Kangding truly hides so many surprises! Stop crowding the popular spots; Cuona Lake on Gaersi Mountain in Xinduqiao is my personal hidden treasure. It’s not a fenced-off scenic area. Just search for “Gaersi Sacred Mountain/Cuona Lake (Gaersi Mountain)” on your navigation app. It’s near the Gongga Dressing Table Viewing Platform, part of Zhusan Township’s wild wetlands. At about 4,450 meters above sea level, it’s a typical highland glacial lake. The water is all melted snow from the mountains. In winter, the blue ice that forms is as clear and gem-like as a jewel, while in summer, the water is so clear it reflects the Gongga peaks perfectly. There are no entrance fees or commercial facilities here; you have to explore on your own. Four-wheel-drive vehicles can drive right up, but for two-wheel-drive cars, it’s best to park at the photovoltaic power station and hike 10 minutes to the lake. The wind is strong and the temperature difference is big, so be sure to bring warm clothes, sun protection, and altitude sickness remedies. Standing by the lake, the main peak of Gongga is right before your eyes. If you’re lucky, you can capture the golden sunlight on the mountain and the rolling sea of clouds. Xining Baima Temple: An Ancient Hehuang Monastery, the Source of the "Flame" of the Later Spread of Tibetan Buddhism On the Danxia cliff face, a hanging temple is built against the mountain, with the Huangshui River flowing endlessly in front of it. This place not only guards the physical remains of Lachen Gomba Raosai but also rekindles the flame of Tibetan Buddhism after a century-long interruption. On the mid-cliff of Hongyazi Valley in Huzhu Tu Autonomous County, a temple seems to grow out of the red Danxia cliff. This is Baima Temple, known in Tibetan as "Mazangguan." Standing in front of Baima Temple, the Huangshui River quietly flows below, and across the river are the modern buildings of Ping'an Town. Covering an area of only 4,516 square meters, this temple is a provincial-level cultural relic protection unit in Qinghai Province. · -- 01 Historical Origins The establishment of Xining Baima Temple is closely linked to a catastrophe in the mid-9th century during the Tibetan Empire. In 841 AD, Langdarma, the last emperor of the Tibetan Empire, launched a large-scale anti-Buddhist movement. Temples were closed, Buddhist scriptures burned, and monks forced to return to secular life or flee. To commemorate this white horse, devotees made a white horse statue inside the temple, and the temple was thus named "Baima Temple" (White Horse Temple). Another theory suggests that this temple was the first Buddhist temple built in the Amdo region, similar to the White Horse Temple in Luoyang, Henan, hence the name. In Tibetan, Baima Temple is called "Mazangguan," where "Ma" and "Zang" are derived from the names of the two "Three Wise Masters," Mar Shakyamuni and Zang Raosai. 05 A Millennium of Changes Over its more than 900-year history, Baima Temple has undergone multiple destructions and reconstructions. Auspicious beasts at the eaves hold fragments of jade, moss on the steps is frosted, and even the ceramic pots in the corners hold half a cup of snowlight.
