a corner on a path mixed with mountain debris and glacial meltwater, the awe-inspiring Sapu Mountain appears before you. It evokes an unforgettable feeling; I would describe it as profound emotion. This is a resonance with the magnificent scenery before me, a dialogue with the glaciers and snow-capped mountains formed millions of years ago, a praise for those revered as divine mountains, and the surge of emotion I feel upon finally seeing you. The roar of engines pierced the morning light on the plateau. The "Third Pole Ultimate Off-Road Team" officially set off at the 16th Biru County Subi Nashu Culture and Tourism Promotion Conference, heading toward the "Must-Drive G558" route. This is no ordinary departure—the G558 line within Biru County has just received WRCA world record certification, recognized as the "Highest Altitude Ultimate Off-Road Rally Route." At the same event, the "Must-Drive G558" self-driving tour project was officially launched, connecting the Tang-Tibet Ancient Road, the Nujiang River Canyon, and the Nashu Grassland into a world-class scenic driving route. The wheels roll over more than just asphalt and gravel. They traverse the winds of the ancient Subi homeland, the paths walked by Princess Wencheng, and the drumbeats of the herdsmen's Guozhuang dance. In the polar region of Nagqu Nashu Biru, the team turns the wildness of the "Third Pole" into a moving landmark, while the G558 delivers the magnificence and warmth of Biru into the hands of every traveler. "Must-Drive G558" is not just another navigation route; it transforms Biru County from a "pass-through node" into a "destination gateway," packaging the highways, ancient roads, canyons, and Subi culture into a shareable cultural tourism IP. In terms of branding, "Polar Nagqu Nashu Biru" now has a strong, memorable identity. In terms of products, the G558 can link Sapu, the First Bend of the Nujiang River, the Tang-Tibet Ancient Road, the Subi intangible cultural heritage fashion show, and off-road team parades, forming a composite route of "self-driving + intangible cultural heritage + competitions + festivals." In terms of industry, it promotes the integration of "agriculture, animal husbandry, culture, sports, and tourism," allowing pastoral areas, towns, and merchants to connect to the service chain, contributing to rural revitalization and high-quality employment.

[Intro]: Driving the northern section of National Highway 317, long-distance driving requires a good rest. Arriving in Suoxian, Nagqu, this Home Inn is perfect for road trippers to take a break, so you don't have to worry about sleeping poorly on the plateau at night. ⛺[Local Must-Visit]: 🏯Zandan Monastery: Known as the "Little Potala Palace," it is very close to the hotel and within walking distance. Experience the magnificent Tibetan temple architecture, which is great for photos. ⛰Yala Mountain viewpoint, look out over the vast landscape of the northern Tibet plateau and experience the unique plateau scenery. 🛬[Travel Guide]: When driving on National Highway 317, it is recommended to stay one night in Suoxian to relieve driving fatigue. You can continue towards Baqen and Biru. When driving on the plateau, avoid strenuous activity and move slowly. 🏨[Accommodation Guide]: Recommended hotels/homestays to stay at during your trip 🧡[Tips]: 🔹The altitude of Suoxian is 3,980m. Slow down your movements after arrival. Do not run or jump. 🔹The temperature difference between day and night is huge. Pack a thick jacket and stay warm. 🔹Drink plenty of warm water and ensure sufficient sleep.

