Short, quick rain showers occur occasionally in the mountains. 👉 Weather: It's in the 20s (°C) at the base, but much cooler at the summit. Most days are sunny, though it gets very foggy in the mountains after rain. 🏔️ Key route 👉 Suggested route: Tourist Center, take the cable car up, Zijigong Temple, Haohan Slope, Diaomazhuang, Golden Summit 🔹 Zijigong Temple: The stop after taking the cable car, a good place to rest briefly and grab some snacks and drinks. 🔹 Haohan Slope: Lots of stairs, which can be tough on the legs. Don't push yourself too hard; take breaks as you go. You can see vast meadows around here, and the view gradually opens up. 🔹 Diaomazhuang: This is where the large alpine meadows are. You can see the grass swaying in waves in the wind. Make sure your shoes are non-slip and durable; there are many stairs, and some paths can be damp and slippery. 👗 Bring a hat and sunglasses, as the UV rays are strong on the mountain. You might want to bring a bamboo walking stick to save energy while hiking. 👗 The weather in the mountains changes quickly, so carry a raincoat with you; umbrellas aren't suitable for the mountain. 👗 Know your limits. During the National Day and Mid-Autumn Festival, half of my social media feed was crowded into tourist attractions, and the other half was stuck in highway traffic. But I packed my bag and went to Wugong Mountain—taking a route that avoids the main gate crowds: the Longshan Village reverse traverse. Historically, it was known as one of the "Three Great Mountains of Jiangnan" along with Mount Heng and Mount Lu. 100,000 mu of alpine meadows stretch along the ridge above 1,600 meters. This season, the meadows are transitioning from green-gold to golden yellow. While others were queuing for cable cars in the scenic area, I enjoyed the entire meadow on the ridgeline all to myself 🌾 🚗 Getting there | From high-speed rail to the trailhead Depart from Guangzhou, 3.5 hours by high-speed rail to Pingxiang North. After exiting the station, carpool to the Longshan Village "Erzi Tou" trailhead, 30–40 yuan/person. The driver heard I was doing a reverse traverse and gave me a second look: "Young lady, hiking alone? Stay safe." At the Longshan Village trailhead, scan the code to pay a 10 yuan sanitation fee—this is the only "ticket" to enter the mountain. Compared to the 70 yuan ticket + cable car fee at the scenic area, the money saved on the reverse traverse is enough to buy two extra bowls of instant noodles at the summit. 🌿 Day 1 | Bamboo forests, climbing, and the first glimpse of the meadows Depart from Longshan Village at 9 AM, altitude about 560 meters. But after crossing the last ridge—the sea of clouds spread to the horizon, and the sunrise dyed the entire meadow gold. At that moment, all the "whys" had an answer. Continue to the Golden Summit (altitude 1,918.3 meters). The 1,918-meter stone monument is full of people queuing for photos—I suggest walking 200 meters to the side meadow, where no one is fighting for a spot, and the entire sea of clouds and meadow is your backdrop. For the descent, choose the two-stage cable car (about 1.5 hours) to protect your knees. 💡 A few sincere tips 1. While the autumn colors are just right, while the meadows are turning yellow—this National Day and Mid-Autumn Festival, go to Wugong Mountain. Measure the clouds with your footsteps and throw yourself into the 100,000 mu of meadows and the sea of clouds. 1️⃣ Zhangye, Gansu When bringing kids to Zhangye, don't rush straight to the Danxia landforms; kids get bored easily. I suggest visiting the Giant Buddha Temple in the morning. The scenic area has a fixed shuttle route; don't try to do too much with kids—two viewing platforms are enough. Save your energy for the sunset. ⚠️ The Danxia boardwalk is windy, so bring a light jacket for your child. It gets crowded at sunset, so don't squeeze into the highest point; the mid-mountain vantage points are quieter. This way, adults aren't exhausted, and kids stay interested. 2️⃣ Shennongjia Forestry District, Hubei Shennongjia is perfect for families who want to take it slow and just run wild in the forest. Enter the eco-tourism area in the morning; the air is cool and smells of pine needles and earth. Walk the Jinhouling trail with your kids—it's gentle, and the sound of the stream follows you the whole way. Even a 5-year-old can finish it on their own. Have lunch near Dajiuhu; food in the scenic area is pricey, so I recommend bringing your own sandwiches and fruit for a picnic on the grass. In the afternoon, take the small train around the lake; kids will be excited to watch from the window the whole time. ⚠️ Mountain weather changes quickly. A raincoat is more practical than an umbrella, and definitely put waterproof shoes on your kids. If you're short on time, you can skip Banbiyan; the scenery is repetitive and it's tiring. This trip lets kids experience real, primitive wilderness, which is much more interesting than a playground. 3️⃣ Tongren, Guizhou Fanjingshan is beautiful, but you need a strategy when traveling with kids. My advice: don't attempt the Red Cloud Golden Summit. The steps are steep and narrow, and carrying a child is too dangerous. The Old Golden Summit loop is enough; the view is just as expansive, and you can see the sea of clouds. ⏰ Arrive at the mountain gate before 8:00 AM, or you'll be questioning your life choices while waiting for the cable car. Book tickets on the official account 3 days in advance; you basically can't buy them on the day. Stay at Zhaisha Dong Village at the foot of the mountain. There's a bonfire party in the evening where kids can dance along while adults sit nearby with a cup of tea. 