When most people think of Cappadocia, they immediately picture hot air balloons floating above the fairy chimneys. I was excited for that too, but during my trip, the balloons didn’t fly because of the weather. Surprisingly, I wasn’t disappointed at all. Instead, I discovered another side of Cappadocia—one filled with peaceful towns, breathtaking scenery, delicious food, and unforgettable moments. 🤍 🏡 Starting the day in a cave hotel I stayed at Potamia Cave Suites, and it was one of the most unique accommodations I’ve ever experienced. Sleeping inside a traditional cave room is something you simply have to try at least once. The hotel perfectly combines authentic Cappadocian architecture with modern comfort, creating a cozy and relaxing atmosphere. Waking up surrounded by ancient stone walls made me feel like I had stepped into another era. ☕ Coffee with an incredible view No trip is complete without a good cup of coffee. Before exploring, I visited Espresso Lab Cappadocia, a beautiful café where I enjoyed a delicious coffee while taking in the peaceful surroundings. It was the perfect place to slow down, recharge, and appreciate the beauty of Cappadocia before continuing the adventure. 🌿 Discovering the peaceful town of Avanos One of my favorite places in Cappadocia turned out to be Avanos. Unlike the rocky landscapes that make Cappadocia famous, Avanos is incredibly green. Tall trees line the streets, colorful flowers brighten every corner, and the peaceful Kızılırmak River, the longest river in Turkey, flows gently through the town. One of the highlights was crossing the famous suspension bridge. As soon as you step onto it, you’ll notice that it gently sways beneath your feet. It may feel a little unusual at first, but after a few steps, it becomes part of the fun. Standing in the middle of the bridge, surrounded by beautiful river views, lush greenery, and the quiet atmosphere of Avanos, was one of my favorite moments of the entire trip. 🌉🌳 I also loved watching the ducks swimming in the river while local families enjoyed their afternoon walks nearby. Everything felt calm, peaceful, and authentic. 🎨 The home of Turkish pottery Avanos has been famous for pottery for centuries. As I wandered through the charming streets, I discovered countless ceramic workshops where talented local artisans continue traditions that have been passed down through generations. The handmade pottery, colorful ceramics, and small family-owned shops gave the town so much character. Even if you’re not planning to buy souvenirs, simply exploring these workshops is an experience worth having. 🍽️ An unforgettable dinner After a wonderful day exploring Avanos, I had dinner at Narin Restaurant, and it quickly became one of my favorite restaurants in Cappadocia. The atmosphere was warm and welcoming, the staff were incredibly kind, and every dish reflected the rich flavors of traditional Turkish cuisine. Everything tasted fresh, homemade, and beautifully prepared. It was the perfect way to end such a memorable day. ❤️ Cappadocia is much more than hot air balloons My trip reminded me that the best travel experiences often come from unexpected moments. Although I didn’t get to see the balloons in the sky, I experienced peaceful mornings in a cave hotel, enjoyed excellent coffee, walked across a gently swaying suspension bridge, explored the charming streets of Avanos, admired centuries-old pottery traditions, tasted authentic Turkish cuisine, and met wonderful people along the way. Sometimes, the places that aren’t on your original itinerary become the ones you remember the most. If you’re planning a trip to Cappadocia, don’t rush from one famous viewpoint to another. Slow down, explore the local towns, enjoy the cafés, walk along the river, cross the suspension bridge, and let yourself experience the true soul of this magical region. Day 1: Arrival & Journey to Cappadocia · Istanbul Connection to Cappadocia: Land in Istanbul, clear immigration, grab an Istanbulkart, and catch a domestic flight straight to Cappadocia. · Evening in Göreme: Head to my hotel in Göreme by airport shuttle to settle in and get a good night's rest for an early start tomorrow. Just make sure you are using the official government portal, as there are many third-party website copies that look similar to the real one. 2. Currency Exchange: · If you have time in Istanbul, head to the Grand Bazaar - the exchange booths inside offer some of the best rates in the country. Keep in mind that the Grand Bazaar is closed on Sundays. · If you are flying straight to Cappadocia without visiting central Istanbul first, look for a PTT (the official post office). They cap exchanges at $300 USD per transaction and the rate isn't quite as competitive as the Grand Bazaar, but it is still significantly better than airport exchange counters. 