Where to escape the summer heat in August and September? Try traveling in the opposite direction – it's less crowded and cooler.
01 Sanya | Hainan
Don't let the heat deter you from Sanya in August and September. The rain comes in bursts, followed by sunshine, making it much more comfortable than the sweltering heat of inland areas. Both the Nanshan Cultural Tourism Zone and the Xiaodongtian Scenic Area are located by the sea. I recommend visiting Nanshan first in the morning. Enter as soon as it opens at 8:30 am; there are fewer people, and the sea breeze is cool. After seeing the Guanyin statue, it will be lunchtime. Find a local teahouse outside the scenic area to rest; it's half the price of inside. In the afternoon, head to Xiaodongtian Scenic Area. Enter from the west gate and walk along the coastal boardwalk; there's no uphill climbing, making it easy for both the elderly and children.
⚠️ You don't need to buy a full-price ticket for the scenic area's electric shuttle bus; the second half has better scenery and only takes about 40 minutes. If you have to choose between Wuzhizhou Island and Yalong Bay, I'd choose Wuzhizhou Island. Yalong Bay has fine sand and clear water, but it's extremely crowded during the summer holidays. Remember to book your Wuzhizhou Island tickets online a day in advance; the queues on-site can be incredibly long. The island's electric shuttle bus is worth taking; walking is too hot and tiring, so don't push yourself.
🍜 Have a bowl of Qingbuliang (a traditional Cantonese dessert) on the island for lunch—it's more refreshing than any trendy milk tea. In the evening, return to the city and go to the First Market to choose your own seafood. The processing fees at the nearby shops are clearly marked; don't trust the touts on the street.
02 Chongzuo|Guangxi
Chongzuo is an underrated summer resort. August and September have a lot of rain, but that's the peak season for waterfalls and mountains. For Detian Transnational Waterfall, definitely take a bamboo raft. ⏰ The light is best around 3 pm; the spray from the waterfall feels refreshing on your face.
⚠️ Buy bamboo raft tickets and entrance tickets separately. Don't be fooled into buying a combo ticket at the entrance; just buy it inside. For Mingshi Pastoral Area, rent a bicycle and ride slowly. 📍 Ride north from the scenic area entrance to Naguantun. The route is full of rice paddies and karst mountains, more interesting than taking a boat tour, which is crowded and hot. The Zuojiang Huashan Rock Paintings are located on the riverbank and can only be viewed by boat. Go in the morning when the river is calm and the reflections are clear. The boat trip takes about an hour; bring a hat as there's no shade on the deck.
🍜 In Chongzuo city, any restaurant serving Lao You Fen (a type of rice noodle soup) is delicious—sour, spicy, and appetizing, even more flavorful than Nanning's. For accommodation, I recommend staying in Daxin County; it's convenient for visiting Detian and Mingshi, and the prices are half that of guesthouses in the scenic area, with decent conditions.
03 Wenzhou|Zhejiang
Wenzhou is still hot in August and September, but Yandang Mountain is an exception. The temperature in the mountains is five or six degrees lower than in the city, especially in the Lingfeng Scenic Area. ⏰ Enter after 5 pm when the light is perfect, the mountains are bathed in a warm golden glow from the sunset, and there are also nighttime lighting displays—one ticket offers two views.
⚠️ The Lingfeng night view is best viewed after it's completely dark. Don't rush out; bring a bottle of water and sit on the stone benches for half an hour. The Yandang Mountain scenic area is spread out, so don't expect to see it all in one day. Choosing Lingfeng and Dalongqiu Waterfall is sufficient. In August, the water volume at Dalongqiu Waterfall is high; standing beneath it and being enveloped in mist feels like a natural air conditioner. Liu Bowen's hometown is in Wencheng County, far from Yandang Mountain, so it's recommended to allocate a separate day for it.
📍 The hometown scenic area isn't large, but the ancient buildings around Wuyang Academy are very quiet and not commercialized.
🍜 In Wenzhou city, just find any glutinous rice stall, add pork floss and fried dough sticks, and have a bowl of soy milk—it's more satisfying than hotel breakfast.
🚄 There's a high-speed train from Wenzhou South Station to Yandang Mountain, taking only about ten minutes. Don't be foolish and take a taxi on the highway; it's expensive and congested.
04 Fuzhou|Fujian
Fuzhou is hot in August and September, but the alleys of Sanfang Qixiang are breezy and cooler than the main streets.
⏰ Arrive before 8 AM, before the crowds arrive. The cobblestone streets are empty, and the wooden doors of the old houses creak – it's incredibly charming.
📍 Enter from Nanhou Street. First, stroll through Langguan Lane, then turn into Ta Lane. These two lanes are the least crowded, so you won't have to wait for a good spot to take photos. Nanhou Street, the main street, is heavily commercialized; just take a quick look around and don't waste time. Of the paid exhibition halls in Sanfang Qixiang, only the former residence of Lin Juemin is worth visiting; the others are similar. Save your ticket money to eat rouyan (meat swallow dumplings).
🍜 Tongli Rouyan Shop is located in the alley. A bowl of rouyan and a fish ball soup costs less than 30 yuan, and the broth is incredibly delicious.
⚠️ It's hottest between 2 PM and 4 PM. Don't try to walk around outdoors. Find a teahouse, have a pot of jasmine tea, and relax until 4 PM before going out again. In the evening, you can take a walk along the Antai River; the lights reflected in the water are cooler than during the day.
