Changbaishan is one of China's premier ski destinations, offering world-class skiing experiences amidst breathtaking natural surroundings. During our recent trip to Changbaishan, we stayed at the Hyatt Regency, which offered an excellent base for our skiing adventure. Located at the foot of the Changbai Mountains, the Hyatt Regency boasts a prime location in the heart of Changbaishan International Resort. The hotel features luxurious accommodations, with spacious rooms and suites offering stunning views of the mountains. The hotel's facilities are top-notch, including a spa, fitness center, and several excellent dining options. Of course, the main attraction during our trip was the skiing, and Changbaishan did not disappoint. The resort boasts over 43 kilometers of ski runs, with something for skiers of all levels, from beginners to experts. The snow quality was excellent, and we were able to enjoy the slopes in relative peace, as the resort is still somewhat undiscovered by international tourists. One of the highlights of our trip was skiing down the Changbai Grand Canyon, a breathtaking run that took us through a narrow canyon flanked by towering cliffs. Another highlight was the chance to ski on Changbai Mountain itself, one of the most majestic peaks in China. Overall, our ski trip to Changbaishan was an unforgettable experience, and the Hyatt Regency provided the perfect base for our adventure. It’s almost winter time so it’s time to plan your ski trip! 🤩 If you’re planning to go to Changbai mountain, then Sheraton can be your consideration. It is one of the more affordable option with decent facilities and not far from the ski resort itself. Room was good, all ski resort tickets are included (except clothes rental) and they have big gym, too, that is bigger than The Westin’s. The only drawback is that you’d need to walk outside to go to the swimming pool which is located inside The Westin building, and that it is one of the father away hotel location from the Hannasan hotspring resort (Hyatt is the nearest). The climb to the Red Cloud Golden Summit is almost vertical, with iron chains that make your palms sweat; a gust of wind will make your legs tremble. But when you reach the top and see the sea of clouds underfoot, it's all worth it. ⏰ Catch the first cable car up the mountain; after 10:00 AM the lines will make you question life. ⚠️ Weather on the mountain changes quickly; a raincoat is more useful than an umbrella. I was lucky last time — standing at the watershed marker, the Yellow River basin was on my left and the Yangtze basin on my right, and the wind cleared my head like nothing else. ⚠️ Down below, some family-run eateries sell wild mushroom stewed chicken at inflated prices — it’s CNY 60 a bowl. Photography isn’t allowed inside, but you can sit quietly and listen to the monks chanting. After descending, head straight to Best Food City. Don’t buy the thin plastic raincoats sold at the park entrance for CNY 10 — they tear in the wind. Dehang Grand Canyon deserves a full day. From Fenghuang bus station take the shuttle to Aizhai — about 1 hour, fare CNY 12. The Liu Sha waterfall in the canyon can look like a sheet of white cloth when the water is strong, with mist hitting your face and a refreshing coolness. Shibadong Village and the Aizhai Bridge can be combined. It's windy by the sea, so remember to bring a jacket if you go in the evening. There's no fee for the ancient city wall, but some smaller attractions inside require separate admission tickets. I recommend just walking the wall; the sunset view on the coastal side is truly beautiful. 02 Yinchuan | Ningxia In Yinchuan, the temperature difference between day and night will make you question reality. Start your morning at the Helan Mountain Rock Art before the sun heats up the rocks. The Sun God petroglyphs are clearest then; ⏰ before 10:00 AM, the light hits the cliff face at an angle, making the carvings look especially three-dimensional. Head back to the city center at noon for a bowl of lamb paomo, then head straight to the Western Xia Imperial Tombs in the afternoon. ⚠️ The Western Xia Imperial Tombs scenic area is huge, so be sure to take the sightseeing shuttle. Don't try to walk it; the stretch between Tomb No. 4 and Tomb No. 3 is scorching. Mingcui Lake National Wetland Park is better visited in spring or autumn; in summer, there are so many mosquitoes they could carry you away—I lasted half an hour last time before leaving. I personally find Shuidonggou just average; the admission ticket isn't cheap, and it's mainly about the landscape and ancient ruins. If you're not interested in prehistoric civilization, you can skip it. Sunsets in Yinchuan are very late—it's still bright at 8:30 PM. Take a walk near the Drum Tower in the evening; the local vibe of the old town is more comfortable than the scenic spots. 03 Baishan | Jilin For Changbai Mountain, prepare yourself mentally before coming—the weather changes in an instant. The day I went up, it was clear skies at the foot of the mountain, but it started raining halfway up. By the time I reached Heaven Lake, the wind was so strong I couldn't stand steady, but seeing that pool of blue water made it all worth it. ⏰ It's open from June to September each year. July and August are the most beautiful, but also the most crowded—expect to wait over an hour to queue for the off-road vehicle to go up. ⚠️ If you have to choose between the North Slope and the West Slope, I choose the North Slope. There are more attractions—the waterfall, hot springs, and Green Abyss Pool make it worth the trip. The West Slope requires climbing over 1,400 steps, so be cautious if traveling with elderly people or children. Things on the mountain are expensive; even instant noodles cost CNY 20, so bring some snacks. For accommodation, I recommend Erdaobaihe Town; it's close to the North Slope gate, allowing you to be among the first to go up in the morning and avoid the crowds. Oh, and you must try the hot spring eggs—the yolk is cooked while the white remains tender; you can't get them anywhere else. 04 Hulunbuir | Inner Mongolia For the Hulunbuir Grassland, first-timers often make a mistake: thinking all grasslands are the same and that you can just go anywhere to have fun. That's really not the case. 