Local costs are low, with plenty of affordable guesthouses, authentic food, and inexpensive wine. The natural scenery is diverse, featuring alpine meadows and deep canyons. With few tourists, you can experience a niche European trip on a low budget. 3. Armenia With thousands of years of history, ancient monasteries are scattered across the mountains, rich in religious and cultural heritage. Small towns are quiet and relaxed, with low prices for food and lodging, making travel affordable. The rolling mountains offer magnificent views. With diverse transportation options, controllable costs, and a wide variety of things to eat, drink, and do, it has a low barrier to entry and is the perfect first choice for beginners traveling abroad on a budget. 6. Nepal Backed by the majestic Himalayas, the snow-capped mountain views are stunning. Kathmandu is filled with ancient temples and many classic hiking trails. Local food and accommodation are inexpensive, the pace of life is slow, and the cultural atmosphere is rich. You do not need a high budget to get up close to the snow-capped mountains, temples, and simple local customs. 7. Serbia A hidden gem in Europe with visa-free entry, featuring ancient castles, cobblestone streets, and numerous cultural relics. Overall prices are very competitive for Europe, with affordable dining and accommodation, and a moderate number of tourists. The cities are laid-back and cozy, blending Eastern European charm. You can easily start a niche European budget trip without high expenses. 8. Indonesia Thousands of islands are scattered across the sea, with diverse scenery ranging from blue oceans to volcanic terraces. Local daily expenses are low, guesthouses offer great value, and the food is rich. Bali and Java are famous for their scenery; you can stroll on the beach or visit primitive villages. You can enjoy a healing island travel experience without spending much.

The landscape around Mount Batur became more impressive with every kilometre we travelled. We first saw the volcano from a panoramic terrace, then watched it move closer through the open sides of a jeep and finally stood on the black lava fields at its base. Our first stop was Montana Del Cafe in Kintamani. Its terraces face Mount Batur, making the café a convenient place to eat, relax and enjoy the scenery before continuing the journey. We were fortunate to visit on a clear day. The outline of the volcano was fully visible, and the enormous dark lava fields could be seen below. Only a few green areas interrupted the black landscape, creating an unusual contrast. From the terrace, Mount Batur appeared peaceful and distant. We had time to eat, take panoramic photographs and study the route that would soon bring us much closer to the volcano. The next part of the day began when three bright yellow open-top jeeps arrived. As we descended from the café, the scale of the landscape gradually changed. The volcano occupied more of the view with every turn, while the distant black areas slowly became recognisable as rough fields of solidified lava. Eventually, the asphalt road ended and the jeeps continued across the volcanic terrain. The colourful vehicles looked especially striking against the dark ground, and the open design made the ride feel like part of the adventure. The children loved this section and still remember the jeep journey as one of the highlights of our Bali trip. Along the way, we made several stops for photographs. We also left the jeeps and walked across the Black Lava fields beneath Mount Batur. Standing there felt completely different from looking at the same landscape from the café. From above, the lava had looked like a dark pattern. Up close, it was rugged, uneven and almost otherworldly, with the green slopes of the volcano rising behind it. The jeep experience lasted around three hours, including the drive, photo stops and time to explore the lava fields. It allowed us to experience the scale of Mount Batur without climbing to the summit. For me, the most memorable part was seeing one landscape transform through three perspectives: distant and calm from the café, increasingly dramatic from the road, and raw and powerful from the Black Lava fields. Mount Batur is impressive from a distance, but watching the volcano grow larger as we approached made the experience much more memorable. During one day in Kintamani, we saw the same landscape from three completely different perspectives. Our first stop was Montana Del Cafe. Its terraces overlook Mount Batur and the surrounding volcanic landscape, making it a convenient place to have something to eat while waiting for the next part of the trip. We were lucky with the weather: the volcano was completely visible. From the café, it looked calm and almost unreal, rising above wide black lava fields interrupted by only a few green patches. The distance made it possible to see the entire landscape at once and take panoramic photographs before moving closer. Then three bright yellow open-top jeeps arrived, and the atmosphere changed immediately. We left the café and began descending towards the volcano. Mount Batur appeared larger with every turn, while the black fields below gradually stopped looking like a distant pattern and became the road ahead of us. The asphalt eventually ended, and the jeeps began moving across rough pieces of solidified lava. The open vehicles made the journey feel like a real adventure rather than a simple transfer. This part was especially popular with the children and became one of their favourite experiences of the trip. We stopped several times for photographs and had time to walk across the Black Lava fields at the foot of Mount Batur. Up close, the landscape felt completely different from the peaceful panorama we had seen at the café. The ground was dark, uneven and rugged, while the green slopes of the volcano created a dramatic contrast above it. The complete jeep experience took around three hours. It gave us enough time for the drive, several photo stops and a walk on the lava fields without climbing to the summit. What made the day special was not a single viewpoint but the gradual approach: first seeing Mount Batur as a distant panorama, then watching it grow closer from the jeep and finally standing on the black lava beneath it. This is a place I've come back to again and again! 