3. Accommodation Choice: · In Cappadocia, I personally prefer staying in a standard room over a traditional cave hotel, as cave rooms can feel a bit damp and carry a faint smell of mortar or stone dust. · In Istanbul, I recommend booking a stay in the Sultanahmet area - it’s clean, charming, and super convenient for walking to major sights. 4. If you are planning a trip to Cappadocia, I highly recommend staying for at least two nights because every morning can be completely different, especially when it comes to the hot air balloons. For our first night, we stayed in Göreme at Aydınlı Cave Hotel because we had booked a hot air balloon flight for the following morning. The hotel had a more rustic and authentic cave-style atmosphere, with stone walls and a slightly raw, traditional feeling. The room was comfortable and full of character, making it a memorable place to stay in Göreme. Unfortunately, our balloon flight was cancelled because of bad weather. We were very disappointed at first because riding a hot air balloon in Cappadocia had always been one of our dreams. However, balloon flights depend heavily on wind and weather conditions, so cancellations can happen even when the sky does not look too bad. The next day, we moved to Azure Cave Suites in Çavuşin Village. We tried to book another balloon flight, but unfortunately all the seats for the following morning were already full, so we could only watch the balloons from the hotel. Azure Cave Suites had a completely different atmosphere from our first hotel. It felt brighter, cuter, and more colorful. The hotel is located high on the hillside, so the view was absolutely beautiful. The breakfast room was on the upper level, where we could enjoy the scenery while eating. The breakfast itself was presented in such a lovely and colorful way, which made the morning feel even more special. We also met a very cute cat at the hotel, which made the stay even more memorable for us. Early the next morning, we walked outside and suddenly saw so many colorful balloons rising into the sky. Even though we could not ride in one, the view was still breathtaking. The balloons floated slowly above the valleys, with the ancient village of Çavuşin standing beautifully in the background. Because Azure Cave Suites is located quite high up, we did not have to travel anywhere to enjoy the view. We simply stepped outside the hotel and watched the balloons fill the sky. It was peaceful, beautiful, and one of those moments that photographs can never fully capture. During the daytime, we also explored Çavuşin Village itself. The village is known for its ancient cave houses, rock formations, and old churches carved into the cliffs. It felt quieter and less crowded than Göreme, which made walking around very enjoyable. We visited Cappadocia in April, when the weather was cool and comfortable for sightseeing. However, spring weather can be unpredictable, so I recommend staying for at least two or three mornings if riding a hot air balloon is very important to you. In the end, even though our balloon flight was cancelled and we could not book another one, watching the balloons rise above Çavuşin from Azure Cave Suites became one of the most beautiful memories of our trip. Çavuşin Kalesi is one of the most dramatic places to understand old Cappadocia. It is called a “castle,” but it is not a classic fortress with towers. It is the upper part of old Çavuşin village — a huge volcanic rock settlement carved directly into the cliff. 🏰 WHAT THIS PLACE WAS For centuries, people lived inside this soft Cappadocian rock. The cliff had cave homes, storage rooms, passages, churches and small carved spaces on different levels. From below, it looks like a honeycomb wall; from inside, you can see how village life was built into the stone. ⛪ HISTORICAL FACTS Çavuşin had a mixed population until the early 20th century, including Orthodox Christian families. One of the most important sites here is the Church of St. John the Baptist, often described as one of the oldest and largest rock-cut churches in Cappadocia, dating to around the 5th–early 6th century. 