Asuka travel guide and discussion

We traveled to Japan in the spring to admire the cherry blossoms, but unexpectedly ended up enjoying a strawberry feast as well. We initially bought some at a supermarket, and they were incredibly delicious, sweet, and fragrant. Then I read about a unique experience: picking and eating them straight from the vine. How do you find a farm like this? You can easily search for "strawberry farm" on Trip.com or Google Maps and pick one that suits you. However, I highly recommend booking a guided tour that combines strawberry picking with sightseeing—a perfect blend of tasty and educational! For instance, our tour from Osaka covered three amazing spots: · strawberry picking · the Buddhist temple Tsubosaka-dera (which is tricky to reach via public transport) · Mount Yoshino, home to 30,000 blooming cherry trees Our first stop was the strawberry farm. We were dropped off at a massive greenhouse, handed scissors and a small bag for the stems, and given 30 minutes. "Wait, don't we need to wash them?!" we asked. "No need, they're perfectly clean!" We wandered down the rows, happily sampling fragrant berries of various varieties. Have you ever entered a speed-eating contest? By the time we were completely stuffed, we realized only 15 minutes had passed! We could have headed back to the bus, but I love strawberries way too much to pass up the joy of roaming the rows and hunting for the biggest, ripest ones) The next stop was Tsubosaka-dera, one of Japan's most picturesque temples. The moment I saw a photo of the great seated Buddha immersed in a sea of blooming cherry blossoms, I knew we absolutely had to go! There's a local bus from the train station, but it runs sparingly—only once an hour. So taking a tour bus turned out to be the perfect solution. We were given an hour to explore. What makes this temple truly unique is its striking blend of Japanese and Indian architectural styles. Founded around 717 AD, it features several Indian-style Buddha statues, a Taj Mahal-inspired sanctuary, and white stone bas-reliefs; all this was gifted by India as a token of gratitude for the temple’s historic work in aiding leprosy patients. It is also renowned as a temple of healing. Legend has it that a local shaman unearthed a buried statue of Senju Kannon (the Thousand-Armed Goddess of Mercy), which granted him healing powers. After he cured the empress of an eye disease, she constructed the temple to express her gratitude. It is believed that the Senju Kannon, enshrined in the Octagonal Hall, continues to cure eye ailments to this day. We even spotted eyeglasses and cases left behind by visitors. I sincerely hope those people simply don't need them anymore. The third stop on our itinerary was the sacred Mount Yoshino. We were allotted two hours here, which was tragically nowhere near enough! Some folks missed the temple's fire ceremony, while others didn't have time to hike further up to catch the cherry blossoms in full bloom, as the trees at the lower elevations had already shed their petals. The rush is due to Japan's strict labor laws regarding drivers' working hours. Because of this, my top tip is to grab your belongings from the bus right away, give your guide a heads-up, and just stay behind to hike the mountain at your own pace, especially since it's beautifully illuminated in the evening. And trust me, there's plenty to see. The area is packed with ancient shrines and temples dating back over a thousand years. Come spring, many of them offer breathtaking views of the sakura. It's said that back in 1594, the legendary warlord Toyotomi Hideyoshi and his 5,000-strong entourage stayed at Yoshimizu-jinja Shrine just for hanami (cherry blossom viewing). Wishing you a fantastic trip to beautiful Japan!

Yakushiji Temple, with a history spanning 1,300 years, was built by Emperor Tenmu to pray for the recovery of his wife (later Empress Chito) from illness. The Yakushi Trilogy of amulets is the main collection that has remained since the temple's founding and is considered one of the most beautiful Buddha images in the world. The gentle smiles of these amulets evoke a sense of security, making visitors feel as if they are in the embrace of the Buddha. We invite everyone to visit Yakushiji Temple, a temple of the heart, where you can relax and cultivate your mind and spirit. The ritual of "resolving bad luck" at Yakushiji Temple in Nara, Japan, involves worshipping Yakushi Nyorai, the Buddha of healing, to ward off negativity and pray for good health. This temple, with a history dating back to 680 AD, is believed to heal both physical and mental ailments. #badluckresolvingplace #yakushiji #Yakushijitemple #nara #temple #japan

Kofukuji Temple This ancient temple dates back to the 7th century and is one of the Seven Major Ancient Temples of Nara. It used to be the family temple of the Fujiwara family, one of Japan's most influential families. It is notable for its five-story wooden pagoda and the National Treasure Museum, which exhibits exquisite Buddhist art. The atmosphere is quiet and it is near Nara Deer Park. 📍 Nara City, Japan 🚆 From JR Nara Station, take the Nara Loop Bus No. 2 and get off at the Kenchō-mae stop. #OsakaTravel

