A lie-flat vacation: beautiful scenery, fewer crowds, and budget-friendly
Do you think traveling in August and September means battling crowds and overspending? Beyond your usual travel guides, there are several severely underrated "lie-flat" gems. Many of these eight places are accessible by high-speed rail, convenient for self-driving, and have low consumption. Crucially, they allow you to avoid the crowds, and the air is filled with a refreshing coolness. Everyone thinks summer is only for crowded beaches, but I beg to differ.
01 Baoji | Shaanxi
⏰ By 6:30 AM, you should be at the foot of Mount Taibai. Not because it's hard to climb, but because the mountain mist hasn't dispersed yet, the temperature is just over 20 degrees Celsius, and it feels comfortably unlike summer. Take the scenic shuttle bus to Honghuaping, then follow the hiking trail. Don't rush; a leisurely two to three hours will get you to the cable car station. There's really no need to join the "morning rush"; going an hour later will make you question your life choices due to the queues. After descending, head straight to the Famen Temple Buddhist Cultural Square. The afternoon light hitting the Heshi Pagoda is golden, and photos won't even need editing.
🍜 Don't eat noodles in the scenic area for lunch. Drive to Xinmin Street in town, and try Lao Hou's Gan Mian Pi; one bite of its sour and spicy flavor will invigorate you.
⚠️ Guanshan Grassland is suitable for the second day, but remember, mosquitoes start to appear after 4 PM on the grassland. Wearing long pants and long sleeves is the safest bet.
02 Yanbian | Jilin
Yanbian is truly comfortable in summer, with temperatures in the low twenties. The streets are filled with the aroma of kimchi and the sweet scent of ice-cold beer.
📍 The Liuding Mountain Cultural Tourism Zone is vast, but if you're not a Buddhist or don't need to see every hall, I recommend just walking the central axis. Enter through the mountain gate and slowly ascend the stone steps. The pine trees on both sides provide dense shade, and the breeze feels like a natural fan. Half a day is enough. Head down to Dunhua city center for lunch and find any cold noodle restaurant. That icy cold noodle will cool you from your throat to your stomach in one bite.
⚠️ The admission ticket is CNY 80. You can save a few yuan by booking online, but don't buy the sightseeing car ticket. The entire walk takes only 30 minutes, so spending that money is unnecessary.
03 Changji | Xinjiang
In late August, the wheat in Jiangbulake has just been harvested, the grass is still green, and the distant snow-capped peaks of Tianshan Mountains are set against a blue sky. Anyone who sees this scene will say, "It's worth it."
🚄 I recommend flying to Urumqi, then driving for about three hours. Wucaiwan is better to visit in the afternoon. ⏰ From 5 PM to 7 PM, the sunlight shines obliquely on the red, yellow, and brown hills, making the colors look like a lit-up oil painting. The light is soft at this time, so you don't have to avoid midday shadows when taking photos.
⚠️ You must go to Tianchi Lake in the morning. The wind is light, and the lake surface is as calm as a mirror. In the afternoon, when the wind picks up, the water surface becomes wrinkled, and all reflections disappear. The admission ticket plus shuttle bus is over CNY 100, which is worth it, provided you walk along the boardwalk to the Queen Mother of the West Temple. Not walking enough means you've come for nothing.
04 Taizhou | Zhejiang
Taizhou has been underestimated for too long, especially in summer. It's best to visit Mount Tiantai after rain and clear skies. On the section of the Shiliang Feipu waterfall, the sound of the water is so loud you have to lean in to talk. The air is full of negative oxygen ions; a walk there feels like a spa for your lungs.
📍 For Taizhou Fucheng Cultural Tourism Zone, I recommend entering from the East Gate and walking south along the city wall. On your left are green mountains, and on your right are ancient streets. ⏰ After 7 PM, you can access the city wall for free, with no crowds, so you can take photos for as long as you like.
🍜 Don't rush back to the hotel in the evening. Walk to the end of Ziyang Old Street. The razor clams at Laobian Restaurant are even cheaper than at the seafood market, only about CNY 30 for a portion.
