Akyaka travel guide and discussion

Stand-up paddleboarding, better known as SUP, has become one of the most enjoyable ways to explore the coastline. And Türkiye—with its turquoise bays, sheltered coves, dramatic cliffs and crystal-clear waters—is an incredible destination for discovering the country from a completely different perspective. Instead of simply sitting on the beach, imagine standing on the water, paddling quietly along a hidden bay, looking down through transparent turquoise water and stopping for a swim whenever you find the perfect spot. Here are some of the most beautiful places in Türkiye to experience SUP. 🩵 1. Ölüdeniz, Fethiye — Paddle Through a Blue Lagoon Ölüdeniz is one of Türkiye’s most iconic coastal landscapes, and its calm lagoon makes it particularly attractive for SUP beginners. The sheltered water provides a peaceful environment for learning balance and getting comfortable on a paddleboard. From the water, the surrounding mountains and famous turquoise coastline create an unforgettable panorama. Best for: Beginners, first-time SUP experiences and scenic paddling. 📍 Fethiye, Muğla 🌿 2. Göcek — A Paddleboarder’s Dream Surrounded by pine-covered mountains and numerous secluded bays, Göcek offers a spectacular setting for exploring the Turkish Aegean by SUP. The protected coves and islands allow you to discover small beaches and quiet corners that can be difficult to reach from land. Early mornings are especially beautiful, when the sea can become almost mirror-like. Göcek is the place to choose if you want your SUP experience to feel like a slow journey through a Mediterranean postcard. Best for: Island-hopping, peaceful coves and longer exploration routes. 📍 Göcek, Muğla 🌲 3. Datça — Crystal-Clear Water and Hidden Coves Datça is one of the most rewarding destinations for SUP lovers looking for a quieter coastline. The peninsula is surrounded by numerous coves, many of which offer sheltered conditions during the calmer hours of the day. Palamutbükü, Hayıtbükü, Kargı and Bencik Bay are among the areas frequently associated with paddleboarding and other water activities. Bencik Bay is particularly atmospheric, with pine-covered hills surrounding the narrow inlet and calm water creating a beautiful natural setting for paddling. Best for: Nature lovers, beginners and discovering secluded bays. 📍 Datça, Muğla 🐚 4. Kaş — Paddle Above the Mediterranean Kaş combines spectacular Mediterranean scenery with exceptionally clear water. The coastline around Kaş offers numerous coves and small bays where experienced paddlers can explore the shoreline from the water. The underwater visibility can make even a short SUP session feel like a journey through an aquarium. For beginners, sheltered areas and calm morning conditions are preferable. More experienced paddlers can plan longer coastal routes, always taking wind, boat traffic and sea conditions into account. Best for: Clear water, snorkeling stops and Mediterranean scenery. 📍 Kaş, Antalya 🌊 5. Akyaka — Paddle Through a Different Kind of Landscape Akyaka offers something special: SUP isn’t limited to the open sea. The famous Azmak River provides a calm-water environment surrounded by lush vegetation, creating a completely different paddling experience from the Mediterranean and Aegean coast. For travelers who want to combine water sports with nature, Akyaka is an excellent addition to a Turkish summer itinerary. Best for: Calm-water paddling, nature and beginners. 📍 Akyaka, Muğla 🏝️ 6. Ayvalık & Cunda — The Northern Aegean’s Hidden SUP Gem When people think about SUP in Türkiye, the southern coast often comes first. But Ayvalık and Cunda in the North Aegean deserve attention too. The islands and sheltered bays around Ayvalık can create relatively calm paddling conditions, while the coastline offers a beautiful combination of turquoise water, rocky shores, pine trees and traditional Aegean scenery. Paddling around Cunda gives you a completely different perspective of the island and its surrounding coastline. Best for: Aegean scenery, sheltered waters and exploring by island. 📍 Ayvalık, Balıkesir 🌅 7. Marmaris & Selimiye — Paddle Into the Aegean Sunset The Marmaris and Selimiye coastline is filled with sheltered bays, forested hills and deep blue water. SUP is a particularly beautiful way to experience this landscape because you can move quietly along the shoreline without the noise of a motorboat. For the best experience, choose an early morning or late-afternoon session when the wind is calmer and the light creates beautiful reflections on the water. Best for: Sunset paddles, scenic bays and a relaxed Aegean atmosphere. 📍 Muğla ☀️ When Is the Best Time for SUP in Türkiye? The most comfortable period is generally late spring through early autumn, with May–October commonly recommended for SUP activities. However, conditions vary significantly by location and day. The most important rule is simple: Check the weather and sea conditions before launching. Even a sheltered bay can become challenging when wind increases. Beginners should stay close to shore, avoid strong winds and currents, and use appropriate safety equipment. 🏄♀️ Why SUP Is the Perfect Way to See Türkiye SUP isn’t just a water sport. It is a way of travelling. You can paddle into a hidden cove, stop for a swim, watch fish beneath your board, explore a coastline inaccessible by road and finish the day floating quietly beneath a Mediterranean sunset. From the turquoise waters of Ölüdeniz to the pine-covered bays of Datça, Türkiye offers an extraordinary variety of landscapes to discover from a paddleboard. So, where would you paddle first? 🇹🇷🌊 #Türkiye #TurkeyTravel #VisitTurkey #ExploreTurkey #SUP #StandUpPaddleboardingg #Paddleboarding #WaterSports #TurkishCoast #TurquoiseCoast #Ölüdeniz #Fethiye #Kaş #Datça #Göcek