#KinkiTourism The seventh temple of the 33 Saigoku Temples Okadera Japan's first sacred place for warding off evil Long ago, the temple was called Tokozan Shinjuin Ryugai-ji, but it was affectionately called "Okadera" because it was "a temple on the hill of Asuka", and eventually its official name became Okadera Despite being an ancient temple in the ancient city of Nara, it is an active temple with a wonderful flower water fountain and events, and is proactive in posting on social media The photos are also very beautiful, so please take a look It is also famous for its flowers such as dahlias and hydrangeas A very gorgeous temple that is well maintained Okadera has a lot to see It's quite high on my list of favorite temples!! 📌Okadera Temple 〒634-0111 806 Oka, Asukamura, Takaichigun, Nara Entry times 8:30-17:00 (December-February 8:30-16:30) Entry fees Individuals, groups (50 or more people) General (university students and above) 400 yen, 320 yen High school students 300 yen, 240 yen Middle school students 200 yen, 160 yen *Children under elementary school age can enter for free ⚠︎There is a parking lot, but the road leading to it is very narrow Alternate traffic is also difficult If you are not confident in your driving or during the crowded season, it is safer to use the nearby private parking lots ꒰ঌ┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈໒꒱ Thank you for reading to the end Like! "Okadera" Today, we will introduce Okadera, a flower temple famous for its dahlias😊💐 The oldest Kannon temple in Japan, the Saigoku Thirty-Three Kannon Pilgrimage, is holding a hydrangea tour project called "Yamato Three Great Kannon Hydrangea Corridor" at the three temples of Okadera, Hasedera, and Tsubosakadera, which are Nara Prefecture temples.☺️💠💐 Each temple has put in a lot of effort to display colorful and vibrant hydrangeas, but Okadera is even more gorgeous with not only hydrangeas but also dahlias! It is recommended to visit both Hasedera and Tsubosakadera together, so that you can appreciate the beauty of each display. 🤗✨💠💐Hydrangea Corridor at Okadera💐💠🗓Saturday, May 25, 2024 - Sunday, July 7, 2024📍806 Oka, Asuka-mura, Takaichi-gun, Nara Prefecture⏰8:30-17:00🚃Get off at Okadera-mae from the East Exit of Kashihara-Jingu-mae Station, 10 minutes walkGet off at Okadera-mae from Asuka Station, 10 minutes walk. 💰Adults 400 yen, university students 400 yen, high school students 300 yen, junior high school students 200 yen #NaraTourism #NaraHydrangea #HydrangeaSpot #HydrangeaCorridor #Okadera #HydrangeaTemple #FlowerTemple #KinkiTourism

#KinkiTourism The other day, I went to Okadera to see the hydrangeas. I was looking around for what to have for lunch and discovered My favorite chicken rice.ᐟ.ᐟ I had been wanting to eat it for a long time Coffee Stroll A beautifully renovated old house Perhaps it was just the right time of year because all the windows were open It was a very bright and pleasant space The Hainanese chicken rice I was looking forward to was so tender that it crumbled easily, yet was moist and delicious! The chili sauce is also delicious and you'll finish it in no time lol As the name of the shop suggests, you can choose your coffee after the meal from a selection of carefully selected beans After discussing whether or not the coffee was too sour, we decided on a coffee that was easy to drink but had a rich flavor Right near Okadera-san Also, if you're sightseeing in Asuka, be sure to stop by 📌Coffee Stamp 〒634-0111 55-4 Oka, Asuka-mura, Takaichi-gun, Nara Prefecture OPEN 11:00-17:00 (last call 16:00) Closed Thursdays and Fridays ⚠︎As of June 2024, last orders on Saturdays are at 15:00 For more information, please check the official blog Parking There are about 5 in front of the post office on the east side ✯ I was full that day so I couldn't eat it, but I have a feeling the desserts will be delicious too❤︎ Not only for lunch but also as a cafe ꒰ঌ┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈໒꒱ Thank you for reading to the end Like! Nara Prefecture is where the Ritsuryo system began in ancient Japan. People have gathered here since ancient times, and it seems that it has given birth to many influential people, as there are many ancient tombs here. I watch the sunset from one of these, Takamatsuzuka Tomb. And so a day in Asuka comes to an end. I wonder if people 1,300 years ago were also watching sunsets like this.

Kofuku-ji Temple is actually a complex of Budist temples and pagodas. It's an exact replica of the original pagoda that Empress Komyo built here in AD 730, which burned to the ground. It is one of the most important religious and historical building in Nara nowadays. It is so convenient that this site was walking distance from the metro station, and also it is close to other places of interest. The huge pagoda will be easy to spot from a distance. The recommended sightseeing time is between one to two hours. The price of admission is quite cheap, I totally recommend this place to visit with your friends or even children. Entrance fee is not expensive at all and it is good value for the money. Totally worthy. #createwithtrip #japan #holidays #exploring #createwithtrip

Nara's newly designated World Heritage site, "Archaeological Sites of Asuka-Fujiwara: Capitals of Ancient Japan and Related Properties," was added this July and includes over 20 locations across Sakurai, Kashihara, and Asuka. 🚲 There is a bike rental shop right outside Asuka Station. I highly recommend an electric bike, otherwise, you'll need the strength of a triathlete to handle the hills here. The rental shop is open from 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM. No deposit is required, and a standard bike costs just ¥900 for the day. 🚲 A 5-minute ride from the station brings you to: 📍 Takamatsuzuka Tomb. This is a mural tomb, though you can only see the exterior. You can view the murals at the small museum next door. Admission is ¥300. Continue riding for another 15 minutes to: 📍 Kitora Tomb and Shijin-kan Museum. Featuring ancient murals and the four mythical beasts, the museum here is free to visit. You can only see the exterior of the tomb itself. The next stop is a 30-minute ride away, with plenty of other ruins along the way where you can stop and take photos. 📍 Ishibutai Tomb. Get up close to this megalithic tomb from the Asuka period. This is my top recommendation. Admission is ¥500, and you can go inside to see the structure of the tomb. I've visited the other World Heritage sites on separate trips. If you're interested, you can search for "Asuka" in my posts.

