Visiting Tanzania and going on safaris at the beginning of May, right after the rainy season, comes with both advantages and disadvantages: · Fewer tourists · Lush, gorgeous landscapes · No crowding of vehicles all trying to photograph the same animal · High grass, making it harder to spot wildlife We explored Tarangire and Arusha National Parks with Samora Explorers. Our driver was incredibly dedicated and made every effort to help us see as many animals as possible. Personally, I’d choose the off-season every time over the high season because it’s much more pleasant to enjoy the parks without large crowds.

We arrived in Arusha in February and were immediately struck by how fresh and vibrant everything felt—lush green landscapes, clear skies, and a calm vibe that welcomed us warmly. Arusha National Park was our gentle introduction to safari life. It felt unhurried, with giraffes meandering across the fields, monkeys leaping through the trees, and Mount Meru standing quietly in the background. It was peaceful and effortlessly beautiful. In Tarangire, things became more vivid and thrilling. We watched massive elephant families cross the road right before us, surrounded by iconic baobab trees. That wild, classic African atmosphere we hoped for came alive, leaving us in awe as we kept asking, “Is this real?” Ngorongoro Crater was indescribable. Descending into it felt like stepping into nature’s grand stage, where every possible animal seemed gathered in one place. Lions resting, distant rhinos, and vast herds filled the scene. It was overwhelming yet serene at the same time. In Serengeti, we devoted most of our time and energy. Long drives through endless plains revealed natural rhythms of predators and herds. Some moments, we simply sat in silence, absorbing the pure, unfiltered wildlife around us—it was then that the enormity of the experience truly hit us. Lake Manyara offered something different—a quieter, greener, and slower pace. After Serengeti’s intensity, this calm and tranquil environment provided the perfect conclusion. We didn’t realize how much we needed that until we got there. Reflecting on it all, the trip wasn’t just about visiting parks; it was about immersing ourselves in nature’s rhythm, slowing down, and truly being present. Even the simplest moments, like sunrise drives or distant wildlife gazing, left lasting impressions long after we returned.

I traveled to Arusha for work and decided to bring my wife along to enjoy an extra couple of days exploring the area. On the first day, we visited Arusha National Park. Initially, there was some confusion about the entrance fee due to our status as Tanzanian residents, and we ended up paying more than expected. However, once that was resolved and we entered the park, the experience was unforgettable. The park offers a stunning variety of landscapes, including tropical rainforests, clearings, lakes, brooks, and savannahs. Mount Meru looms magnificently and can be seen from nearly everywhere in the park. Our package included a walking safari, and we got the chance to observe warthogs, buffaloes from afar, and giraffes up close. The safari led us to a tranquil waterfall, a perfect spot to relax. Later, we enjoyed lunch at a picturesque picnic location near Momella Lake, thanks to our guide, who brought packed meals. As we continued exploring the park, we saw more giraffes, zebras, baboons, and Colobus monkeys. Our guide, Mr. Jordan, was fluent in English and highly knowledgeable about the park’s flora, fauna, and local lore. We traveled in an open-top safari jeep, which provided great views throughout the trip. By late afternoon, we arrived at the hotel, Point Zone Resort, arranged as part of the package by the tour operator. Though we initially lost some time settling the payment issue at the entrance, the day in the park was an exceptional experience overall. On the second day, Mr. Jordan promptly arrived at the hotel as scheduled. Since we had an evening flight to catch, he planned the day efficiently. We managed to see the city sights, browse the markets, and visit the Cultural Heritage Centre, which became the highlight of the day. It was an incredible two-day visit to Arusha, and this was my second experience with Goanna Safaris. Just like the first time, it was thoroughly satisfying.

I visited Meru Waterfall with my wife and her friend, and we had an amazing time. The walk to the waterfall was pleasant, with beautiful green scenery and refreshing air all around. When we arrived, the view was stunning, and the tranquil atmosphere made the visit even more memorable. We took lots of great photos, soaked in the natural surroundings, and admired the serenity of the place. If you're in Arusha and enjoy nature, I highly recommend including Meru Waterfall in your plans—it's a perfect spot to relax and appreciate Tanzania's natural beauty.

