Daegu Must-Visit: Kim Kwang-seok Road, a Cultural Alleyway Through Time
When it comes to Daegu, one cannot overlook Korea's legendary folk singer, Kim Kwang-seok.
Born in Daegu, Kim Kwang-seok released his first album in 1989. His songs, known for their emotional lyrics, made him a soul figure in the Korean music scene of the time. Tragically, he passed away in 1996 at the age of 31, reportedly due to depression. However, his family has always disputed the suicide claim, believing it to be a case of foul play. His songs and untimely death are often referenced in Korean dramas, such as "Reply 1994," making him a familiar name to fans of the series.

(1) Kim Kwang-seok Road: This artistic mural street spans a short 350 meters but is packed with photo-worthy murals and sculptures. Visitors can pose with murals, sharing an umbrella with Kim Kwang-seok or holding a guitar like a soulful singer. Along the way, his songs play in the background, immersing you in his poetic world.
(2) Bank of Korea Currency Exhibition Room: After exploring Kim Kwang-seok Road, head towards Kyungpook National University Hospital. Opposite the hospital is the "Bank of Korea." Though it looks like an office building, don't hesitate to enter. The currency exhibition room is on the left-hand side of the first floor. Inform the security guard that you're there to visit the "exhibition room." The left side showcases the evolution of Korean currency, while the right side displays currencies from around the world, including vibrant notes from Central and South America and Africa. There's even a section featuring Taiwanese currency! It's a great stop to expand your knowledge.
(3) National Debt Repayment Movement Memorial Park: After 1895, Korea was forced to accept massive loans from Japan, which aimed to control Korea economically. To prevent the loss of economic sovereignty, local Daegu figures Kim Kwang-je and Seo Sang-don initiated a fundraising movement to repay the national debt. This park commemorates that movement and includes the "National Debt Repayment Movement Memorial Hall," which narrates the history of the time. It's a must-visit for history enthusiasts.