05 Yichang | Hubei
Yichang is great for escaping the summer heat in August and September, but don't combine the Yangtze River Three Gorges and Three Gorges Family Scenic Area visits on the same day—you'll be exhausted. Three Gorges Family Scenic Area is in Shipai. ⏰ Enter as soon as it opens at 8 AM. First, watch the wedding performance at Longjinxi, then walk through Bawangzhai. The whole trip takes about four hours.
⚠️ Don't bother taking the cable car in the scenic area. The queue is an hour long, and you only get a panoramic view. The walking path is much cooler. The Three Gorges Waterfall is a surprise. In August, the water volume is high. Wearing a raincoat and walking behind the waterfall is like walking through a water curtain cave—you'll be soaked to the bone, but it's incredibly refreshing.
📍 Raincoats are sold at the entrance of the waterfall scenic area for 5 yuan each; don't buy the expensive ones. The Qingjiang Gallery is best visited in the afternoon. Take a boat trip on the river. ⏰ The 3 PM boat is the least crowded, and the river breeze is so pleasant you can even take a nap.
🍜 Yichang's Liangxia (凉虾) is a local specialty, made with brown sugar water and rice flour. A cup costs only two yuan on the street and is more refreshing than milk tea.
🚄 There are tourist shuttle buses from Yichang East Railway Station to various scenic spots. Don't take a taxi; the shuttle bus is half the price.
06 Pingxiang|Jiangxi
August and September are the greenest months for the meadows at Wugong Mountain, but also the peak season for thunderstorms. Always check the weather forecast before you go up.
⏰ It's recommended to take the first-level cable car up and then hike to the Golden Summit. The whole trip takes about two hours. The meadows along the way are like a green ocean, rippling in the wind.
⚠️ Don't carry too much water. The supply points on the mountain are a bit more expensive, but it saves you energy. Every bottle of water you carry up is like a weightlifting exercise.
📍 Walk the boardwalk at the Golden Summit in the evening. The sunset paints the meadows gold, and the sea of clouds surges below. At that moment, you'll feel that all the hard work of climbing is worth it. Stay overnight in a tent on the mountaintop. ⏰ Get up at 4 AM to watch the sunrise. A sea of clouds combined with the sunrise, and if you're lucky, you might even see the Brocken spectre.
🍜 Be sure to try the Pingxiang fried rice noodles at the foot of the mountain. Rice noodles with stir-fried pork and chili, incredibly flavorful, a hundred times better than instant noodles on the mountain.
🚄 There are direct buses from Pingxiang North Station to Wugong Mountain, taking only one hour. Don't be fooled by unlicensed taxi drivers.
07 Ankang | Shaanxi
Ankang is in southern Shaanxi, much cooler than Guanzhong in August and September. Qianceng River is in Lan'gao County. 📍 The scenic area isn't large, but the water is absolutely stunning, a vibrant turquoise, like a miniature version of Jiuzhaigou.
⏰ Go in the morning when the sunlight shines on the water, making the color most translucent. The boardwalks in the scenic area are gentle, suitable for both the elderly and children, and the whole trip takes about two hours. Fengyan Ancient Terraces are in Han'yin County. At the end of August, the rice begins to turn yellow, and the terraces cascade down like fingerprints on the earth.
⚠️ The terraced field viewing platform is located on a mountain, and the road up is winding; novice drivers should proceed with caution.
🍜 Ankang's steamed noodles are a specialty, with a sour and spicy flavor. Served with a bowl of mung bean porridge, it's the perfect comfort food for lunch.
🚄 There are buses from Ankang city to Qiancenghe and Fengyan, but the frequency is low. It's recommended to drive yourself or hire a car, visiting only one place per day.
08 Ganzi Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture | Sichuan
August and September are the most comfortable months in Ganzi. The grasslands are green, and the snow-capped mountains are still covered in snow. Xinduqiao is a photographer's paradise. ⏰ The light is best at 7 am and 6 pm. 📍 Two kilometers east of the town, the poplar trees and Tibetan houses shrouded in morning mist offer wallpaper-worthy photos. Mugecuo is in Kangding. Take a sightseeing bus to the mountaintop, then walk down the boardwalk. The scenery along the way is much more breathtaking than what you'd see from the bus.
⚠️ Mugecuo Lake is at an altitude of 3,800 meters. Don't run or jump; walk slowly. Altitude sickness can cause severe headaches and make you want to cry. Daocheng Yading is the highlight, but don't expect to finish it in one day. ⏰ Enter the scenic area at 6 AM and start with a short route to Pearl Lake. Consider the longer route in the afternoon.
🍜 There's a Tibetan restaurant in Daocheng County that serves butter tea with yak meat buns. It's high in calories but very filling; have a meal before climbing. Hailuogou is in Luding. The glacier is still there in August. Take the cable car up; the ice crevasses beneath your feet are breathtaking.
⚠️ The weather in Hailuogou is unpredictable. Check the weather forecast before you go. On cloudy days, you won't see anything, and you'll waste your money.
🚄 The attractions in Ganzi are far apart. Don't try to see them all in one trip. Choose two places to explore in depth; it's better than rushing.
For escaping the summer heat in August and September, I'd pick from these eight places: Sanya for the beach, Chongzuo for waterfalls, and Ganzi for snow-capped mountains. Do you have a good idea of which destination you'd most like to visit? Share your thoughts in the comments!

August and September are the most comfortable months in Ganzi, with green grasslands and snow-capped mountains still covered in white snow.