Before coming to Tanzania, I had no idea there was a national park with no entrance fee. 🤔 Even more surprising, the only park in the country where you can step out of the vehicle and walk on safari is Arusha National Park. On the morning of Day 3, we departed from Arusha, and our first stop was here. The money saved on entrance fees was enough for two good meals. 💰 🎢 Contrast 1: Giraffes Everywhere Not long after entering the park, we encountered a group of over a dozen giraffes, with the 4,566-meter Mount Meru volcano as the backdrop. It’s Tanzania’s second-highest peak and even harder to climb than Kilimanjaro. The giraffes here are unafraid of humans, making it easy to take close-up photos. 🐵 Contrast 2: Black-and-White Colobus Monkeys These monkeys can only be found in Arusha National Park in all of Tanzania. With their striking black-and-white fur and tails longer than their bodies, they leap through the treetops as if flying. I didn’t see a single one during five days in Serengeti, but in Arusha, I spotted three groups within just half an hour. 🚣 Experience 3: Canoe Safari One of the rarest activities in Africa, the canoe safari lets you paddle across Momella Lake in a two-person boat. The water reflects the volcano, elephants drink at the shore, and flamingos fly overhead. This perspective is completely different from being in a safari vehicle—it feels like you’re part of the scenery. 🦩 🥾 Experience 4: Walking Safari The only place in Tanzania where this is allowed! This is the perfect place to relax after arriving in Arusha. The staff is amazing, and I would highly recommend it. The view of Mount Meru is absolutely stunning. We enjoyed delicious local foods and got a taste of the local culture. I will definitely return to this wonderful spot.

We were welcomed and assisted by an incredibly friendly and professional team, including Jonas, Lukas, Veronica, Obadia, James, and Zawadi. The meals, though simple, were delicious and skillfully prepared by chefs William and Innocent. The rooms were spacious, well-furnished, and spotless, with modern and roomy bathrooms. While we did encounter some Wi-Fi issues, the staff went above and beyond to fix them. This is our second visit, and it’s unlikely to be our last.

During my one-month stay in Arusha, I had several excursions with my local guide, Tyson. He consistently went above and beyond to ensure my stay was incredible and filled with unforgettable experiences. From hiking at the base of Mt. Meru to see waterfalls, to exploring local markets, and excursions to other cities or attractions, he was always there to support me and help overcome any challenges or language barriers. Even after our excursions, Tyson ensured I returned safely to my host family, often walking me home through rural areas. His expertise greatly enriched my experience, allowing me to learn so much about Tanzanian culture, language, as well as local flora and fauna—things I wouldn’t have discovered without him. Wherever we went, he explained local plants, their medicinal uses, and even knew their Latin names. I can confidently say Tyson played a key role in making my time in Tanzania one of the greatest experiences of my life. He wasn’t just a guide to me; he became a friend, sharing many wonderful memories during my stay.

To conclude our safari, we stayed one night at Wildlife Residence, which was a fitting end to a wonderful time in Tanzania. This charming boutique hotel is slightly secluded yet conveniently located for early morning departures to the nearby Kilimanjaro Airport. We were warmly welcomed and briefed by the manager, who, along with the entire staff, was exceptionally accommodating and committed to ensuring we had a pleasant stay. On the departure day, at 5 a.m., the manager personally brought us delicious hot coffee to our room, which we enjoyed on our terrace. The food was freshly prepared and tasted good. Before dinner, the manager offered a delightful evening walk, where we explored the surroundings and spotted various animals, including zebras, wildebeests, and both large and small antelopes. The breathtaking view of Mount Meru at dusk was unforgettable. The property is beautifully set in nature, peaceful, and features a small pool. Arusha Villa was our first stop in Tanzania, offering us a couple of nights to recover from our long flights before starting our safari. The villa is stunning and incredibly tranquil. Its spaciousness ensures it never feels crowded, providing ample opportunities for relaxation. The food was exceptional, made from locally sourced ingredients, making it perfect for unwinding, enjoying the serenity, and even spotting the occasional monkey.

The first stop of our honeymoon, we were absolutely delighted to stay at this establishment. A special mention goes to the exceptional quality of the ingredients and the cuisine—meals were truly outstanding! The pool, park, and various terraces are very pleasant, perfect for relaxing after a long flight and recharging for upcoming safaris. We spotted two types of monkeys playing in the trees and enjoyed a lovely view of Kilimanjaro from the back terrace. The deluxe room in the main building was very comfortable, the staff were charming, and we had an excellent stay!