Overall, a five-star recommendation! The itinerary was perfectly paced, requiring no early mornings and avoiding a hectic pace. Being in the off-season, there was no way to change the tour dates; no matter how I adjusted them, the route was always reversed, starting at high altitude and gradually descending to lower altitudes, from Chamdo to Nagqu, and finally arriving in Nyingchi. (I also previously recommended a three-day trekking tour to Guru La Tso and Kula Kangri, which involved six days in high-altitude areas, making the return trip to Lhasa feel like a flat plain.) This reverse route was truly challenging. We were lucky with the weather throughout the trip, and the natural scenery at each attraction was absolutely stunning. One particularly attractive feature was the inclusion of aerial photography in the package, but unfortunately, the drone was barely used. I hope the travel agency can improve this service and not just mention it in the description. Namcha Barwa Peak: The hotel offered views of the snow-capped mountain. After dinner, a short hike uphill offered a chance to witness the sunrise over the golden peaks – a fantastic vantage point. Baipulanggou: A pristine, off-the-beaten-path high-altitude paradise (snow-capped mountains, grasslands, streams, and primeval forests abound). However, it's not very well-developed; the roads are terrible, even off-road vehicles struggle to access it, and we witnessed a vehicle get a flat tire halfway up. We ended up spending 300 yuan for a round trip by motorcycle, a two-hour journey. Although it was an optional excursion, seeing the scenery of the Second Pasture made it well worth the 300 yuan. The round trip is a 10-kilometer hike on difficult mountain paths; those with less stamina should mention they want to ride horses. It's a secluded paradise with few tourists and stunning scenery; those who love wild landscapes should definitely check it out. Sapu Sacred Mountain: The scenery is highly dependent on the weather. We came out of the inner lake and it started raining heavily. The scenery of the inner lake is breathtaking. If you can arrange to stay overnight at the inner lake, the experience will be unparalleled. Sacred Elephant Gate: The scenery is simply stunning, truly the essence of Namtso Lake. Unfortunately, due to road construction, it's impossible to get close to the attractions. A detour and transfer to a scenic area shuttle bus are required, a long one-way journey taking 7 hours on bumpy, dilapidated roads. The main point is, since we're already there, the experience should improve significantly once the roads are repaired. Finally, I must commend the driver. He worked incredibly hard, and whenever we encountered beautiful scenery, he would proactively stop to let us out for photos. I accidentally left my sunglasses at the Nagqu hotel, and he even went back to retrieve them for me – I'm incredibly grateful! 🙏 Overall, I give it a five-star recommendation! The itinerary was perfectly paced; no need to get up too early, and the days weren't hectic. Being in the off-season, there's nothing I can do; no matter how I adjust the tour dates, this tour always follows a reverse route, starting at high altitudes and gradually descending to lower altitudes, from Chamdo to Nagqu, and finally arriving in Nyingchi. (Previously, I also recommended a three-day trekking tour to Guru La Tso Kula Kangri. After six days of exploring high-altitude areas, returning to Lhasa felt like walking on flat plains.) After dinner, a short hike uphill offers a chance to witness the sunrise over the mountain – a great location. Baipulang Valley: A completely off-the-beaten-path high-altitude paradise (snow-capped mountains, grasslands, streams, primeval forests, everything). However, it's not very well-developed; the roads are terrible, even off-road vehicles struggle to get up. I personally witnessed a vehicle get a flat tire halfway up. In the end, I spent 300 yuan to take a motorcycle ride round trip, which took two hours. Although it's an optional excursion, seeing the scenery of the Second Pasture in person makes the 300 yuan worthwhile. The round trip is a 10km hike on challenging mountain paths; those with lower stamina should mention horseback riding beforehand. It's a less-traveled, breathtakingly beautiful hidden gem – a must-see for those who love wilderness. Sapu Mountain: The scenery is highly dependent on the weather. It