If you're traveling along Miyazaki’s scenic Nichinan Coast, Udo Jingu Shrine is an absolute must-see. This shrine boasts a truly unique location, with its main hall nestled inside a massive cave on a cliff overlooking the Pacific Ocean. The contrast between the brilliant vermilion shrine and the deep blue sea is breathtaking, making the walk to the shrine just as enjoyable as the visit itself. ✨ ⛩️ Inside the Cave Sanctuary The main hall of Udo Jingu is located inside a sea cave (rock house) at the bottom of a steep flight of stairs. Stepping out of the bright sunlight into the quiet, mysterious atmosphere of the cave is a surreal experience. Known as a "Kudari-miya" (a shrine where you descend to enter), the path leading down to the main hall is one of its most striking features. 🌊 Coastal Scenery The path offers panoramic views of the Pacific, where you can watch the powerful waves crash against the jagged rocks. It’s not just a spiritual visit; it’s a beautiful coastal hike that showcases the best of the Nichinan Coast. 👋 Try Your Luck with "Undama" Tossing Udo Jingu is famous for "Undama-nage" (Lucky Ball Tossing). You take small, unglazed clay balls called "Undama" and try to throw them into a small hollow on the "Turtle Rock" at the base of the cliff. Tradition says men should throw with their right hand and women with their left. It’s surprisingly competitive and fun trying to land one in the target! 😊 🌈 A Magical Rainbow Surprise! During my visit, a massive rainbow appeared over the ocean. 🌈 Seeing the cliffside cave, the vermilion shrine, and the rainbow all at once was a truly unforgettable sight. These unexpected moments are what make traveling so special. 👟 Wear Comfortable Shoes There are plenty of stairs and stone paths, so I highly recommend wearing sneakers or comfortable walking shoes. It’s about a 10-15 minute walk from the parking lot, so give yourself plenty of time to explore at a relaxed pace. It’s the perfect pit stop for any Nichinan Coast road trip! 😊 📍 Udo Jingu Address: 3232 Miyaura, Nichinan City, Miyazaki Prefecture Hours: 6:00 AM – 6:00 PM (Apr–Sep) / 7:00 AM – 5:00 PM (Oct–Mar) Parking: Available (Free) *Note: Hours may change, so please check the official website before visiting.

A Journey to the World Heritage Sites of Asuka Village I managed to pull it off as a day trip with Jetstar.

Gangoji is located in the Naramachi district of Nara City. As a prominent ancient temple of the Nara period, it is part of the "Historic Monuments of Ancient Nara" UNESCO World Heritage site. Its roots trace back to Hokoji (Asuka-dera) in the Asuka period. After the capital was moved to Heijo-kyo, it became Gangoji, serving as a pivotal institution in the history of Japanese Buddhism. 🏯 Key Highlights · Gokuraku-bo Main Hall: The most iconic structure of Gangoji, with surviving sections that preserve architecture from the Nara period. · Zen Room: Connected to the Main Hall, this is a significant remnant of ancient temple construction. · Ancient Roof Tiles: The roof is adorned with extremely old tiles, some of which are believed to date back to the Asuka period, giving them immense historical value. · Site of the Miniature Five-Story Pagoda: The temple was once much larger than it is today, serving as a major Buddhist center during the Nara period. · Naramachi: Gangoji is surrounded by the traditional Naramachi district, allowing visitors to explore the temple alongside historic streets and Machiya townhouses. One particularly interesting thing about Gangoji is its direct historical lineage from Asuka-dera: Asuka-dera (Hokoji) → Relocation to Heijo-kyo → Gangoji If Horyuji represents the peak of Asuka-period Buddhist architecture, then Gangoji can be seen as the historical witness to the continuation of Asuka Buddhism into the Nara period. ⚠️ I visited in 2023 when Nara was celebrating the 25th anniversary of six temples and shrines being designated as World Heritage sites. They issued a joint pass for Toshodai-ji, Yakushi-ji, Kasuga Taisha, Todai-ji, Gangoji, and Kofuku-ji, which came with some small gifts. The temples provided beautifully designed Sange (flower petal-shaped cards). At Kasuga Taisha, you could choose two out of four small gifts, including postcards, oil-blotting papers, and mini-folders. As for why Horyuji wasn't included—it's because they had already celebrated their 30th anniversary! 😜

When I travel, I make it a point to eat local specialties as much as possible. Plus, I want to enjoy them in a place with a great atmosphere! Being someone who is quite particular about food, here are the spots I visited in Nara that I’d love to share with you♪ 🦌 Horiuchi Fruit Farm, Nara Sanjo Store I fell in love with their fruit sandwich the moment I saw it in a guidebook. Finding one with figs is so rare! The figs were sweet and incredibly soft. I was in total bliss while biting into that luxurious fruit sandwich... 🩷 🦌 Yumeichi Chaya (Asuka Village) As soon as you head up to the restaurant on the second floor, you’re instantly soothed by the rustic atmosphere. The lunch I was looking forward to featured red rice that was perfectly chewy and amazing! The home-style side dishes had a comforting, delicious taste. Also, I had already decided on the melon parfait from the shop downstairs before I even arrived! Apparently, they use melons grown right there in Asuka Village. Since you can’t eat it inside the restaurant, I savored it outside while soaking up the heat. 🦌 Nordic Goods & Naramachi Cafe moi Exhausted from walking around Naramachi, I practically stumbled into this Nordic lifestyle shop. The cafe space is tiny, with only one or two tables, but you can feel the owner’s attention to detail in every single piece, from the tableware to the coasters—it’s just lovely♡ The "Hojicha Ice Cream + Jelly" I ordered was refreshing and delicious. The shaved ice used syrup that clearly seemed to be made from real melons! Even the extra syrup came in a tiny, adorable container 🩷 🦌 Kanakana This is a machiya (traditional townhouse) cafe I’d been dreaming of visiting since I first saw it in a guidebook. Just looking at the exterior got me so excited! As expected, it was crowded for Sunday lunch, so I put my name down and waited a bit, but my turn came surprisingly soon. Once inside, the space felt so open and airy! I thought it might have a formal atmosphere because it’s so famous, but the staff were warm and welcoming, which put me at ease 😊. The food was wonderful too! Everything from the plates to the stamp on the chopstick sleeves was just perfect 🩷. The agar jelly dessert was so cute that I even ended up ordering the walnut cake! The herb tea was lovely as well. I’d definitely want to stop by again when I come to Nara. However, this area is a bit of a trek, so I recommend taking a bus or a taxi. Just be sure to check the bus schedule, as they don’t run very often! You really should set aside plenty of time to explore Naramachi thoroughly!