Turkey's coziest town, which remains a hidden gem for many, is Akyaka, nestled on the shores of the Gulf of Gökova. You won't find noisy promenades or high-rise hotels here. Instead, you'll be greeted by white houses with wooden balconies, narrow streets, cozy cafes, and an incredibly peaceful vibe. 💙 What to do in Akyaka? 🚣 Take a boat ride on the Azmak River. The water is so crystal clear that you can easily see the aquatic plants and fish, even at the bottom. It almost feels like your boat is floating in mid-air. 🍽️ Dine at a riverside restaurant. Many eateries are built on stilts right over the water, serving up fresh fish literally caught that same morning. 🏄 Watch the kitesurfers. Thanks to the steady winds, the Gulf of Gökova is rated as one of the top spots in Turkey for this sport. Even if you don't surf yourself, it's a truly spectacular sight. 🏖️ Take a dip at the town beach. With its gentle slope into the sea and pristine water, it's the perfect spot for families with children. 📸 And don't forget to simply stroll through the town's streets. It's the kind of place where you just want to put your phone away, slow down, and soak in the moment. 💡 My advice: visit Akyaka for at least a day, but ideally, stay overnight. In the mornings and evenings, after the day-trippers have left, the town reveals a completely different, magical side. Akyaka is the ultimate destination for those looking to experience Turkey beyond the crowded popular resorts. It offers a perfect blend of beautiful nature, serenity, and local charm that makes you want to return again and again. Save this location so you don't forget to visit.