🍜 The sour soup fish in the village is great; the broth is appetizing, and kids can eat 2 bowls of rice with it. ⚠️ There are few supply points on the mountain, so carry your own water and snacks—don't count on buying them halfway. No need to rush the itinerary; just 1 core spot per day keeps the kids happy and you stress-free. 4️⃣ Yuxi, Yunnan Fuxian Lake is one of the most stress-free lakes I've visited with kids. The water is as clear as glass, and kids can spend the whole afternoon wading and picking up shells on the shallows. 📍 I recommend the beach on the side of the Luchong Scenic Area; the slope is gentle and safe. I don't recommend cycling around the lake with very young kids—it's windy and sunny. Just rent an electric scooter for a short ride. Have copper pot fish at a farmhouse near the lake for lunch; the fish is tender and the soup is fresh—even picky eaters will drink 2 bowls. The sun is harsh in the afternoon, so hide in your homestay for a nap and come out in the evening. Don't bother with Ailao Mountain this season; it's far, the scenery is monotonous, and it's not worth the hassle with kids. ⚠️ Sun protection is key. The high-altitude UV rays are no joke, so don't forget hats, sunscreen, and sun-protective clothing. Fuxian Lake is for a slow pace; don't over-schedule. Just hanging out by the lake is the best way to play. 5️⃣ Linyi, Shandong For these spots in Linyi, I strongly suggest picking only 1, otherwise, the kids will get tired and cranky. The Firefly Water Cave and the Underground Grand Canyon are not far apart and can be visited together. Go to the water cave in the morning and take a boat to see the fireflies twinkling overhead. Kids will gasp in quiet wonder, and even adults will be moved by the quiet, magical feeling. Head to the Grand Canyon in the afternoon. It's cool inside the cave, but there are many steps and strollers won't work, so I don't recommend the full route for children under 3. Yimeng Mountain has nice scenery, but it takes a long time to climb, so it's better for older kids. ⚠️ These 2 scenic areas are crowded during holidays, so be sure to book tickets online in advance; queuing to buy tickets on-site will drive you crazy. 🍜 The pancake rolled with green onions sold at the entrance is just for kids to taste—don't make it a main meal, it's too hard. Return to the city to stay after playing; there are more dining options, and it's better than staying near the scenic area, which is expensive and has average conditions. 6️⃣ Hainan Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture, Qinghai This place is at a high altitude, so let your kids acclimate for a day first. Riyue Mountain is windy, and kids will get out of breath after running a few steps, so don't plan anything too strenuous. 📍 Have lunch in Daotanghe Town; the lamb skewers are fresh, and the kids will be eating with greasy faces. Go to the Guide National Geopark in the afternoon. The Danxia landforms are very colorful, and kids will ask "Why are the mountains red?", which is a great chance to teach them some geography. ⚠️ There's no shade in the park, so hats and sunglasses are a must, and don't skimp on sunscreen. ⏰ It's most beautiful in July and August; it's a bit cold during the National Day holiday, so a thick jacket is a must. This place isn't for families seeking comfort, but if your kids love geology and nature, they'll get an experience they can't get elsewhere. Choose accommodation in Guide County; it's cleaner than around the scenic area and convenient for the return trip the next day. 7️⃣ Changde, Hunan The Peach Blossom Spring Scenic Area is more suitable for family trips than I imagined. Enter from the North Gate in the morning and walk along the Qinxi River. The road is flat with plenty of shade, so kids can run and jump without getting tired. The stream is shallow; you can take off your shoes and wade in the summer, but it's a bit cool during the National Day holiday, so just look. 📍 Kids will be curious about the rice paddies and farmhouses in Qingu Valley and will ask questions—it's more effective than reciting ancient poems. Have lunch at a farmhouse in the scenic area; Lei Cha (pounded tea) is a must-order, paired with side dishes. Kids will enjoy drinking it like a beverage. Watch the "The Peach Blossom Spring" live performance in the afternoon; choose seats in the middle of the back rows for a good view without the noise. ⚠️ It's more cost-effective to buy the show ticket and admission ticket together; buying them separately is much more expensive. The pace of the whole scenic area is relaxed, no need to rush, suitable for strolling slowly with the elderly and children. If you have extra time, you can skip cycling around the nearby Liuye Lake; the scenery is average, and it's better to spend more time in Peach Blossom Spring. 8️⃣ Pingxiang, Jiangxi When taking kids to Wugong Mountain, I advise you to only take the cable car up and down. The hiking route has nice scenery, but kids won't be able to walk it, and you'll be the one suffering in the end. ⏰ Get up the mountain before 8:00 AM for a higher chance of seeing the sea of clouds. Kids will be excited and shouting when they see the clouds under their feet. The meadow at the top of the mountain spreads out; just find a place to sit down for a picnic, and when the wind blows, you'll feel completely relaxed. 🍜 There are roasted sausages and hot drinks for sale at the top, but the prices are on the high side, so it's more practical to bring your own snacks. ⚠️ The Golden Summit is windy, so you must wear a thin down jacket—don't underestimate the temperature at the summit. If the kids are tired on the way down, you must take the second section of the cable car; don't save that money.
