Here's a little-known fact: traveling to the north or the central plains in August can offer a much better experience than the tropics. Within a two-hour high-speed rail ride, some places are cool enough to save on air conditioning, while others are wild enough to keep kids talking all semester. 1️⃣ Nanyang, Henan Before entering Laojieling, be prepared—the temperature in the mountains can be 10 degrees lower than in the city. I arrived at 3 PM that day, and the wind made it a bit chilly. My child bundled up in a jacket and ran uphill, surrounded by lush greenery. The path is easy to walk, and you can push a stroller for most of the way, but you'll need to carry your child up the last few steps. ⏰ It's recommended to go up the mountain in the morning and have a "guopo chicken" (chicken cooked in a pot with flatbread) at a farmhouse restaurant at the scenic area entrance for lunch. The chicken is freshly killed, and the flatbread stuck to the pot soaks up the broth, leaving the child's hands greasy from eating. ⚠️ There are many mosquitoes in the mountains, so be sure to bring long pants and mosquito repellent. If your child is interested in dinosaurs, spend another half day at Xixia Dinosaur Park, where you'll be dazzled by the abundance of dinosaur egg fossils. 2️⃣ Urumqi, Xinjiang In August, Urumqi is hot but dry during the day, and it's comfortable as long as you stay in the shade. 📍 I took my child to the Grand Bazaar for a morning. The domes and pillars were incredibly beautiful, and ethnic instruments chimed. 🍜 We had lunch at Erdaoqiao Market, just a few steps away. The baked buns had crispy crusts and generous fillings; my child ate two. In the afternoon, we went to Hongguang Mountain. The view from the top was expansive, and we could see the Tianshan snow line. 🚄 It takes about an hour by taxi from the city to Dabancheng. The wind turbine fields stretched as far as the eye could see, and my child's first words after getting out of the car were, "It's so windy." In the evening, we returned to the Grand Bazaar pedestrian street, where watermelon and Hami melon were sold for three yuan a slice at roadside fruit stalls, so sweet they were sticky. ⚠️ Don't skimp on sunscreen and hats; the sun here is unforgiving. 3️⃣ Beijing The Forbidden City in summer is definitely crowded, but there's a way to catch a breath—take the west route. 🍜 I entered through the Meridian Gate that day and headed straight for Cining Palace and Shoukang Palace. There were fewer people, and we could visit the Treasure Gallery. My child stared at the clocks in the glass display case for 20 minutes without moving. ⏰ After 4 PM, the crowds in the Forbidden City began to disperse, and the light cast a warm orange glow on the red walls. If your child is tired of walking, Beihai Park is a better option; you can row to shore in less than half an hour. You can push a stroller in the Summer Palace, but the stone path along the Long Corridor is a bit bumpy. The Hall of Prayer for Good Harvests in the Temple of Heaven Park is beautiful, but with kids, I recommend shouting a few times at the Echo Wall; your child will love it. ⚠️ All venues require advance reservations, especially the Forbidden City; booking a week ahead is not too early. 4️⃣ Dongying, Shandong The Yellow River Delta is, how should I put it, a place where children can see with their own eyes what the word "yellow" means. 📍 Driving into the Yellow River Estuary Eco-tourism Area, the reeds on both sides of the road were taller than a person, rustling in the wind. At the estuary, the yellow and blue demarcation line was as clear as if it were painted. My child stood there for a while and asked me why the water was two colors. The tour boat sailed to the boundary, where the river and sea collided, creating large but stable waves. ⏰ It's recommended to arrive before 10 AM for good light and to avoid the sun. ⚠️ The scenic area is very large, so you must take an electric shuttle; walking will be exhausting. Have lunch at a nearby fishing village restaurant; the Yellow River carp is so fresh you'll drink all the soup. 5️⃣ Chuzhou, Anhui Langya Mountain is cool from the moment you enter. The mountain isn't high; you can reach halfway up in 30 minutes, with streams gurgling along the path. My child squatted by the stream playing in the water, while I sat on a rock enjoying the cool air. 🍜 There's a Shenxiu Lake on the mountain, and a pavilion by the lake sells tofu pudding and tea eggs. The tofu pudding is smooth and tender, and my child enjoyed it very much. Langya Temple at the top of the mountain is surprisingly quiet, with a faint scent of incense. With kids, you don't have to climb all the way to the top; sitting in Zuiweng Pavilion halfway up is very comfortable. ⏰ It's recommended to go in the afternoon; the sunlight filtering through the trees creates dappled shadows, which are great for photos. There's a street at the foot of the mountain selling various small trinkets, where kids can browse for half an hour. 6️⃣ Haixi Mongol and Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture, Qinghai Golmud is an underrated family-friendly destination. 📍 Qarhan Salt Lake is just outside the city, a 20-minute drive away. The lake surface is vast and white, dazzlingly bright in the sun, and children can see salt flowers growing freely on the lakebed. ⚠️ The salt lake is windy, so bring an extra jacket for your child. Driving from Golmud to Da Qaidam, Emerald Lake is as colorful as a painter's palette. Chaka Salt Lake is more famous but also more crowded; I entered at 4 PM that day to avoid the strongest sunlight. The Kunlun Mountains are impressive from a distance; my child pointed out the snow line from the car the whole way. 🚄 Getting here can be a bit of a journey, but the experience is worth it. The weather in August is cool; sometimes you even need to wear two layers of clothing. 7️⃣ Anshan, Liaoning Qianshan in Anshan is perfect for the laziest way to travel with kids. 📍 There are electric shuttles right at the scenic area entrance that take you directly halfway up the mountain. The remaining path has gentle slopes, so a stroller is perfectly fine. My child ran through the woods, and I followed leisurely behind. 🍜 There's an old restaurant at the foot of the mountain that makes something called "xiaoguobing" (small pot cakes). They're baked until fragrant and crispy, and served with pickled cabbage and pork. My child can finish a whole small pot. ⚠️ Some temples in Qianshan only open in May, but they are all open during summer vacation, so you can visit them along the way. In the evening, return to the city center; the night market near Anshan Station is lively, with sizzling hotplate squid that captivates children. 8️⃣ Lingshui County, Hainan Hainan is hot in August, but Lingshui is an exception. 📍 Fenjiezhou Island is a 10-minute boat ride from the pier. The seawater is crystal clear and blue, and the waves aren't big, so children can float with a swimming ring. Coconuts are sold on the beach for 10 yuan each; you can stick a straw in and drink it while squatting, very Hainanese. The monkeys on Nanwan Monkey Island are very clever and will snatch plastic bags, so be sure to hide your food well. ⚠️ It's recommended to go in the morning; it gets too hot at noon, and children can easily get sunburned. In the evening, return to Lingshui County town; there are small shops selling sour noodles, which are spicy and appetizing. My child surprisingly ate two bowls. If you have enough time, you can spend two days, staying on the island for a night to watch the sunrise, then spending half a day with the monkeys on Monkey Island.
