Guide to self-driving tours in Vancouver Island towns in autumn.
🏕 Jordan River
The first stop is Jordan River, a quiet and pleasant driving destination. It’s an ideal base for exploring the surrounding area, and it’s refreshing to sit by the beach and watch surfers at China Beach and Mystic Beach showing off their skills, as if watching an autumn surf party.
.
🏕 Cowichan Bay
Then head to Cowichan Bay, a little gem tucked between Victoria and Nanaimo that exudes a strong fishing village feel. Artist studios and handicraft shops can be found everywhere in the town. It feels like stepping into a secret garden away from the hustle and bustle, and the soul is completely healed.
.
🏕 Ucluelet
If Tofino feels too crowded for you, head to Ucluelet, a low-key yet charming place just two and a half hours from Nanaimo. The pristine coastline makes people feel like they are in the embrace of nature. Every beautiful scene along the way makes you unable to help but click the shutter to record the tranquility.
.
🏕Parksville
Parksville is still charming in the fall, with its vast sandy beaches sparkling golden in the sun. Don’t forget to drop by Coombs Old Country Market to see the adorable goats basking in the sun on the rooftop and experience the town’s unique quirkiness.
.
🏕Ladysmith
Sandwiched between Victoria and Nanaimo, Ladysmith is a fitting rest stop on your road trip. Stroll through the center of the town, breathe in the fresh air, immerse yourself in the atmosphere of history, and rediscover your inner peace.
.
🏕Campbell River
Finally, drive north to Campbell River, an outdoor enthusiast’s paradise. Here, the Elk Falls Suspension Bridge is a place not to be missed. Standing on the suspension bridge and overlooking the magnificent natural landscape, you can't help but be shocked.

My first time catching sea urchins – achieving sea urchin freedom!
First time catching sea urchins
The clear water
A kaleidoscope of colors
Clearly clustered with sea urchins
Green and red, almost within reach
Carefully navigating forward
Unavoidably, I stepped on one of the little ones
A burst of sea urchins! 😓 So heartbreaking!
Encountered a few pretty little crabs
Took a picture, released them back into the water
Opened a sea urchin
Delicious and sweet
📌 Friendly reminder: No matter which beach/bay you fish on, always apply for a license first. Check the permitted species and numbers for that area, follow the rules, and don't exceed the limits!
📍Ken Forde Park

Baikie Island Nature Reserve
#holidayitinerary
Baikie Island Nature Reserve (sometimes called Baikie Nature Reserve) and the adjacent Raven Park in Campbell River, British Columbia. You'll find scenes of the restored estuary, interpretive signage, shoreline restoration, and lush regenerated landscapes. Location & Background
Baikie Island is situated within the Campbell River estuary on Vancouver Island. Formerly an industrial site—used in the mid-20th century as a log sorting and mill area—it’s now a protected nature reserve that forms part of a broader estuarine rehabilitation effort. Restoration Efforts. The Nature Conservancy of Canada acquired the site in 2000 and transferred it to the City under a conservation covenant. Restoration began in the early 2000s: invasive species were removed, soil was amended, large woody debris was added for habitat, native plants were installed, and trails—such as the Raven Trail—were constructed.