Akyaka is a cozy town on Turkey's Aegean coast. It's part of the Cittaslow ("slow towns") movement and is renowned for its natural beauty, distinctive architecture, and relaxed atmosphere. Akyaka Beach This long stretch of sand with a gentle slope into the sea is ideal for families. It's quiet and clean, with sun loungers, cafes, and showers. Sunsets are especially stunning: the promenade is beautifully illuminated, and the sea remains calm even in windy weather. The beach is also one of the best spots in Turkey for kitesurfing: steady winds and a protected bay create excellent conditions for both beginners and experts. Azmak River and Boat Trips The river flows right through the town: the water is so clear that you can see the bottom and underwater life. You can take a boat ride through reed beds and eucalyptus trees, spot turtles (Mauremys rivulata), and birdwatch. An alternative is a kayak tour: the current is gentle, making the route suitable even for beginners. Traditional Architecture and a Walk Through the Old Town Akyaka is known for its distinctive "Akyaka" style houses: snow-white facades, steep tiled roofs, carved wooden balconies, and octagonal chimneys. A restoration project in the 1980s made this architecture the city's signature feature. Stroll through the quiet alleys and browse the ceramics and woodworking shops—it's an "open-air museum." Mount Sakar (Sakartepe) and Viewpoints Mount Sakar towers over the city: along the way to the top, there are convenient spots for photos and rest. From the summit, panoramic views of the Gulf of Gökova and the Azmak River Delta open up. It's a good option for a short walk or a picnic; the views are especially spectacular at sunset. River Estuary Park and Relaxing Spots Gokova Park near the Azmak Estuary is a green, shady spot perfect for spending time with children. The grounds are well-maintained, with plenty of trees and paths for leisurely strolls. It's a great place to come after lunch, when the beach gets hot. Olive Farms and Tastings The area around Akyaka is home to numerous olive groves: some farms are open to visitors, offering tours and tastings of local oil. This is a chance to try the product "on the spot" and buy it directly from the producer. Karian Trail (Route Sections) Part of the Karian Trail, a popular trekking route, passes nearby. Short sections through pine forests are ideal for a short excursion: the trails are easy, there's plenty of shade, the air smells of pine needles, and the views of the coastline are beautiful. Riverside Gastronomy Azmak is lined with restaurants overlooking the water, serving fresh fish, mussels, meze, and Aegean vegetables. Be sure to try the fish wrapped in grape leaves and local desserts. In the evening, many establishments are decorated with lanterns, creating a truly atmospheric atmosphere.

Until recently, I thought stand-up paddleboarding was mainly something people tried once at a beach club for a photograph. This summer, however, I started noticing SUP boards almost everywhere—from quiet Aegean bays to the rocky coves of the Mediterranean. After seeing how closely it connects people with the sea, I finally understood why it has become so popular. What makes SUP special is not speed or adrenaline. It is the feeling of slowly moving across the water while discovering the coastline from a completely different perspective. From the shore, a rocky bay may look small and ordinary. Once you are on the water, hidden cave entrances, dramatic cliffs and tiny coves begin to appear. Places that are difficult to reach on foot suddenly feel surprisingly close. For me, the most memorable part was the contrast between the bright sunlight outside and the cool shadows near the caves. The water was so clear that I could see the rocks below the board. At first, balancing looked more difficult than it actually was. Starting on my knees, keeping my eyes ahead and making slow paddle strokes made the experience much easier. After a while, the board felt less like sports equipment and more like my own little platform for exploring. Early morning is definitely the best time to try it. The sea is usually calmer, the beaches are quieter and the light is perfect for photographs. Wind can change the experience very quickly, so beginners should stay close to the shore, use the safety leash and check the conditions before setting out. A waterproof phone case and drinking water are also worth carrying. SUP is now especially popular around Kaş, Göcek, Fethiye, Marmaris, Datça, Akyaka and Antalya, where calm bays, sea caves and high cliffs create incredible routes. But the real attraction is not just the scenery. SUP offers a peaceful break from crowded beaches, a gentle full-body workout and the chance to explore without the noise of an engine. I now understand why so many people are choosing a paddleboard instead of spending the entire day on a sunbed. It turns an ordinary swim into a small adventure—and sometimes the most beautiful part of the coastline is waiting just beyond the beach. Would you prefer paddling through a sea cave, beside dramatic cliffs or toward the sunset? #SUP #PaddleBoarding #Türkiye #TravelTürkiye #AegeanSea #Mediterranean #Kaş #Göcek #Fethiye #Marmaris #Datça #HiddenCoves #OutdoorAdventure #SummerInTürkiye

A small village with Ottoman-style houses that we fell in love with after our first visit. Many people haven't even heard of it, but trust us, it's one of the best places to relax in Turkey! Akyaka is a place free from noise and hustle, where you won't find loud and drunk tourists, night parties, or all-inclusive hotels. If tourists do come here, they behave so quietly that you hardly notice them🫣😅 When visiting, you must take a boat ride along the Azmak River! This place is often called "the aquarium" due to its incredibly clear water, where you can see everything down to the very bottom! After the boat ride, you can relax at a riverside restaurant... The cool breeze from the river is refreshing, and geese swim up, begging for food.
