Spring Outing in Lhasa | Waiting for the Peach Blossoms to Bloom at the Foot of the Potala Palace
"Someone asked: 'You're in Lhasa, how can you get to Nyingchi to see the peach blossoms?'
I replied: 'Who says you have to rush to see peach blossoms?'"
While the whole of Tibet was buzzing with excitement about the peach blossoms in Nyingchi, I chose to stay in Lhasa for three more days.
I stayed at Muxi Tingfeng, a wooden house where you could hear the wind and see the Potala Palace.
Not to miss the blooming season, but to prepare myself for this spring feast in a slower, more leisurely way.
🌬️ Why "wait" for the peach blossoms in Lhasa?
Flying directly from the plains to Nyingchi to see the peach blossoms is certainly possible.
But those who truly understand travel know that the most beautiful scenery requires both body and mind to be prepared.
The most stunning moments of the Nyingchi peach blossoms are in the morning mist, under the evening sunset, and in the instant when they are framed alongside Namcha Barwa Peak. These "decisive moments" often require you to maintain ample physical strength and keen perception at an altitude of two to three thousand meters. • Muxi Tingfeng (木兮听风) was my "preparatory stop" in Lhasa.
• I spent three days here to acclimatize, letting my blood flow with the oxygen-rich bounty, and letting my heartbeat resonate with this sun-drenched city. Only when my body was ready could I finally head to the peach blossom feast beneath the snow-capped mountains—that would be the greatest respect for the beautiful scenery.

🪵 Muxi Tingfeng: A "Breathing" Wooden House
• The hotel is tucked away in a quiet neighborhood, with the Potala Palace to the east, within walking distance.
• "Muxi Tingfeng"—the name itself is a short poem. Extensive use of natural wood, from the beams and pillars of the lobby to the furniture in the rooms, creates a warm, inviting texture. The designer cleverly left gaps in the building, allowing the clear high-altitude winds to pass through, producing a subtle hum, like the ancient city breathing softly.
• My room had a full-length window, facing the silhouette of the Potala Palace.
· Waking up to the first rays of sunlight draping the Potala Palace in golden light;
Watching the silhouette of the Potala Palace gradually sink into the sea of stars amidst the whispering wind.
· The rooms feature diffused oxygen supply and underfloor heating throughout—Lhasa's gentlest comfort for travelers. Outside the window stands the majestic totem of a thousand-year-old faith; inside, a tranquil world with constant temperature and oxygen levels.

🫖 Three-Day "Preparation Period": Surrendering Yourself to Lhasa
· Before heading to Nyingchi, I spent three days of "doing nothing" at Muxi Tingfeng:
· Day 1: Arrival and Breathing
Checking in in the afternoon, I didn't go anywhere. I just sat by the window, watching the light slowly dance across the Potala Palace. I drank a cup of red date and longan tea served by the hotel, letting my body acclimatize to the 3650-meter altitude. In the evening, wrapped in a cashmere blanket, I went to the rooftop terrace, listened to the wind, watched the stars, and said goodnight to the Potala Palace.
* Day 2: Slow Travel and Warm-up
In the morning, I walked to Barkhor Street and followed the flow of people circumambulating the prayer wheels three times. I didn't seek anything, just felt the power of that focused concentration. In the afternoon, I basked in the sun at Jokhang Temple Square, watched the pilgrims prostrating themselves, and drank a pot of sweet tea. In the evening, I returned to the hotel and asked the butler to recommend a local Tibetan restaurant to try yak meat buns and butter tea.
* Day 3: Ascent and Panoramic View
In the early morning, I went to the Potala Palace (pre-booked) and climbed step by step to this sacred temple in the snowy land. Not to conquer, but to overlook the city from above, imagining that a few days later, I would stand at the foot of Namcha Barwa Peak, watching the same sunlight illuminate different snow-capped mountains.

🌸 Departure: Heading to a Peach Blossom Feast Beneath the Snow-Capped Mountains
* Three days later, my body was ready, and my heart was at peace.
* Traveling from Lhasa to Nyingchi is now very convenient. The Lhasa-Nyingchi Highway is a 4-5 hour drive, offering stunning views of the Nyang River along the way; alternatively, take the Lhasa-Nyingchi Railway high-speed train, a direct 3.5-hour journey with panoramic views right outside the window.
• During the Peach Blossom Festival (March 15th - April 20th), there are several must-see places:
• Gala Peach Blossom Village: The main venue for the Nyingchi Peach Blossom Festival, only 10 kilometers from Bayi Town. Peach orchards and wheat fields along the banks of the Nyang River complement each other, with snow-capped mountains in the distance as a backdrop—truly the image of "China's No. 1 Peach Blossom Village."
• Bomi Peach Blossom Valley: Certified by China National Geographic as "China's Most Beautiful Peach Blossom Valley." Centuries-old wild peach forests stretch for dozens of kilometers along the valley, with snow-capped mountains, glaciers, and peach blossoms creating a magnificent scene.
• Sosong Village: A secluded village deep in the Yarlung Tsangpo Grand Canyon. Standing here, facing the 7782-meter-high Namcha Barwa Peak, the peach blossoms at the confluence of "China's most beautiful mountain" and "the world's largest canyon" present a breathtaking blend of delicate beauty and grandeur—a photographer's ultimate dream.
· Qingduo Monastery: A hidden gem in Bomi. Red walls are enveloped in layers of peach blossoms, monks debate beneath the peach trees, and petals fall with the chanting—this unique Tibetan romance is worth a special trip.

📮 A message for those who want to see the peach blossoms
On the morning I left Muxi Tingfeng, I looked at the Potala Palace for the last time from the terrace.
The rising sun was gilding it, and the wind whistled through the gaps in the buildings. I remembered arriving three days ago, my breathing still a little rapid, my heart filled with trepidation about the unknown journey. Now, my body has adapted, my heart is at peace, and I feel as if I've been reborn under the high-altitude sun.
It turns out, the most beautiful journey isn't the fastest route, but the time you prepare yourself for.
Muxi Tingfeng was my "peach blossom preparatory station" in Lhasa.
Waiting for you to come and stay, and then, in the best possible condition, embark on that pink promise beneath the snow-capped mountains.
