We cruised through the Three Gorges and found them beautiful and fascinating to see. Our trip included a small boat excursion up a side channel, which was quite lovely. The scenery reminded me somewhat of the Milford Sound, with the mountains plunging directly into the river. The water level was raised about 170 meters by the dam project, displacing 1.3 million residents. Three Lesser Gorges From the boat we transferred to a ferry and then when the gorges became smaller as we headed up stream we switched to a sampan. There is little doubt that some of the attractions along the sampan tour are staged but that doesn't mean they are bad and the scenery is pretty special. The cliff burial caves are also interesting