🪨 WHY IT WAS ABANDONED The old cliff-side settlement became unsafe because of erosion, rockfalls and collapses. People were eventually moved from the old cave houses to safer modern homes, and the upper village became the abandoned rock settlement you see today. 👀 WHAT YOU SEE NOW The climb takes you past cave openings, old rooms, broken stone walls, arches and natural “windows” overlooking Çavuşin village. From the top, you get wide views of the valleys, fairy chimneys, the village below and the Cappadocia landscape. 🥾 GOOD TO KNOW The route is not long, but it is uneven, dusty and rocky in places. Wear proper shoes, avoid unstable openings and do not climb where the rock looks fragile. Plan around 45–60 minutes for the climb, photos and views. ✨ MY IMPRESSION Çavuşin Kalesi felt raw, historic and more atmospheric than many polished Cappadocia stops. The town is small, within walking distance to the Open Air Museum, and close to the starting points for hiking in Rose Valley and Red Valley—super convenient for exploring on foot. The entire house is an authentic natural cave, with rock walls featuring gentle natural curves. The rooms maintain a natural constant temperature, warm in winter and cool in summer, making your stay especially comfortable. In the early morning, lean against the arched stone window and watch hundreds of hot air balloons slowly rise and fill the sky—far more breathtaking in real life than any filter! The rooftop terrace faces the whole of Göreme, where at dusk warm light spreads over the ochre rooftops, and the evening breeze is soft and pleasant. When the sun peeks over the ridge, hundreds of balloons bathe in golden light simultaneously. The awe of this moment makes the early wake-up completely worth it. After landing, there’s a champagne celebration and a certificate is awarded. Remember to wear bright colors for photos—red, yellow, and white all look great. If your first day is canceled due to weather, don’t be discouraged; it’s best to reserve two nights so you have another chance to fly. · -- 🪂 Paragliding Flight Paragliding in Fethiye is definitely a game for the brave, costing about 874 CNY per person. We recommend Reaction company. You leap from Baba Mountain at 2000 meters, and the instructor will guide you soaring over the Dead Sea. The water is so clear you can see coral 30 meters deep, and the wind whistles past your ears. This feeling of freedom is exhilarating. Be sure to buy the video; the instructor will film you from various angles and take 360-degree panoramic photos. Watching them later will bring back wonderful memories. You land right on the Dead Sea beach, where you can immediately play in the water. The jelly-like sea colors are breathtakingly beautiful. · -- 🌉 Istanbul: The City of Two Continents Istanbul is the only city in the world that spans both Europe and Asia. The Hagia Sophia has nearly 1,500 years of history, with a dome that is truly awe-inspiring. The Blue Mosque has over 20,000 blue glazed tiles and 260 windows; when sunlight streams in, the entire hall is bathed in blue light and shadow. The Basilica Cistern, a filming location for "The Da Vinci Code," has 336 stone columns and two Medusa head bases, creating a mysterious atmosphere. Topkapi Palace was the Ottoman imperial palace; the harem area is worth a visit to understand the Sultan’s life. The Grand Bazaar has over 4,000 shops selling carpets, spices, and lamps—bargaining to half the price is the norm. A Bosphorus Strait cruise is a must. Experience standing with one foot in Europe and the other in Asia. The European side features red-roofed old town, while the Asian side is a fishing village. Kaputas Beach’s water shifts from mint green to Tiffany blue, as if a jewelry box has been spilled. Kalkan town retains the original Mediterranean charm without over-commercialization. Enjoy grilled fish at seaside restaurants while feeling the sea breeze—so relaxing. The Chimera Flames are natural underground gas fires that burn year-round. Visit at night to see flickering flames among the mountains—truly magical. · -- 🕳️ Cave Secrets Cappadocia’s underground cities are a testament to ancient wisdom. Kaymakli Underground City has 8 levels like a maze, with the deepest part 40 meters down. It was once a refuge for Christians escaping persecution, containing kitchens, churches, wine cellars, and even cemeteries. Walking inside is truly awe-inspiring. The Goreme Open-Air Museum is a group of rock-cut churches