Where to go for a family trip in July? These 8 summer resorts are amazing
Taking your kids out in July, but worried about the heat and boredom? The southern "steamer" can be suffocating, while the northern grasslands offer a night breeze cool enough for a jacket. These 8 places are accessible within a 3-hour high-speed rail ride or a 2-hour direct flight. They offer streams for kids to splash in and ancient towns for adults to relax. It's time to change scenery—instead of staring at phones all day at home, go fishing, prawning, and stargazing.
01 Zhangjiajie | Hunan
⏰ Enter Wulingyuan at 7 AM. The mountain mist hasn't fully dispersed, and the temperature is just over 20 degrees Celsius. Preschoolers can head straight to Ten-Mile Gallery; with a ride on the mini-train, the stone peaks on both sides look like characters from a fairy tale, saving the whole family from walking.
🍜 At noon, find a shallow spot downstream in Golden Whip Stream, take off the kids' shoes, let them wade in the water and catch small fish, while parents sit on rocks and eat cold noodles.
⚠️ Remember: Don't enter the park at 1 PM. The sun will be directly overhead, and the cable car queue can "steam" you. Primary school students can challenge Huangshizhai; if they can't climb anymore, there's a cable car to fall back on. For middle school students, Tianmen Mountain is more recommended; walking the glass skywalk might make your legs weak, but the scenery is worth the price. Mountain weather changes quickly, so bring a light jacket and a raincoat.
02 Jinzhong | Shanxi
📍 Outside Yuci Old City, the brick carvings of Wang Family Compound are more realistic than those of Qiao Family Compound, and the courtyards are more spacious, so you won't be jostling with crowds. If your kids aren't interested in architecture, skip the indoor exhibits and take them to run wild on the Pingyao Ancient City Wall.
⏰ Go up the city wall at 4 PM. The light bathes the wall in a warm orange glow, and the shadows of the entire South Street stretch long.
⚠️ Absolutely do not visit Qiao Family Compound at noon; the un-air-conditioned side rooms are stifling like a steamer. For primary school students, Mianshan is a hidden gem: there's a Water Curtain Cave in the mountain, with splashing water, so getting wet means you won't feel the sun.
🍜 In the evening, eat a bowl of Wantuo at a noodle shop in Pingyao; the chili is so fragrant it makes the kids slurp, and a bowl is only 7 yuan.
03 Aba Prefecture | Sichuan
When bringing kids to Jiuzhaigou, don't rush to check in.
⏰ Enter the valley at 8:30 AM and head straight to Five Flower Lake—the water is as clear as glass, and when the sun shines on it, the green-to-blue layers will make kids exclaim, "The computer screensaver is alive!" At noon, eat self-heating rice at Nuorilang Center; the mountain temperature is just over 20 degrees Celsius, and you might still feel cool even with sun protection clothing.
⚠️ Don't bring a stroller; there are many steps on the boardwalks, so carry your child if they get tired. Shuangqiao Valley in Mount Siguniang is more suitable for younger children; the sightseeing bus allows hop-on/hop-off, and they can roll around on the meadows. For middle and high school students, you can challenge the travertine pools of Huanglong—the altitude is high, so walk slowly as a family. Don't mind the effort; it's worth it.
04 Lingshui | Hainan
Compared to Sanya's scorching sun and unfinished buildings, Fenjiezhou Island in Lingshui is a breath of fresh air.
🚄 Take the high-speed rail to Lingshui Station, then a 15-minute taxi ride to the pier. After arriving on the island, the water temperature is just right, and you can see clownfish directly in the shallows. Kids can put on life jackets and snorkel directly; the coach will lead them, so adults don't need to wade in.
🍜 At noon, eat a chicken leg rice on the island; the sea breeze blows, leaving you feeling neither sticky nor greasy.
⚠️ Absolutely do not go to Nanwan Monkey Island at noon; the monkeys are more energetic than people, grabbing bags and water bottles, which can easily scare children. If you want to bring seniors, stay at a guesthouse in Xiangshui Bay; open the window and hear the sound of the tide.
05 Ordos | Inner Mongolia
Xiangshawan is a place suitable for the whole family to enjoy the sun without getting burned—the sand isn't hot on your feet, the secret is to go after 6 PM.
⏰ A camel ride takes half an hour; the desert wind is so dry it feels like wearing an air conditioner, and kids can run wild sandboarding.
⚠️ If your child is under 8, you can skip Genghis Khan Mausoleum; the exhibits there are hard for children to understand. For primary school age and above, it's very worthwhile; the "Grassland Empire" from history textbooks suddenly comes to life. In the evening, return to the city to eat hand-torn lamb, paired with a bowl of yogurt, and all the day's heat will dissipate.
06 Taizhou | Jiangsu
The summer in Zhenhu has nothing to do with the muggy heat of Jiangnan.
🚄 Get off at Taizhou Station, take a 20-minute taxi ride to Zhenhu Wetland, and the temperature immediately drops by three degrees upon entering the scenic area. Hire a sculling boat; the boatwoman sings folk songs as she passes through the reeds, and the wind on the water varies, making the children doze off. Entering at 8 AM is the most cost-effective; there are fewer people, and you can see the egrets' feather patterns up close.
🍜 At noon, eat freshly made fish ball soup at a stall at the scenic area entrance; it's incredibly springy.
⚠️ Absolutely do not come at 2 PM; it's stifling even under the boat canopy. Suitable for children over five who can sit quietly on the boat and will be interested in freshwater creatures.
07 Kaifeng | Henan
To make children remember history, don't preach; let them play—⏰ Enter Qingming Riverside Landscape Garden at 5:30 PM; once the lights come on, the Song Dynasty market suddenly comes alive.
⚠️ Visiting Iron Pagoda Park during the day is scorching, but going to Bao Gong Ancestral Temple in the evening is much cooler; the courtyard is full of trees. Middle school students will enjoy the immersive experience here, and children wearing Hanfu won't look out of place.
🍜 In the evening, go to Xisi Night Market, order almond tea and stir-fried cold noodles; both are made on the spot, and kids will gather to watch the flames rise. If you want to play but avoid the sun, choose the Thousand-Handed and Thousand-Eyed Guanyin Hall at Xiangguo Temple; it's cool enough inside to wear a jacket.
08 Jilin
July at Songhua Lake is a secret summer escape for Northeasterners.
🚄 Take a taxi from Jilin Station to Fengman Pier, then a speedboat into the lake area; the mist from the water is refreshing.
⏰ Board the boat at 9 AM, circle Wuhu Island; the lake wind whistles, and the pine forests on the shore are dark green.
⚠️ Don't go to Rime Island in summer; that scenic area is only suitable for winter, going now would be a mistake. Younger children are more suited to playing with water guns by the lake, while older ones can try fishing by the lake or cycling around it.
🍜 At noon, eat steamed white fish at a lakeside fish restaurant; it has few bones and tender meat, and kids can eat two bowls of rice.
I've been to most of these 8 places, and the high temperatures and crowds in July are not an issue. Where are you taking your kids this year? Share in the comments—which place are you most interested in, and I'll dig up a few more hidden tips for you.
