[Daegu Attractions] Talk About Lucky! Riding the Palgongsan Cable Car for Stunning Mountain Views & Winning a Free Buckwheat & Chicken Noodle Combo at a Children’s Day Event!.
If you're looking to escape the city's hustle and bustle during your Daegu trip and soak up some pristine nature and refreshing phytoncides, Mount Palgong (Palgongsan)—the most famous mountain in Daegu—should definitely be at the top of your itinerary.
During this Daegu getaway, we set aside a day specifically to ride the famous Palgongsan Cable Car (팔공산케이블카). We were just expecting a laid-back sightseeing and hiking trip, but we were met with surprise after surprise! Not only were we healed by the majestic boulders and lush greenery at the summit, but we also stumbled upon a super fun festival event and even won a free lunch. It was absolutely a god-tier, perfect itinerary!
🚡 Stop 1: Riding the Bright Yellow "Palgongsan Cable Car" Straight to the Clouds
The starting point for the Palgongsan Cable Car is located in the commercial district at the mountain's base. The moment you arrive, you can spot the iconic, cute yellow cable cars zipping through the valley.
First-Time High-Altitude Views: As the cable car slowly ascends, your field of vision instantly expands. Looking out the window, the magnificent valleys of the Palgongsan mountain range unfold right before your eyes, with varying shades of green interwoven with pops of pastel pink mountain flowers. The steep slopes stretch out beneath your feet, and as you climb higher, you can even catch a distant glimpse of the Daegu city skyline. With the crisp mountain breeze blowing through the window cracks, we couldn't stop snapping photos of this breathtaking, soul-refreshing scenery!
Summit Photo Spot: Upon arriving at the upper station, we were greeted by an exquisitely designed observation deck. At the entrance sits a super eye-catching, bright yellow cable car photo zone called "8OSKYLINE." With the endless blue sky, fluffy clouds, and emerald mountains in the background, the photos turn out incredibly vibrant and playful. This is an absolute must-take shot when you get here!
🎁 A Surprise Twist: Stumbling Upon a Korean Children's Day Event & Winning a Free "Chicken Noodle Combo"!
Our timing for this visit was just impeccable! We happened to catch a Children’s Day special event (어린이날 행사) held inside the station. According to the schedule on the wall, early May featured a variety of interactive activities like sketching, face painting, cotton candy, and a "Lucky Roulette Wheel" (행운의 돌림판).
Just for the fun of it, we decided to give the prize wheel a spin. Who knew Lady Luck was on our side! When the pointer stopped, we actually won a free lunch on the spot! The event generously gifted us a piping-hot chicken noodle combo (닭국수 세트). Sitting in the summit’s scenic restaurant, overlooking Daegu's million-dollar mountain views while slurping down rich, savory chicken noodle soup with tender meat—paired with some refreshing, chilled buckwheat noodles... words just can't describe that level of satisfaction and pure bliss. It was hands down the most perfect surprise of our trip!
🥾 Stop 2: Tackling the "Sillimbong" Hiking Trail & Unlocking the Mysterious Bizarre Rock Landscapes
Fueled up and fully recharged, we followed the signs and hit the trail. The hiking paths at the peak of Mount Palgong are incredibly well-maintained. The whole way features gentle, easy-to-walk wooden boardwalks and clear signage, making it super friendly for independent travelers looking for a nice hike.
A Natural Forest Bath: Heading up the stairs, we were surrounded by a dense, lush canopy. We even spotted a few highly conspicuous, out-of-season red maple leaves that looked absolutely stunning against the emerald green foliage. Along the way, an adorable stone statue of a hiker ahjussi stands by the path, pointing the way to the "Naenggol Forest Bathing Area"—we just had to stop and snap a selfie with him.
The Mysterious "Coin Wishing Rock": As we kept walking, a massive, bizarrely shaped weathered boulder appeared right in front of us. Getting closer, it was genuinely mind-blowing—the entire surface of this giant rock was densely covered in countless Korean Won coins! This is a famous local wishing rock. Legend has it that if you can stick a coin firmly onto the uneven surface of the rock using nothing but your sincerity and a good sense of balance (no tools allowed!), your wish will come true.
⛩️ The Summit Finish Line: Sitting in a Traditional Korean Pavilion for 360-Degree Panoramic Mountain Views
Passing through the strange boulders, the trail culminates at an antique octagonal pavilion that gives off a rustic, woody aroma.
This pavilion rests quietly nestled next to the giant rocks and pine trees. Stepping inside, taking off your shoes, and sitting down, there is absolutely nothing blocking your view. Looking out, you're treated to 360-degree, unobstructed vistas of the magnificent mountains. The sky is as blue as a painting, and the white clouds feel close enough to touch. Sitting here, feeling the cool mountain breeze, listening to distant birdsong, and gazing at the rolling peaks below, every ounce of fatigue and urban stress is instantly washed away.
💡 Practical Info for Travelers
1 Attraction Name: Palgongsan Cable Car (팔공산케이블카)
2 Address: 51 Palgongsan-ro 185-gil, Yongsu-dong, Dong-gu, Daegu, South Korea
3 Transportation Tips: From downtown Daegu, take the subway to "Ayanggyo Station," then transfer to the "Express 1 (급행1)" bus and ride it straight to the final stop, "Palgongsan Natural Park." The cable car station is just a few minutes' walk from there.
4 Pro Tips: Mount Palgong has four distinct seasons—cherry blossoms in spring, a cool retreat in summer, mountains blanketed in red foliage in autumn, and a silvery winter wonderland. We highly recommend coming on a sunny day. It gets pretty windy at the top, so even if you visit in the summer, it's a good idea to pack a light windbreaker! The summit restaurant serves buckwheat noodles, Korean pancakes (jeon), and other Korean dishes, so you don't have to worry about going hungry.