with thousand-year-old frescoes. Uchisar Castle is the highest point, offering panoramic views of all Cappadocia. Cappadocia boasts some of the world's most spectacular weathered landscapes. With towering, steep rock formations shaped like camels, pillars, and cones, it is famous for its "Fairy Chimneys." The perk of joining a group tour is being able to comfortably reach all these must-see spots by tour bus. Since the climate is quite dry and hot, riding a tour bus is a very comfortable choice~ 3️⃣ Taksim Square 💛 Known as the Champs-Élysées of Istanbul ~ Taksim Square, which is also Turkey's Istiklal Avenue, allows you to admire the eclectic mix of Rococo and Baroque architecture on both sides. Weaving through the iconic red vintage trams really gives you a European vibe. Come to Turkey to experience the freedom of hot air ballooning! Cappadocia is absolutely stunning 🎈 The night before, I was worried the weather wouldn’t be good enough to fly, but at dawn the next day, seeing the sky filled with hot air balloons slowly rising made me feel like my life was complete ✨ 📍Goreme Town This is the main base for hot air balloon experiences. It’s recommended to stay at least two nights to increase your chances of flying. We chose Butterfly Balloons company, and their 5 AM pick-up service was very punctual. Once airborne, you can see the entire surreal landscape of Cappadocia. The pilot thoughtfully rotates the basket to ensure everyone can capture the beautiful scenery. 📍Uchisar Castle After landing the hot air balloon, you can visit this high vantage point. Not only can you overlook all of Goreme, but you can also see the full view of Rose Valley. The castle itself is a cave fortress carved into the rock, perfect for taking Instagram-worthy photos. 📍Devrent Valley Also known as Camel Valley, the rock formations here are incredibly unique! At sunset, the light is very gentle, and the rock pillars turn pink. Many couples choose this spot for proposals. 💡Useful Tips: 1. Book the hot air balloon at least 3 days in advance! We almost missed out. 2. It’s very cold at dawn, so bring a thick jacket but don’t dress too bulky. 3. The first flight at sunrise is the most beautiful, but the second flight is about 1/3 cheaper. 4. There is a champagne celebration after landing, so remember to keep some cash for tips. 🏨 Accommodation Recommendation: The Museum Hotel is absolutely amazing! The cave pool faces the hot air balloon launch site. While having breakfast on the terrace, hundreds of hot air balloons floated right overhead—this experience is truly unforgettable. 🍴 Must-Try Food: You must try the pot-cooked beef! The stew at Topdeck Cave Restaurant is incredible. Remember to reserve a window seat in advance.

Originally, I was prepared not to see the hot air balloons. While packing to leave Göreme, I saw that the balloons would fly tomorrow, and instantly felt a small regret of "just one step away from perfection." During the days waiting for the balloons, the itinerary was packed: visiting Uçhisar Castle to overlook the entire Cappadocia valley and mountains from the high point; exploring the mysterious underground city, touching the tunnels and chambers carved by ancient people thousands of years ago; seeing the bizarre volcanic rock pillars among the fairy chimneys; and admiring the colorful frescoes at the Göreme Open-Air Museum. However, as someone from Gansu, these landforms and grottoes didn’t bring much surprise, especially when opening the window every day and seeing the bare winter landscape, it felt like being at home. But the only thing that could fill the regret was the night view from the Göreme viewpoint. Truly worthy of being called Lalaland, it’s mesmerizing and hard to look away.

The most famous thing about the Cappadocia area is the caves. Whether it is a museum, a restaurant or a hotel, they all have views of the caves. I prefer modern hotels, but the cave hotels do not give me a good sense of security. DoubleTree by Hilton Avanos is the fourth Hilton hotel we stayed in during our trip to Turkey. In addition to the comfortable and clean environment, it also has my favorite swimming pool. Although it is not as convenient as the previous hotels in the city center, the scenery next to the hotel is really refreshing. Also, the hotel is close to the hot air balloon flight site tomorrow, so you have to go to bed early at night because you have to get up at around 3 a.m. to prepare for the hot air balloon flight.
