Khulna & Bagerhat Travel Guide: From Historic UNESCO Mosques to the Wild Sundarbans
Khulna Division is the southwest gateway of Bangladesh, globally celebrated for hosting the Sundarbans, the world's largest mangrove forest, and the UNESCO World Heritage monuments of Bagerhat. Located roughly an hour’s drive from Khulna City, Bagerhat is an ancient, sacred district founded in the 15th century by the Sufi saint-warrior Khan Jahan Ali.
Bagerhat: The Historic Mosque City
The Mosque City of Bagerhat is a sprawling archeological wonder showcasing distinctive 15th-century Tughlaq-style red brick architecture.
Shat Gombuj Masjid (Sixty Dome Mosque): This is the largest Sultanate-era mosque in Bangladesh. Ironically, while called "Sixty Dome," it actually features 81 domes supported internally by exactly 60 stone pillars. It is open Friday to Wednesday from 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM, and Thursdays from 9:00 AM to 5:00 AM (with extended evening lighting available). Entry is roughly 20 to 30 BDT for locals and 500 BDT for international tourists, which includes access to an on-site museum.
Khan Jahan Ali Majar (Mausoleum): Located roughly 1.5 km away from the Sixty Dome Mosque, this is the final resting place of saint Khan Jahan Ali. Built in 1459, it features a single grand dome and intricate stone carvings. Right next to it is the Khan Jahan Ali Dighi, a massive 40-acre pond famous for housing marsh crocodiles. The site is open 24 hours daily with free entry.
Other Architectural Treasures: Nearby gems include the Singair Masjid (a beautiful single-domed mosque across the main road) and the Nine Dome Mosque (located near the Thakur Dighi pond, featuring ornate terracotta chains on its walls).
The Sundarbans: The Wild Mangrove Forest
The Sundarbans Mangrove Forest is a mystical intersection of rivers and dense forest, sprawling across the edge of the Bay of Bengal.
The Wildlife: It is the last remaining natural habitat of the endangered Royal Bengal Tiger. It also shelters spotted deer, saltwater crocodiles, rhesus macaques, and thousands of migratory bird species.
Karamjal Eco-Tourism Center: The most accessible entry point for day trips via Mongla Port. It features a wooden elevated walkway through the mangroves, a deer breeding facility, and a crocodile pond. It is open daily from 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM.
Hiron Point & Kotka: Remote wildlife sanctuaries deeper in the forest, accessible only via multi-day launches starting from Khulna city, offering the highest chance of spotting wild tigers and herds of chital deer.
Khulna City Attractions
If you are using Khulna city as your travel base, ensure you check out these signature urban hubs:
Khan Jahan Ali Bridge (Rupsha Setu): A stunning 1.6 km long bridge crossing the Rupsha River. It comes alive in the evening with street food stalls and cool breezes.
Rupsha River Cruise: Small local boats or evening dining cruises can be rented near the bridge for a scenic sunset ride.
Are you arranging a multi-day trip? I can help you plan a step-by-step travel itinerary from Khulna city or recommend the best boat tour packages to go deeper into the Sundarbans forest.