started raining heavily immediately after we finished exploring the inner lake. The lake's scenery is stunning; if you can arrange an overnight stay there, the experience will be unparalleled. Holy Elephant Gate: The scenery is undeniable, truly the essence of Namtso Lake. Unfortunately, road construction prevented close-up views; a detour and shuttle bus were required, a long and bumpy 7-hour journey. Considering you're already there, the experience should improve once the roads are repaired. Finally, a big shout-out to our driver! He worked incredibly hard, stopping whenever we encountered beautiful scenery to let us out for photos. I accidentally left my sunglasses at the hotel in Nagqu, and the driver even went back to retrieve them for me. I'm so grateful! 🙏

G349 | Exploring Eastern Tibet | Jianaiyucuo National Wetland Park A must-drive in this lifetime | Jiali Station | The legendary October season really didn't lie to me‼️ Hey everyone, I just got back from Nagqu in Northern Tibet a week ago, and while I'm physically back, my soul is still floating on that 4,500+ meter plateau 😭. Before I left, the whole internet was saying "Don't go to Nagqu in August or September," but I didn't believe it and insisted on waiting until early October—thank goodness I listened to a seasoned traveler! October is the true legendary season in Nagqu. The sky is so blue it looks like the saturation was turned up, the snow-capped mountains are so clear you can see every ridge, and the best part—no crowds! 💰 This heartfelt guide covers everything: location, food, accommodation, routes, photo spots, and tips to avoid pitfalls. I've laid it all out for you, so just follow along when you go ✍️ · -- 📍Location (Where exactly is Nagqu?) Nagqu is in northern Tibet, with an average altitude of 4,500+ meters, making it the true "roof of the world's roof." This trip focused on the G349 Sichuan-Tibet middle route—starting from Lhasa and driving along the G349 all the way to Jiali County. Jianaiyucuo National Wetland Park is just 10 kilometers southeast of Jiali County, right next to the G349, and is a short 10-minute drive away. 🚗How to get there: Fly to Lhasa first, stay for 1–2 days to acclimate to the altitude, then rent a car or join a carpool to take the G349. The road from Nagqu to Jiali is paved the whole way and in good condition, but some high-altitude sections of the G349 are prone to snow and ice in autumn and winter, so be sure to check the weather forecast and road conditions before you leave. · -- 🍜Food (What to eat without getting scammed) When eating in Nagqu, remember one thing: stick to yak meat, don't look for Sichuan cuisine. Must-eat list 🔝 · Yak meat hot pot: Served in a copper pot, bubbling and steaming, with tender meat and fresh, non-greasy broth. In the city, I recommend the "Gaoyuanhong" restaurant, which is super popular. In Jiali County, you can just walk into any of the Tibetan restaurants near the hotels. · Yak meat noodles: Chewy meat and noodles with a clear, non-greasy broth, served with a bowl of tsampa and butter tea—warming and filling. · Tibetan yogurt: Served in a wooden bowl, the surface is set like pudding. A scoop is sour yet sweet, and sprinkling some white sugar on top is amazing. Keep a cup in your bag on the road; it's a great hunger-buster. · Dried yak meat: The "energy bar" of the Northern Tibetan plateau, available at Zhaxidele specialty stores. Avoid these 💣: Don't buy local specialties at the entrance of scenic spots! Yak jerky sells for 150 per jin at scenic spots, but the same stuff is only 80 at the city night market. Mobile payment isn't universal; many small shops outside the towns only accept cash. · -- 🏨Accommodation (Sleep well to play well) Nagqu has a high altitude, so when choosing a hotel, look for oxygen supply first, then heating! Even in July, it can feel below freezing at night in Nagqu, let alone in October ❄️ Nagqu City · Zangbei Yingbin Hotel: Good value for money, clean and spacious rooms, great oxygen supply, effective heating, and a rich breakfast. It has a parking lot and charging piles, making it car-friendly. · Siji Fuyang Hotel: 24-hour diffused oxygen supply with super quiet equipment, ensuring a good night's sleep. · Kaistone Hotel: Medical-grade oxygen supply, located on Liaoning North Road. Jiali County · Caikang Hotel: Three-star, with oxygen machines, warm rooms, and restaurants and supermarkets right at the entrance. · Yixuan Anlai Hotel: Opened in 2025, clean and comfortable, with floor heating + smart home system + oxygen supply. Avoid these 💣: Before booking, make sure to ask if they have 24-hour oxygen supply + floor heating. An "oxygen room" without floor heating is a waste of money. October is the tail end of the peak season, so accommodation prices may rise—book in advance. · -- 🗺️Route (3 days, 2 nights itinerary) Day 1: Lhasa → G349 → Jiali County (approx. 