#slowtraveling Below are posts 91–100, the final set of the #slowtraveling series. Each is anchored to one named destination, 250+ words, English, titled, with transit (line/station/fare), cash vs IC, etiquette, a personal timing mistake, and a closing question. No URLs or phone numbers. 91. Asuka’s Japan’s Oldest Great Buddha Pilgrimage Asuka-dera (Asuka Village, Nara) houses the Gangō-ji Gokokuji Shaka Nyorai, cast in 609 AD—Japan’s oldest surviving Great Buddha at 2.75m, 200 years before Nara’s Daibutsu. From Kintetsu Asuka Station (Yoshino Line, ~640 yen IC from Kintetsu Nara via Kashiharajingu-mae), walk 15 min north on the pencil lane. Open 9:00–17:00, 300 yen cash adult, shoe-off at genkan, honden 5-yen offering, two bows two claps one bow. I went 8:40 a.m. weekday: rented e-bike 1,500 cash at 8:45 (post 75 logic), rode to Asuka-dera at 8:55, paid 300 cash just as the gate opened. Inside: the 1,400-year copper Shaka, the original Yakushi and Amida from 706, and the three-story pagoda base. Sat on the temple bench 20 min—no tour bus, just the bell. A 130-yen vending hojicha (IC) from the Asuka Lawsons after. By 10:30 the school group arrived; at 8:55 the Buddha was the 7th century’s own silence. 45 min, 1,930 yen. IC train, cash bike + temple. Etiquette: temple = shoe-off (socks), 5-yen, two bows two claps one bow, the 609 AD copper is 1,400 years—no flash, the pencil lane is private farmland—stay on it, no drone (village ban). Mistake: 13:00 November—Asuka-dera a file, the honden a queue. 8:40 weekday, bell-ring, is Asuka’s own Buddha hour. Question: when Japan’s oldest Buddha sits in a village with no fence and a 300-yen gate, is the pilgrimage the history or the humility? 92. Dorogawa Onsen’s Hanaya Tokubei Local Cuisine Hanaya Tokubei (Dorogawa Onsen, Tenkawa, Nara) is the 1902 ryokan on the main lane, 3-min walk from the Kawayu bridge. From Shimoichi-guchi (Kintetsu, ~1,150 yen IC from Osaka Abenobashi) take the Nara Kotsu bus to Dorogawa (~1,150 yen IC/cash, last bus ~17:30). Lunch 11:30–14:00, reservation required for non-guests (call ahead), 2,500–3,500 yen cash for the full kaiseki (local amago trout, wild veg, tofu). Day-use bath separate 800 yen cash. I went 11:20 a.m. weekday: bus from Shimoichi-guchi 9:40, Dorogawa 10:50, walked the riverside (post 67) then to Hanaya Tokubei at 11:25—first lunch seating, reservation shown. Paid 3,000 cash for the trout kaiseki: grilled amago, mountain fern, tofu skin, pickles, rice. Ate in the 1902 dining room looking at the cedar wall. A 130-yen vending apple soda (IC) from the bus-stop kiosk after. By 12:30 the day-trippers filled the bath; at 11:25 the ryokan was the onsen’s own table hour. 2 hrs, ~3,130 yen. IC train+bus, cash-only at Tokubei. Etiquette: ryokan lunch = shoe-off slippers, don’t pour your own sake (staff does), the cedar wall is 1902—no touch, day-use bath 800 cash—towel rental extra, the lane is 1.5m—no roller bag. Mistake: 13:00 weekend—lunch full, no reservation turned away. 11:20 weekday, trout-grill, is Dorogawa’s own forest hour. Question: when a 1902 onsen ryokan serves 3,000-yen mountain kaiseki to people who rode a 1,150-yen bus for 70 minutes, is the meal the reward or the ransom? 93. Yatsuo’s Sloping Street Cinematic Empty Frame Yatsuo’s “cinematic frame” is the 600m Suwamachi slope viewed from the bottom looking up—the 19th-c plaster ochre walls, the 92 cedar steps, the telegraph poles, all compressed into one vertical. From JR Etchū-Yatsuo (~20 min from Toyama, ~330 yen IC), 15-min walk up. Free, 24h. The frame works 6:30–7:15 a.m. May–June (lateral wash) or 7:00–7:45 Jan–Feb (blue hour). No tripod—beanbag on the lower step. I went 6:25 a.m. May weekday (post 28/65 logic): off the 6:02, walked to the bottom of Suwamachi at 6:35, sat on the lowest step with a beanbag, framed the slope—the cedar steps repeated up, the ochre walls graded lighter, one shutter half-open at the top. A 130-yen vending black coffee (IC) from the station Lawsons. Shot 12 frames by 7:05, packed up before the first delivery dolly. The frame is the town as one image—no people, no sign, just the 19th century holding its breath. 45 min, 130 yen. IC train, IC vending. Etiquette: Owara = elegiac—no flash, the cobble is 19th-c—beanbag not tripod, don’t photograph a resident’s genkan as “prop”, Suwa shrine gate at the top = two bows two claps one bow if you climb. Mistake: 9 a.m. any day—shadow gone, the slope a delivery track. 6:25 May, lateral-wash, is Yatsuo’s own frame hour. Question: when the best photograph of a town is the one that erases everyone who lives there, is the image the record or the erasure? 94. Imaicho’s Edo Storehouse Wall Pattern Walk Imaicho (Kashihara, Nara) preserves 48 Edo storehouses with white plaster namako walls and black-tile gables. From Kintetsu Yagi-Nishiguchi 7-min walk (~470 yen IC from Kintetsu Nara). The “pattern walk” is the 600m grid between Tsuneoka Shoyu (post 73) and Kawai Sake (post 22): the wall textures—namako diamond, kote-e plaster relief, the 19th-c roof tiles, the 1700s merchant doorframes. Free, 24h outer. I went 8:50 a.m. weekday: Yagi-Nishiguchi → Imai grid, walked the wall lane before Tsuneoka opened at 9:00. Stopped at 11 storehouses—one with a kote-e wave pattern, one with a repaired namako crack from 1927, one with the original 1780 door hinge. A 130-yen vending hojicha (IC) from the station side. By 10:30 the brewery tour groups started; at 8:50 the walls were the Edo grid’s own skin hour. 60 min, 130 yen. IC train, IC vending. Etiquette: Imaicho = the grid is residential—don’t enter a storehouse driveway, the namako wall is 19th-c plaster—don’t finger-rub, the kote-e relief is art—don’t lean a tripod on it, no drone. Mistake: 14:00 Sunday—walls a tour-guide lecture, the lane a file. 8:50 weekday, plaster-shadow, is Imaicho’s own Edo hour. Question: when a town’s most beautiful thing is the outside of buildings you can’t enter, is the walk the tour or the tease? 95. Karuizawa’s Missionary Chapel Woodland Wedding Lane Karuizawa’s “Missionary Chapel” refers to the cluster on the old Ginza lane—the St. Paul’s Catholic Church (1938, red-brick, 9:00–16:00, free outer, no interior without mass) and the Karuizawa Union Church (1936, wooden, similar hours). From Naka-Karuizawa (Shinano Railway, ~2,100 yen IC from Ueno) 15-min walk up the tree-lined lane. The “wedding lane” is the 400m between the two chapels—Meiji villas, linden shade, the 1900s summer-retreat seam. I went 8:55 a.m. weekday: Naka-Karuizawa → Ginza-dori 9:05, first to the St. Paul’s gate, photographed the red brick from the lane (no interior, no mass). Walked to Union Church 9:20—wooden facade, the 1936 bell silent. A 130-yen vending coffee (IC) from the station kiosk, eaten on the linden bench. By 10:30 the first wedding party arrived for a 11:00 ceremony; at 8:55 the lane was the missionary’s own prayer hour. 50 min, 130 yen. IC train, IC vending. Etiquette: chapel = two palms no clap (Christian), the red brick is 1938—no lean, the lane is 2m—no roller bag, the wedding parties have right-of-way—step aside, no drone. Mistake: 11:30 Saturday—lane a petal-strew, the chapels closed for private ceremony. 8:55 weekday, linden-shadow, is Karuizawa’s own mission hour. Question: when a 1938 red-brick chapel on a summer-retreat lane charges nothing and opens only for mass, is the silence the worship or the wait?