⚠️ For those with a fear of heights, I advise taking the cable car up to Shenxianju's suspended walkway and just seeing the glass bridge. Don't force yourself to walk the entire length; you'll definitely regret it when your legs give out.
05 Guilin | Guangxi
Guilin isn't actually hot in summer, but it is genuinely crowded. If you want to avoid the crowds, 📍 Xingping Ancient Town is a good choice. Don't go to West Street; it's noisier than a wet market at night. In Xingping, find a large rock by the Li River, sit down, and admire the mountains from the CNY 20 banknote background. Chat with a few friends while enjoying the river breeze, and an afternoon will just fly by.
⏰ I recommend arriving at Reed Flute Cave before 10 AM. There are fewer people, and the lighting inside the cave is good. The stalactites look like an alien palace under the lights.
🍜 To watch the sunset at Longji Terraces, go to Jinkeng Dazhai. The bamboo rice at the foot of the mountain, with glutinous rice mixed with cured meat and taro, is filling.
⚠️ Don't go to Mount Yuntai. It's a new attraction in the area, the roads aren't finished, and there's really nothing to see. Going there is a complete waste of time.
06 Haixi | Qinghai
When many people think of going to the Northwest in summer, their first thought is Chaka Salt Lake, but there's really no need; a better alternative exists.
📍 Qarhan Salt Lake is dozens of times larger than Chaka, and there are so few people that you can hear your own heartbeat standing in the middle of the lake. The salt crust is hard, crunching underfoot.
⏰ I recommend visiting Emerald Lake in the evening. After 6 PM, the light hits the water obliquely, making the green water look like emeralds.
⚠️ The Kunlun Mountain Pass is at a very high altitude. Those with altitude sickness should not push themselves. Just pass by and look; don't hike.
🚄 To Golmud, you can take a train from Xining. You'll arrive after a night's sleep, saving money and hassle. The small train at Chaka Salt Lake costs CNY 60 for a one-way trip, which I genuinely don't recommend. Walking there only takes 15 minutes.
07 Fuzhou | Jiangxi
Going to Fuzhou in August is for one thing: escaping the summer heat.
📍 Dajueshan Rafting: If you come to Fuzhou in summer and don't go rafting once, it's like you came for nothing.
🎫 The rafting ticket is over CNY 200, but the entire trip lasts an hour and a half. The river has significant drops, water splashes everywhere, and screams don't stop from beginning to end.
⚠️ Note that there are only two rafting sessions: 10 AM and 2 PM. If you miss them, you'll have to wait until the next day. If you're not rafting, you can take the cable car up the mountain and climb to Dajueyan Temple. The vegetarian meal there is surprisingly delicious, light yet flavorful.
🚄 Take the high-speed train from Nanchang West; it's about 40 minutes, then a 30-minute taxi ride to the scenic area, which is easier than driving.
08 Harbin | Heilongjiang
Harbin in August and September sheds the winter cold and avoids the summer humidity, making it the perfect time for a lie-flat vacation.
📍 If you don't stay a night at Volga Manor, it's like you came for nothing. The Russian-style wooden houses and grasslands are even more beautiful than the pictures you see online.
🍜 The Madieer ice cream on Central Street still has its classic taste, CNY 5 a stick. Don't buy from street vendors.
⚠️ Harbin Ice and Snow World is closed in summer. Don't go there expecting ice and snow activities. The indoor ice and snow world ticket is ridiculously expensive and not worth it. Taking a few photos outside Saint Sophia Cathedral is enough; just go in for a quick look and come out; there's no need to buy a ticket.
⏰ The most comfortable time by the Songhua River in Harbin is between 8 PM and 9 PM. The river breeze is cooler than an air-conditioned room.
These eight places, any one of them, are better for escaping the heat and relaxing than being ripped off at popular tourist spots. Which ones have you visited? Or do you have better recommendations? Let's chat in the comments, I'd love to hear your thoughts 👂