200 km, 4 hours) Start in the morning and arrive in Jiali by noon. In the afternoon, head straight to Jianaiyucuo! A light 6-kilometer hike around the lake with a gentle slope; it's at an altitude of 4,400+ meters but not too difficult. The reflection of the snow-capped mountains on the lake from the viewing platform is the perfect photo spot 📸. Stay in Jiali County for the night. Day 2: Jiali County → Dujun Grand Canyon → Niwu Township (approx. 110 km) In the morning, go to Dujun Grand Canyon, the first major bend of the Yarlung Tsangpo River, which is completely pristine and undeveloped. In the afternoon, arrive in Niwu Township—known as "China's last paradise," with an altitude of only 3,000 meters and a forest coverage rate of 97%+. Stay at the Yigong Zangbu Grand Hotel or Gama Xika Homestay in Niwu Township. Day 3: Niwu Township → Yige Glacier/Waterfall → Jiali County → Nagqu In the morning, visit Yige Glacier and the waterfall, then return to Nagqu in the afternoon. Note: There are no gas stations in Niwu Township, so be sure to fill up in Jiali County before you leave! · -- 📸Photo spots (Straight from the camera, no editing needed) · Jianaiyucuo: Due to its high mineral content, the lake water changes into seven colors under the sunlight, earning it the name "Seven-Colored Ocean." The reflection of snow-capped mountains and the blue-green gradient of the lake make every shot look like a screensaver. · Viewing platform: Climb the mountain behind the Sanhu Hotel in Jiali County for a bird's-eye view of the entire county and Jianaiyucuo. · Sapu Mountain: In October, the pyramid-shaped snow peaks of Sapu are bathed in golden light against a clear, deep blue sky. The wooden bridge and large rocks at the outer lake are classic photo spots. · Hangcuo Wetland Dark Sky Park: Included in the "World Dark Sky Reserve List," the best time for stargazing is from June to December. Just look up at night to see the Milky Way 🌌 · Along the G349: Pull over anywhere—the snow-capped mountains, grasslands, and yak herds look like a Windows desktop background in every frame. · -- ⚠️Tips to avoid pitfalls (Learned the hard way) 1. Altitude sickness is no joke: Spend 1–2 days in Lhasa to acclimate before arriving in Nagqu. Bring 2 cans of portable oxygen (approx. 300). Choose a hotel with oxygen supply, as altitude sickness is worst when sleeping at night. Don't run around on the first day; just rest for half a day. 2. Don't blindly go in August or September: That's the rainy season, with constant overcast and rain, so you won't see the snow-capped mountains. The road conditions are terrible, full of mud pits, and a 2-hour drive can take 4–5 hours. October is the legendary season, with clear and transparent weather. 3. Drive safely: Some sections of the G349 are narrow, with risks of landslides and falling rocks. The speed limit is 80 km/h for the entire route. Check the weather forecast before you leave, as roads will be icy on snowy days. Drive a high-clearance off-road vehicle or SUV. 4. Protect against sun and cold: The UV rays are intense, so use strong sunglasses, thick sunscreen, and plenty of lip balm. The temperature difference between day and night is large, so you can't have too many down jackets. The gusts of wind by the lake can give you a headache, so a windbreaker is a must. 5. Bring your own food and water: Jianaiyucuo is very undeveloped and has no supplies. A bottle of mineral water at the scenic spot sells for 15, which is 3 times the market price. 6. Take all your trash with you: This is a national wetland park, so please protect this sacred land. Nagqu is truly the kind of place where you think you're watching a documentary before you go, but once you're there, you realize you're living in one. No commercial hustle and bustle, just endless grasslands, crystal-clear sacred lakes, and rolling snow-capped mountains. In October, Northern Tibet has crisp winds, a transparent sky, and a sense of freedom.