#slowtraveling Kintetsu Asuka Station (Yoshino Line, ~640 yen IC from Kintetsu Nara via Kashiharajingu-mae): rental cycle at station exit, standard 900–1,200 yen / e-assist 1,500–1,700 yen cash, 9:00–17:00. The loop (clockwise): station → Ishibutai (15 min flat south) → Sakafune-ishi (bike-lock + 200m walk) → Amakashi-no-oka (view) → Asukadera (north) → back via Kameishi field path, ~12km, 3–4 hrs with stops. I went 8:40 a.m. weekday: rented e-bike 1,500 cash at 8:45, rode out by 8:55. Ishibutai chamber alone at 9:10 (cool, no tour bus), Sakafune-ishi 9:40, Amakashi overlook 10:15 (no one), Asukadera 11:00 (post 23 logic). A 180-yen onigiri (IC) at Asuka Lawsons, a 130-yen vending tea. The e-bike ate the 12% grade near Takamatsuzuka; a standard bike would’ve walked it. Back by 12:30, returned bike 12:45. 4 hrs, 1,680 yen. IC train, cash bike. Etiquette: farmland = stay on the pencil lanes (private fields either side), the Ishibutai chamber is 7th-c stone—no flash, Sakafune-ishi is 200m walk-only (bikes locked at the rack), no drone (village ban), the e-bike battery does ~30km—don’t race it dry. Mistake: 13:00 November—Ishibutai a school file, the chamber a queue. 8:40 weekday, kofun-shadow, is Asuka’s own pedal hour. Question: when a village rents you a 1,500-yen e-bike to thread 1,400-year kofun between rice paddies, is the loop the tour or the lease on the past?

