The air outside is so cold that your breath turns into mist. Your hair, eyebrows, and eyelashes start to freeze into ice crystals. Yet, your body is immersed in hot water, with warm steam rising constantly. This is a natural hot spring, formed by geothermal heat from Changbai Mountain, which is an ancient volcano. Rain and snow seep underground, heated by the volcanic rock layers, and then emerge as mineral-rich hot spring water. The feeling when you first enter the water is "relief" and "instant relaxation." But as soon as you step out of the water, even for a few seconds, the cold wind hits your skin so hard it feels like your body is freezing instantly. You have to rush back into the water without hesitation. The uniqueness of soaking in the onsen here is not just the warm water, but the extreme contrast between the heat of the water and the brutal cold of the surrounding air. Surrounded by pure white snow, with steam rising into the cold night, the atmosphere is quiet and peaceful, like your body is truly resting after enduring the cold all day.