4 Days Mount Meru Climbing Highlights A 4 days climb up Mount Meru is an excellent choice for trekkers looking to take their time to acclimate and enjoy the stunning scenery. Here’s a detailed itinerary for a 5-day trek: Day 1: Your mountain guide or one of representative will meet you at Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO) and escort you to your accommodations in Arusha. The drive from the airport to your hotel is about 45min. Pre-climbing Briefing At a specified time, your guide will gather you for the pre- climbing briefing that includes sharing all the necessary details and check all of your personal mountain gears. Going through the gears is very important as we have to make sure you are set for the trek and if you are missing something, your guide will organize it with the renting shops. Late Arrivals If your flight arrivals late or you are too tired to receive the pre- climbing briefing, your guide will still be there to make sure your gears are checked and the pre- briefing would be rescheduled the next morning. Note: Please note your accommodation for this night is not included in your package price but once you confirm your booking we will share different accommodation options and you will choose the option that works better for your budget. Day 2: After breakfast, your mountain crew will collect you from your hotel in Arusha and drive for about an hour to Momella Gate, where you will complete entry formalities. You will have hot lunch at the gate before you begin your climb. Today trek will be through the grassland then gradually into the rainforest where you will spot giraffe, zebra, colobus monkeys and great number of birdlife. You will arrive in Miriakamba in time for evening leisure, dinner and overnight. Distance: 10km Hiking Time: 4-6hrs Habitat: Montane Forest Accommodation: Miriakamba Hut (3 Meals) Day 3: After a hearty breakfast, your ascent to Saddle Hut begins. Today’s walk will be steeper than the earlier day but in a well-maintained path rolls up through the rainforest. Snacks will be served at elephant ridge with a great view of Meru Summit and Mt. Kilimanjaro on the other side. After a short rest, you continue to Saddle Hut (3570m), on a wide col amid the slopes of Meru and Little Meru. At Saddle Hut, you will have hot lunch followed by a short acclimatization trek to the summit of Little Meru (3,820m) that offers superb views of Meru’s summit, the crater and at the top of the ash cone you will see Kilimanjaro towering in a distance. Later on, return to Saddle hut for early dinner ready for summit day! Distance: 8km Hiking Time: 3-5hrs Accommodation: Saddle Hut (3 Meals) Day 4: At 2am you will wake up for quick snacks before you start your final climb steeply to Rhino point (3800m) and furthermore to Cobra Point (4350m). We reach the summit (4,566m) on time for sunrise with unlimited possibilities of seeing Kilimanjaro Peak above the clouds. If the weather permits, you will also have spectacular view

What a stunning place. We stayed in a cottage by the river, and it was absolutely lovely. The staff were incredibly friendly and accommodating. Dinner was a set three-course meal that was delicious, and the breakfast buffet had plenty of options to choose from.

It’s always a delight staying at Mtoni; it has truly become my home away from home whenever I’m in Arusha. Tom, Neema, and their entire team are warm, attentive, and incredibly supportive. The lodge is stunning, an oasis perfectly positioned between KIA and Arusha’s town center. It feels secluded and tranquil, yet it’s just a short distance from the city. From the moment we were picked up at Kilimanjaro Airport, we couldn’t have asked for a better experience. Our safari journey took us through Arusha National Park, Tarangire National Park, the Serengeti, and finally the Ngorongoro Crater. Each destination was unique, showcasing spectacular landscapes and terrain, and absolutely worth visiting. While there was a lot of traveling, including some very bumpy roads and plenty of dust, it all added to the adventure, and we had an amazing time. We were lucky enough to spot four of the Big Five, though leopards proved elusive. However, seeing a cheetah more than made up for their absence. All of our accommodations throughout the week were excellent. It was wonderful to return each evening to comfortable rooms, delicious meals, and a chance to unwind after a day of exploring. The true highlight of our trip was our guide, Lameck. Every morning, our jeep was spotless and ready for the day ahead, and he always arrived on time. More importantly, his incredible knowledge, genuine kindness, and fantastic sense of humor made every day memorable. We laughed so much during the week, and by the end of the trip, we’d gained a lifelong friend. Thank you for an unforgettable safari experience—we couldn’t recommend it more highly!

We spent two nights at Olerai Lodge before starting our safari and had an absolutely wonderful time. Exploring the vibrant grounds and unwinding in our beautiful room was the ideal way to begin our Tanzanian adventure. Located on a coffee plantation, the property offers opportunities to spot monkeys throughout. The food was among the best we experienced on our whole trip, and they ensure you’re well-fed! Our safari with Bright African Safaris was absolutely flawless! The entire trip flowed seamlessly, and we truly cherished our time with our guide, Hamisi. Not only was he an outstanding guide—with an impressive depth of knowledge—and a skilled driver, but he was also a fantastic conversationalist. We spent 2 nights in Tarangire NP, 2 nights at Ngorongoro Crater, and 4 nights in the Central Serengeti, which was the perfect duration. This allowed us time to linger at wildlife sightings, unlike shorter 4-day safari schedules. We even enjoyed an afternoon break to relax by the pool. Since we visited in mid-June, we took a full day in the Western Corridor and witnessed incredible herds of migrating wildebeest and zebra—it was breathtaking! During that outing, we even had a bush lunch under a shaded tree, surrounded by wildebeest. The jeep was in excellent condition and very comfortable. Salim, our travel planner, listened carefully to our needs, promptly answered all my questions, and adjusted plans whenever necessary. Our stay at Mtoni River Lodge was truly wonderful. The atmosphere was so calm and peaceful, with only the gentle sounds of birds and nature surrounding us.