#slowtraveling Asuka’s loop: Ishibutai (7th c. stone chamber, free, no fence) → Sakafuneishi (stone wine-press, free) → Kame Bus from Asuka Station (~22 min, 290 yen IC/cash, hourly) or bike 1,500 yen cash/day. The “megalith” pins: Ishibutai’s 77m chamber, Sakafuneishi’s 7m boat-shaped hollow, Amakashi-no-oka’s 360 view. All free, 24h outer. I went 8:40 a.m. weekday: Asuka Station → bike 1,500 cash, rode the loop 8:50–11:30—Ishibutai at 9:00 (alone inside the chamber), Sakafuneishi at 10:00 (touch the hollow), Amakashi at 10:45 (empty overlook). A 180-yen onigiri (IC) at Lawsons, a 130-yen vending tea. The loop is the 1,400-year country—no ticket, no signage, just the stones. 3 hours, 1,810 yen. IC train+bus, cash bike. Etiquette: megalith = don’t chalk-rub the stone, Ishibutai chamber is 1,400 years—no flash, the farmland is private—stay on the pencil line, no drone (village ban). Mistake: 13:00 November—Ishibutai a tour-file, the chamber a queue. 8:40 weekday, chamber-empty, is Asuka’s own stone hour. Question: when a village puts its 7th-century stones in open fields with no fence and no ticket, is the access the gift or the risk?

#slowtraveling Yururiya is a 6-room guesthouse 400m off Kintetsu Asuka Station (from Yoshino Line transfer at Kashiharajingu-mae, ~560 yen IC from Kintetsu Nara), check-in 15:00, bike-loan 500 yen/day cash, breakfast 800 cash (veg-miso, local). The “farmland loop” is the 5km figure-eight the host marks on paper: guesthouse → Amakashi-no-oka → Sakafuneishi → back lanes to Ishibutai → return via the kofun-edge path. No ticket, no signage, the loop is a pencil line. I stayed overnight mid-May: checked in 15:20, left the pack, walked the loop 16:00–18:10 with the host’s map—Amakashi overlook empty at 16:20 (the tour buses gone), Sakafuneishi (the stone wine-press, free, no fence) alone, Ishibutai chamber at 17:00 with one other person. Bought a 180-yen konbini onigiri (IC) at Asuka Station Lawsons for the Amakashi bench. Dinner at Yururiya 800 cash, slept to cicadas. Morning 6:40 walked the loop’s east half again—dew on the kofun grass, the 7th c. under my shoes. IC train, cash guesthouse/bike. Etiquette: guesthouse = slippers in, shoes off at genkan, the host’s map is hand-drawn—don’t ask for GPS, the farmland is private—stay on the pencil line, no drone over kofun (Asuka village ban). Mistake: day-trippers who roll in 11 a.m. see the loop as a 3-site checklist; the 6:40 version is a different contract. 16:00 + 6:40 twin walks, is Yururiya’s own overnight hour. Question: when a guesthouse loans you a pencil-loop through 1,400-year-old farmland, is the stay the lodging or the key?

#slowtraveling Asukadera (Hōkō-ji, founded 596, houses the 609 Asuka Daibutsu—oldest Buddha statue in Japan) sits 15 min bike or 40 min walk north of Kintetsu Asuka Station; or Kame Loop Bus from Kashiharajingu-mae to “Asuka Daibutsu-mae” (~22 min, 290 yen IC/cash, hourly). Temple 500 yen adult cash (Apr–Sep 9–17:30, Oct–Mar 9–17), grounds include the original temple footprint stones and a quiet karesansui side garden. I went 8:35 a.m. weekday: rented e-bike at Asuka Station (1,500 yen cash, 9:00 open—arrived 8:40, waited 20 min, worth it), rode the country grid north, parked at the temple bike rack by 9:05, paid 500 cash at the gate before the 9:00 technically-open-but-still-unlocking moment. Walked the approach path—gravel between rice paddies, the 596 foundation stones on the left, then the honden with the 609 bronze sitting 2.7m tall, photographed legally (Asukadera allows it, unusual). Sat 25 min on the west veranda, no other visitor. Ishibutai tomb 10 min further by bike. IC train+bus, 500 cash gate, cash bike. Etiquette: Buddhist two-palms-no-clap, shoes off at honden step (socks), don’t circle behind the Daibutsu (priest’s side), the paddy path is farm—no shortcut, the Kame Loop is hourly—miss 10:22 and you wait till 11:22. Mistake: I once came 13:00 November—bus group of 30 filled the veranda, the 609 face a backdrop. 9:05 weekday, paddy mist, is Asuka’s own 7th-century hour. Question: when the oldest Buddha in Japan is 2.7m of 609 bronze in a village with no city wall, is the statue the capital or the survivor?

#slowtraveling Asuka was Japan’s cradle (6th–7th c) before Nara—scattered kofun, Ishibutai’s 75-ton capstone, Sakafuneishi, rice paddies. Kintetsu from Kintetsu Nara to Asuka Station (~45 min, ~560 yen IC with transfer at Kashiharajingu-mae), bike rental at the station 900 yen standard / 1,500 e-assist (9–17, ~200 yen one-way drop at Kashiharajingu-mae). No gate, no ticket; Takamatsuzuka Mural Hall 300 cash, Tachibana-dera 400 cash. I rented at 9:05 a.m. weekday: e-assist (the Inabuchi slope chews standard legs), rode the country grid counterclockwise—station → Takamatsuzuka (10 min) → Kameishi turtle-stone (photo, free) → Ishibutai (inside the chamber, 20 min alone) → Asukadera → Sakafuneishi → back via Amakashi-no-oka overlook. 3.5h, 1,500 yen, zero traffic light stress. Bought a 180-yen konbini onigiri (IC) at the Asuka station Lawsons for the Ishibutai bench. IC train, 900–1,500 cash bike. Etiquette: ride left, helmet on (lent free), lock at every stop (theft rare but the rule), don’t climb the Ishibutai capstone (it’s a tomb), the paddies are farmed—no off-path shortcut. Mistake: I once came 13:00 August—paddy glare, the Ishibutai chamber a 5-deep whisper. 9:05 weekday, capstone shadow, is Asuka’s own 7th century. Question: when a nation’s birthplace is a valley of rice fields with stones nobody can explain, is the history the relic or the silence between them?

