The huge golden boulder seems to balance on the edge of the mountain, and according to local belief, it is kept from falling by a strand of Buddha's hair. As we drove into town, the endless expanse of lush paddy fields stretched wide under the bright morning sky, instantly trading city noise for calming countryside views. Our first stop was the iconic Nan Tian Temple, perched right in the middle of the fields. The vibrant red and gold architecture created a striking contrast against the emerald rice stalks. Climbing up the temple offered a sweeping, panoramic look over the entire valley. Just down the road at Parit 5, we came across one of Sekinchan’s most surreal attractions: a real, full-sized aeroplane grounded right in the center of the paddy fields. Standing next to an aircraft nestled among quiet farmland made for an unforgettable photo stop. After a morning of exploring under the sun, we headed over to Bagan for a proper coastal feast at Restoran Makanan Laut Yujiaren. Known for serving some of the freshest catch in town, the restaurant did not disappoint. We dug into a spread of sweet, succulent steamed coral grouper, flavorful salted egg stir fry crab, and perfectly seasoned tofu, vegetables and fish maw pot, each dish packed with rich local flavor. Wandering through golden crops, discovering odd landmarks, and finishing with exceptional seafood made the journey completely worthwhile. Sekinchan truly delivers the ultimate weekend escape.

If you want to see a different side of Myanmar, Inle Lake is a place I would recommend. The lake is famous for its floating villages, fishermen who row with one leg, wooden houses built on the water, and a very slow way of life. It is quite different from Yangon or Bagan, so I think 2 days 1 night is a good amount of time for a first visit. ⭐ My Take Inle Lake is not really about ticking off a long list of attractions. The best part is simply being on the water, passing small villages and floating gardens, watching fishermen work, and seeing how people have built their lives around the lake. It is interesting to see how daily life has adapted completely to the lake. 🛕 Nga Phe Chaung Monastery Visit Nga Phe Chaung Monastery, one of the oldest wooden monasteries in the Inle Lake area. The wooden structure and peaceful location make it one of the more interesting cultural stops on the lake. 🛍️ Local Market If your trip matches the market schedule, visit one of the local rotating markets around the Inle Lake area. It is a good place to see local people from different villages coming together to buy and sell food, vegetables and everyday products. ☕ Relax by the Lake After lunch, don't try to pack too much into the schedule. Enjoy a coffee or tea, walk around the local area, and simply take in the scenery before continuing your journey. 🚗 How to Get to Inle Lake The easiest gateway is Heho Airport, which serves the Inle Lake area. From the airport, you can take a taxi or private transfer to Nyaung Shwe, the main town used by most visitors to explore the lake. If you have already visited Yangon and Bagan and want to see something less touristy, I would definitely consider Mrauk U. It was once the capital of the ancient Rakhine Kingdom. Today, the area is surrounded by old temples, small villages and green hills. It is much quieter than Bagan, and that is probably what I like most about it. ⭐ My Take Mrauk U is not the easiest place to get to, but that is also why it still feels special. If Bagan is the place to see Myanmar's famous temple landscape, Mrauk U is where I would go to experience a quieter, more local side of the country's history. 💰 Estimated Budget: USD 120–180/person This includes 1 night of accommodation, local transportation, meals and sightseeing. Transportation to and from Mrauk U is not included. 📍 Day 1: Temples Around Mrauk U 🛕 Shitthaung Temple Start with Shitthaung, probably the most famous temple in Mrauk U. The temple looks more like a stone fortress than the typical open Buddhist temples you see in Bagan. Take your time walking through the small corridors inside. There are many Buddha images and stone carvings to look at. 🏯 Htukkanthein Temple Next, visit Htukkanthein Temple. It is another old stone temple, but smaller and more compact than Shitthaung. The narrow entrance and dark corridors make it quite different from other temples in Myanmar. 🛕 Andaw Thein Temple Andaw Thein is close to the main temple area, so it is easy to visit on the same day. It does not take too long, but the old stone architecture is worth seeing. 🌅 Sunset Around Mrauk U In the late afternoon, find a quiet spot around the temple area and watch the sunset. You don't really need a special viewpoint here. Just seeing the old temples with the hills and countryside in the background is already a nice experience. Stay overnight in Mrauk U. 📍 Day 2: Sunrise & Local Life 🌄 Sunrise Get up early and go out before breakfast. Mrauk U can look completely different in the morning, especially when there is mist around the temples and hills. It is also much cooler and more comfortable for walking around. 🏘️ Visit Local Villages After breakfast, spend some time exploring the villages outside the main temple area. This part is worth doing if you want to see something beyond temples. You can see local houses, farming and everyday life in the Rakhine region. 🗿 Mahamuni Buddha Image Continue to the Mahamuni Buddha Image, one of the important religious sites in the area. It is also a good stop if you are interested in the history of the old Rakhine Kingdom. 🍜 Lunch & Rakhine Food Before leaving, try some local Rakhine food. Seafood dishes and Rakhine noodles are good choices, especially if you want something different from the usual Burmese dishes found in Yangon and Bagan. 🚗 How to Get There Mrauk U is not as easy to reach as Bagan. A common way is to travel to Sittwe first and then continue to Mrauk U by local transportation. Mount Popa is located in central Myanmar about 50 km southeast of Bagan. 🏔️ It is known as the home to the 37 Nats (Spirits), an extinct volcano with a monastery on top named the Popa Taung Kalat meaning pedestal hill. 🏔️ Mount Popa means flower mountain rises about 4981 feet high above sea level and covered with grown forest. 🏔️ From the base of the volcanic outcrop, you can take 777 steps to the top of the monastery. 🏔️ The staircase up the hill is covered with a metal roof for shade. 🏔️ You can enjoy a panoramic view from the top of the Taung Kalat. Myanmar is one of those places that surprised me more than I expected. Before going, I mostly pictured temples and pagodas, but once I was there, I realized there’s so much more to the country. Beautiful landscapes, incredibly kind people, chaotic little streets, quiet villages, and places that still feel very untouched by mass tourism. When is the best time to visit Myanmar? For me, the best time is November to February. The weather is generally cooler and drier, which makes a huge difference when you’re spending hours walking around temples or exploring outside. December and January are especially comfortable. The mornings can actually feel quite cool in places like Bagan and Inle Lake, while the afternoons are usually warm and pleasant. I’d personally avoid the hottest months around March to May unless you’re really comfortable with intense heat. The rainy season, roughly June to October, can still be beautiful, but getting around may be less predictable. Where should you go? Bagan was easily one of the highlights for me. There are thousands of ancient temples scattered across this huge landscape, and seeing them in the early morning is something I won’t forget. You don’t need to rush from temple to temple either. Just renting an e-bike and wandering around without much of a plan was part of the experience. Yangon feels completely different. It’s busy, slightly chaotic, and full of character. Shwedagon Pagoda is the obvious highlight, especially around sunset when the entire place starts glowing. Then there’s Inle Lake, which was probably the most peaceful part of the trip. Taking a boat across the lake, passing floating gardens and small villages built over the water, felt like entering another side of Myanmar entirely. Mandalay is also worth adding if you have enough time. I especially liked exploring the areas outside the city, including ancient temples and the famous U Bein Bridge. Myanmar isn’t necessarily the easiest destination to travel around, and the situation in the country means it requires more planning than most places I visit. But that’s also why I wouldn’t treat it like a typical spontaneous holiday right now. Before planning a trip, I’d always check the latest travel advice and the situation in the specific areas I wanted to visit.
