📍Only a 30-minute train ride from Himeji and you get to refresh in peace. Sakoshi is a small seaside town which gives a lot more than its size. The walk from Sakoshi station along the old town, shotengai, it feels so epic and the picture perfect scenery 360 degrees is fulfilling. The street has good coffee shops so be sure to stop by at one on your walk to the beachside. Also try the croissant- ice cream a trademark of Sakoshi. There is also a sake brewery, it’s pricey, but it’s the real deal. The castle was built by Naganao Asano, and the Honmaru Garden and Ninomaru Garden are currently designated as national scenic spots. Unfortunately, the building no longer exists, but the turret happened to be open to the public, so I was able to climb the gate. One of my favorite early summer adventures was stepping far outside my comfort zone with a professional fisherman who also happens to be a good friend. This was a return visit to the site where Oishi Yoshio and seventeen other Ronin carried out seppuku in 1702, following the Ako Incident in 1701 at Edo Castle in Tokyo and the subsequent beheading of Kira. Their remains are laid to rest at the Sengakuji Temple cemetery, located a short walk away. Since my earlier visit, a trip to Ako where Asano and the 47 Ronin lived provided greater clarity to the story. The site is well marked in both Japanese and English but is tucked behind a public housing estate in Takanawa on what was originally the Hosokawa Family Garden. You can catch a glimpse of the garden through the gate. It's a compelling site for those intrigued by the story of the 47 Samurai.

Aside from the sea urchin, my absolute favorite was the sweet shrimp—cured with kombu, it had a slightly sticky texture and was wonderfully sweet. The torched fatty tuna was also amazing, packed with fish oil and literally melting in my mouth! ❥ The absolute highlight, of course, was the Hokkaido Hadate sea urchin mini chirashi—it was ridiculously fresh and sweet! ♡ Signature Fish Soup ❥ Shigefusa's signature fish broth, simmered for over 10 hours using more than 30 kinds of fish. The chef mentioned adding a wide variety of vegetables, creating incredibly rich layers of flavor. I absolutely loved this soup!