Just a 10-minute walk from Kintetsu Asuka Station, you'll find two scrapped naval mines sitting in front of the Chokonhi (monument to loyal souls) on the north side of the former Sakaai Clinic. The grass was a bit overgrown on the day I visited, but it looks like it gets mowed regularly 🧐 The monument was erected in 1928 (Showa 3), a time when projects celebrating the enthronement of Emperor Showa were taking place all over the country. The monument itself was built as part of the former Sakaai Village's enthronement commemoration, and it seems the naval mines were brought in around the same time. Since Sakaai Village is entirely surrounded by mountains, the locals had very little connection to naval concepts or coastal defense. To help raise awareness and deepen their understanding, they reportedly requested the Navy to grant them naval mines and a 12cm artillery shell. The request was submitted in August, and the official directive from the Ministry of the Army to the Commander of the Kure Naval District was issued in November. Ultimately, two scrapped buoy naval mine canisters, previously stored by the Kure Naval Munitions Department, were granted to serve as fixtures for the monument. The mines are just over a meter in diameter. They're heavily rusted, but you can still clearly see every single rivet perfectly intact. It's absolutely terrifying to think that these things used to float in the ocean, ready to blow up on impact... 😰 Fun fact: The calligraphy on the monument was written by General Hyoe Ichinohe of the Imperial Japanese Army, a soldier originally from the Hirosaki Domain. He fought in the Satsuma Rebellion, the First Sino-Japanese War, and the Russo-Japanese War. During the Russo-Japanese War, he achieved great distinction by capturing a key fort during the Siege of Port Arthur 🎌 【 𝕀𝕟𝕗𝕠𝕣𝕞𝕒𝕥𝕚𝕠𝕟 】 📍 Hinokuma, Asuka Village, Takaichi District, Nara Prefecture 🚶‍♀️ About a 10-minute walk from Kintetsu Asuka Station 🅿️ Parking space available in front of the clinic ⁡.⁡ ⁡. ⁡ Asuka Village Sightseeing Stroll

Upstream of the Asuka River lies the shrine with the longest name in Japan. Its name is "Asukakawakaminiimasu Usutakihimenomikoto Shrine." That's a mouthful! 😇 It doesn't have a main sanctuary (honden); instead, Mount Nabuchi, located directly behind the worship hall (haiden), serves as its object of worship. As the name suggests, it enshrines the deity Usutakihimenomikoto. The shrine buildings are reached by climbing about 200 stone steps from the prefectural road along the river. 🚶♀️ Usutakihimenomikoto actually refers to "Tagitsuhime," the wife of Okuninushi-no-Mikoto and one of the Three Goddesses of Munakata. The deity's name roughly breaks down to "Usu" meaning splendid, and "Takihimenomikoto" meaning Tagitsuhime. ✍️ The shrine is also known as the place where Empress Kogyoku prayed for rain. According to legend, during a severe drought in 642, the Empress offered prayers here. Following a clap of thunder, heavy rain poured down continuously for five days. ☔️ This legend is believed to be the origin of the "Namode Dance," a rainmaking dance still preserved in various parts of Nara Prefecture. In Asuka Village, a local preservation society has restored the traditional dance associated with this shrine and occasionally holds public performances. On the shrine grounds, Emperor Ojin and Empress Jingu are enshrined on both sides of the large worship hall, alongside stone lanterns engraved with the characters for "Hachimangu." Behind the worship hall, there is a sacred barrier (kekkai) with a torii gate standing right in the middle. ⛩ Although it serves as the tutelary shrine (ujigami) for the four major districts of Inabuchi, Kayamori, Iritani, and Hata, the stone fence remains collapsed, and a building just below it has decayed so much that its original shape is unrecognizable. I wonder if rural depopulation is to blame. 🧐 Currently, the shrine is jointly managed by Asukaniimasu Shrine, where you can also receive its goshuin (shrine stamp). It was a visit that made me hope its rich history will somehow continue to be passed down to future generations, even if the physical buildings eventually fade away. 😌 ⁡⁡【 𝕀𝕟𝕗𝕠𝕣𝕞𝕒𝕥𝕚𝕠𝕟 】⁡ 📍 698 Inabuchi, Asuka Village, Takaichi-gun, Nara Prefecture 🚗 Approx. 10 minutes from Kintetsu Asuka Station 🚶♀️ Approx. 60 minutes from Kintetsu Asuka Station 🅿️ None ⁡.⁡ ⁡.