Sapu Mountain Sapu Mountain, located in Puzonggou, Yangxiu Township, Biru County, Nagqu City, Tibet Autonomous Region, is one of the four sacred mountains of Tibet. Its main peak is the highest peak in the eastern section of the Nyainqêntanglha Mountains, with an altitude of 6956 meters. The most spectacular part of Sapu Mountain is its blue glacial valleys; the arrangement of the peaks and glaciers is breathtaking. Circumambulating the mountain is the most sacred ritual for Tibetan people visiting Sapu Mountain. Many have visited Lhasa and Nyingchi, but few have ventured deep into Nagqu in Northern Tibet. Hidden here is unparalleled scenery that few know about: pyramid-shaped snow peaks, blue ice glaciers, and colorful alpine lakes connected in a series. With few tourists, it retains the most primitive and pure appearance of the plateau. If you want to unlock a different side of Tibet, this niche loop in Northern Tibet is worth the journey. Entering this route, you will first encounter a thousand-year-old sea buckthorn forest. Patches of ancient sea buckthorn trees are rooted in the valley, weathered by time, with gnarled, vigorous postures, and greenery filling the valley. Admission to the scenic area is free. Stroll along the wooden boardwalks in the forest to feel the unique, tranquil atmosphere of the ancient plateau forest and experience the enduring vitality of the Tibetan land amidst the wilderness. Continue forward to reach Jionglacuo Glacier Lake, where the glacier extends directly to the lakeshore, and large chunks of blue ice float on the water. The lake water changes color with the light, surrounded by snow-capped mountains and vast wilderness. Without noisy crowds, there is only the silent dialogue between the glacier and the lake, allowing you to immerse yourself in the awe-inspiring power of this wild glacial lake. Not far away is the Three-Color Lake, where three lakes—black, white, and yellow—are arranged in a triangular pattern. Each lake has a distinct color, like a palette mixed by nature. The clear lake water is embedded among the mountains, with snow-capped peaks reflected on the surface. Every step offers a new view, and you can easily capture wallpaper-worthy photos. Along the way, you can view the Xiangela Glacier, where a massive wall of blue ice cascades down from the mountains. You can see the majestic appearance of the glacier while driving, offering a powerful visual impact. Continue your journey to the core destination: Mount Sapu. The iconic pyramid-shaped snow peak stands majestically, and the water of Samucuo Lake is clear and bright. On sunny days, the complete reflection of the snow-capped mountain floats on the lake surface, a beauty that leaves you speechless. After purchasing an admission ticket to enter the park, you can walk to the lakeshore to get close to the glacier, watch ice blocks float on the lake, and feel the majestic power of the billion-year-old glacier. The altitude here is high, so remember to slow your pace, avoid strenuous exercise, and gradually adapt to the plateau environment. At the end of the loop, you will arrive at the Holy Elephant Heaven Gate, where a natural stone arch on the north shore of Namtso Lake stands by the water. Standing on the cliff overlooking the vast lake surface, with the Nyainqentanglha Mountains visible in the distance and the endless blue water, you can personally experience the grandeur and sanctity of the holy lake and encounter the sunset glow of Northern Tibet. Northern Tibet is an original, ecological travel route, and road conditions in some sections are complex, so it is recommended to hire a car. Towns along the way are far apart, and there are few supply points, so prepare sufficient drinking water and snacks before setting out. The altitude is generally high throughout the route, so be sure to rest and prevent altitude sickness. Temperatures are extremely low in the morning and evening, so even in summer and autumn, you must prepare down jackets and windbreakers. Sun protection gear such as sunglasses and sunscreen is essential. Come to Northern Tibet, get away from the hustle and bustle of commercialization, and meet the glaciers, sacred lakes, and ancient forests. Understand that Tibet is not just about popular tourist attractions, but also this hidden wilderness.