📍 Head north from Hailar. Once you pass the Jinzhanghan Tribe, the grassland really starts to look the part. The grass is knee-deep, and when the wind blows, it looks like green ocean waves. With flocks of sheep moving slowly in the distance, the scene is more stunning than any screensaver. ⏰ The grass is greenest from late June to early July, and it starts turning yellow by mid-August. If you want to photograph green grasslands, hurry up. ⚠️ Don't ride horses at the entrance of the scenic area; it's expensive and boring. Find horses belonging to local herdsmen—you can ride for half an hour for CNY 50, and they'll even let you gallop. If you're staying in a yurt at night, be sure to ask if it has a private bathroom, otherwise, a midnight bathroom trip will be an adventure. There are lots of mosquitoes, so don't skimp on the insect repellent. 05 Yulin | Shaanxi Yulin is a place I've kept to myself for a long time. Wave Valley goes without saying—the Danxia landform is incredibly red. ⏰ The light is best from 4:00 PM to 6:00 PM; when the sun hits the red sandstone, it looks like burning flames. ⚠️ Some parts of the scenic area don't have railings, so don't step over them for photos—there are deep ravines right below. I saw someone almost slip down with my own eyes. Red Stone Gorge is right on the edge of the city—a canyon with walls made entirely of red sandstone, inscribed with calligraphy from scholars throughout history. It takes about an hour to walk through at a leisurely pace. The Yellow River section in Jia County is even wilder. It takes two hours to drive there from Yulin city center, but you'll find it worth it once you arrive—the Yellow River makes a huge bend here, with muddy yellow water churning through the canyon. The sense of power is something photos just can't capture. For accommodation, choose the old town; you can walk the ancient city walls at night, which is more interesting than staying in the new district. 06 Yichun | Heilongjiang Yichun is a place truly held back by its name. When many people hear "Yichun," their first reaction is "Where?" But the Tangwang River Forest and Strange Rocks is definitely the most otherworldly place I've ever seen. Rocks emerge from the forest in strange shapes—some look like mushrooms, others like monsters. Walking through it feels like being on the set of a fantasy movie. ⏰ It's best to visit in mid-to-late September. The birch and larch trees covering the mountains start to change color—golden yellow mixed with dark green, a color palette so rich it leaves you speechless. ⚠️ Cell signal in the scenic area isn't great, so download offline maps in advance, or you'll easily get lost in the forest. What surprised me most was the air—that crisp, cool scent of pine resin makes your mind feel clear after just a couple of deep breaths. Stay at a homestay in Tangwanghe Town; you can see a sky full of stars at night, much brighter than in the city. 07 Guiyang | Guizhou In Guiyang, the biggest surprise for me was Tianhetan. I thought it was just an ordinary park, but the moment I walked into the karst cave, I was stunned. It has underground rivers, stalactites, and waterfalls. ⏰ Go in the morning when it's less crowded; the cave lighting combined with the damp stone walls feels like entering another world. I recommend visiting Qingyan Ancient Town in the afternoon. After 5:00 PM, the tour groups leave, and only locals and a few tourists are left on the stone-paved streets. The pig's trotters and rose sugar are both worth buying. Gaopo Yunding Grassland is better for a road trip. The mountain roads are winding, so take motion sickness medicine in advance, but once you reach the vast grassland at the top, with the windmills and cloud shadows, it can be described in two words: expansive. ⚠️ I personally think Huaxi Park is optional, unless you come in spring when the cherry blossoms are in bloom. Just stay in the city center; transportation near the Fountain is convenient, and there are so many food options at night you'll be spoiled for choice. 08 Qingyuan | Guangdong To be honest, before visiting Lianzhou Underground River, I thought it was one of those "might as well since I'm here" attractions, but it turned out to be amazing. Riding a boat through the underground river channel with a multi-story high cave ceiling overhead, stalactites shimmering under the lights, and the sound of water and oars echoing in the cave—that sense of depth is something no photo can capture. ⏰ The whole trip takes about an hour and a half. The temperature inside the cave is around 18°C year-round, making it a natural air-conditioned room in summer. ⚠️ Some sections in the cave are slippery, so wear non-slip shoes and avoid flip-flops. It's about a 30-minute drive from Lianzhou city center to the scenic area. There's no direct public transport, so I recommend driving or chartering a car. After seeing the cave, you can stop by the city center for a bowl of Lianzhou sliced noodles with sour bamboo shoots and beef—simple and satisfying. I've been to five of these eight cities, and the other three are still on my plan. The ancient charm of Quanzhou, the vastness of Yinchuan, the crisp coolness of Changbai Mountain, the openness of Hulunbuir, and the wildness of Yulin—each place is different from standard travel routes.