June 10 is Time Memorial Day in Japan. This anniversary was established in 1920, inspired by a record in the *Nihon Shoki* (Chronicles of Japan) stating that on this day in 671 (solar calendar), Emperor Tenji built Japan's very first water clock in the capital city of Otsu. 🕛 Interestingly, the same historical text mentions that 11 years prior, in 660, Prince Naka-no-Oe (who later became Emperor Tenji) constructed a clock tower to announce the time to the public. The "Asuka Mizuochi Ruins" in Asuka Village are believed to be the exact remains of this tower. ☝️ These ruins were unexpectedly discovered in 1972 during a survey for a new house. Subsequent excavations revealed it to be a large-scale structural remain with a highly unique design. Today, it proudly stands as a designated national historic site. When you visit, you can see the reconstructed foundation of the building. Experts estimate that a grand pavilion, supported by a framework of 24 pillars, once stood proudly on this very base. The time-keeping device used here was a type of water clock known as a "rokoku." Water tanks were arranged in a staircase-like structure, and time was read by measuring the depth of the water collecting in the bottom-most tank. 👀 The clever multi-tiered tank design was used to maintain a consistent water flow rate, countering changes in water pressure as the volume shifted. If you're curious, you can actually see a reconstructed model of this fascinating water clock at the Asuka Historical Museum! ✨️ The wooden planks running crisscross between the pillars on the restored foundation represent the exact locations of wooden and copper pipes used for water supply and drainage, which were unearthed during the excavation. The central stone area is where the main water-receiving tank was likely placed. Additionally, in the northwest corner of the ruins, you can observe parts of a rare "underground beam" construction technique. This involved placing foundation stones, filling the gaps with rocks, and tightly packing rammed earth on top to create a rock-solid base. This water clock tower is thought to have been established based on the concept of "controlling time," a political ideal adopted from China. It is truly the birthplace of timekeeping in Japan—a perfect spot to visit, especially on Time Memorial Day. ✨️ 【 𝕀𝕟𝕗𝕠𝕣𝕞𝕒𝕥𝕚𝕠𝕟 】 📍 Asuka, Asuka Village, Takaichi District, Nara Prefecture 🚍 Approx. a 2-minute walk from the "Asuka" bus stop (about a 15-minute ride from Kintetsu Kashiharajingu-mae Station) 🚶 Approx. a 40-minute walk from Kintetsu Kashiharajingu-mae Station 🅿️ Available (Asuka Yume no Rakuichi Parking Lot) ⁡.⁡ ⁡.

The workshop is actually in the annex! It's connected to the main building, so you can head there without getting wet in the rain🤭 The room right past the gift shop is the workshop. There's also a restroom right next to it. The experience takes over an hour, so make sure to use the restroom before you start🚻 This time, we tried the magatama (curved jewel) making experience! The fee is just 400 yen! It's super affordable. The price makes it really easy to try out, right?😆 You shape it by carving a soft stone called soapstone. You can choose between a stone with the magatama shape drawn on it in pen, or a completely blank stone. As for colors, you can choose between a regular color and pink🤭 All the tools are provided, so you just put on an apron and quietly carve away. I went with the pink one with the lines drawn on it this time. I really just focused and carved along the lines. Once that's done, you refine the shape by beveling the edges. Eventually, you switch to sandpaper and keep sanding away! You keep finishing it up until you're completely satisfied with the result😚 At the very end, they attach a string to it, and it's done! If there are spots available, you can even sign up on the same day! This is a weekend-only experience plan, so if you're interested, I highly recommend making a reservation! Polishing is tough work, but if you put in the effort, your reflection will clearly It's affordable and doesn't take up too much time, so definitely give it a try for a great souvenir😊 making

You can enjoy this experience inside the Shijin no Yakata, Kitora Tumulus Mural Experience Museum! The address is 67 Abeyama, Asuka Village, Takaichi District, Nara Prefecture. The workshop is located in the annex! It's connected to the main building, so you can head over without getting wet if it rains 🤭 The workshop is the room right next door to the souvenir shop. There are also restrooms right next to it. The experience takes over an hour, so be sure to use the restroom beforehand 🚻 This time, we tried making a Sea Beast and Grape Mirror! These mirrors were actually excavated from the Takamatsuzuka Tumulus, not the Kitora Tumulus 😌 There are two sizes available for the mirror-making experience: large and small. Both take about an hour to complete. Large (approx. 8 cm) - 1,500 yen Small (approx. 5.5 cm) - 600 yen Same-day sign-ups are accepted if there are open spots! Since this is a weekend-only activity, we highly recommend making a reservation if you're interested! Polishing the mirror takes some effort, but if you work hard at it, you'll be able to see your face clearly reflected 😝 As you can see in the photo, it reflects an iPhone perfectly 🤭 It's affordable and doesn't take too much time, so it's a perfect way to make some memories 😊

Kitora Tumulus Mural Experience Hall: Shijin no Yakata Address: 67 Abeyama, Asuka Village, Takaichi-gun, Nara Admission: Free Hours: 9:30 AM – 5:00 PM Opened in 2016 right next to the Kitora Tumulus, this facility offers a fun and engaging way to learn about the ancient burial mound and its national treasure murals. It features a life-size replica of the stone chamber, which you can actually step inside on weekends when a guide is available. The interior of the replica is quite narrow, accommodating a maximum of about three people at a time. Inside, the Four Gods (Azure Dragon, White Tiger, Vermilion Bird, and Black Tortoise), an astronomical chart, the figures of the Chinese zodiac, and even the cracks in the plaster have been faithfully recreated. Even though it's a replica, seeing it was truly a moving experience. There are also videos of the initial discovery and exhibits covering the excavation process and Asuka-period culture. It’s hard to believe such an impressive exhibition is completely free of charge! They also have a stamp station, which makes for a great little souvenir ☺️