😎 I love these kinds of B&Bs in the summer; every photo I take looks like I'm on vacation abroad. This time I stayed at Kenting South of the Border. The room type was a private courtyard double room for a single woman. Having my own courtyard to run and jump around in was so wonderful! The bathroom was spacious and even had a bathtub. They even provided candles, so romantic! The rattan chairs in the relaxation area outside were also adorable. The room was clean and tidy overall. The refrigerator had water, drinks, and cookies—all free! Upon check-in, they will confirm the breakfast time and menu for the next day. There are several options to choose from. You can get refills of the bread before the meal if you're still hungry. Their Indonesian fried noodles are quite delicious. I miss my time in Bali! However, this time the pool on the second floor was gone, and the lounge chairs had been removed, which was a bit of a shame. But you can still go upstairs to see the sea and take photos. SAVE THIS POST FOR YOUR NUSA PENIDA TRIP 📌 If there’s one destination in Bali that activates several sides of my travel personality at once, it’s Nusa Penida. 🌿 The Nature Seeker wants the cliffs, beaches and turquoise water. 🎒 The Explorer wants to see what’s around the next corner. 📸 The Photographer wants to stop approximately every five minutes. 😎 And The Planner? She quickly realizes that Nusa Penida is NOT the island where you should arrive without understanding the logistics. 😄 So instead of just showing you beautiful photos, here’s the post I wish everyone saved before going: 🇮🇩 NUSA PENIDA: WHAT YOU ACTUALLY NEED TO KNOW First things first: Nusa Penida is much bigger than it looks on Instagram. You cannot realistically jump between every famous viewpoint, beach and snorkeling spot in a few hours without spending a huge part of your day in transit. The secret to enjoying Penida is not trying to see everything. It’s choosing the right combination of places. ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━ 🚤 1. HOW TO GET TO NUSA PENIDA Most travelers visit from Bali by fast boat. One of the most common departure points is Sanur, with boats taking you across the Badung Strait to Nusa Penida. 💡 PLANNER TIP: Don’t think only about the boat departure time. Factor in: · getting to the harbour · check-in · waiting · boarding · luggage · getting from the arrival port to your first stop · enough buffer before your return boat A “30–45 minute boat ride” can easily occupy a much larger part of your morning. ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━ 🗺️ 2. THE BIGGEST NUSA PENIDA MISTAKE: TRYING TO DO EAST + WEST IN ONE DAY This is probably the most important thing to understand. Many of Nusa Penida’s famous attractions are concentrated around two different sightseeing areas. 🌊 WEST NUSA PENIDA 🦖 Kelingking Beach Probably THE iconic Nusa Penida view — the famous T-Rex-shaped coastline. 💎 Crystal Bay Popular for swimming, sunsets and snorkeling/diving. 🌊 Broken Beach A spectacular natural rock arch surrounding a circular cove. 💦 Angel’s Billabong A natural infinity-pool-like formation beside the ocean. 🌅 EAST NUSA PENIDA 💎 Diamond Beach One of the most spectacular beaches on the island. 🌴 Atuh Beach A beautiful bay surrounded by dramatic cliffs and rock formations. 🏡 Rumah Pohon Tree House / Thousand Islands Viewpoint area Famous for panoramic coastal views. 💡 MY ADVICE: If you only have ONE DAY, choose East OR West. Trying to properly experience both can turn your dream island day into: car → photo → car → photo → car → panic about the boat. 😅 ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━ ⏰ 3. IF YOU ONLY HAVE ONE DAY My ideal structure would be: EARLY MORNING 🚤 Fast boat from Bali MORNING 🎒 Start your chosen East or West route LUNCH 🍽️ Proper food + hydration break AFTERNOON 🌿 Continue exploring without trying to add ten extra stops BEFORE THE BOAT 💦 Relax somewhere near the harbour LATE AFTERNOON / EVENING 🚤 Return to Bali The most important word here is: BUFFER. Do not plan your final viewpoint so tightly that you spend the drive back wondering whether you’re about to miss your boat. ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━ 🛵 4. SCOOTER OR DRIVER? This is one place where I wouldn’t automatically assume renting a scooter is the best option just because you ride one elsewhere in Bali. Nusa Penida has improved considerably, but you can still encounter narrow, steep and uneven roads. If you’re not a very confident rider, hire a driver. You’ll also spend less mental energy navigating and more time actually looking at the island. For a group of two or more people, a private car can make even more sense. ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━ 🤿 5. DON’T FORGET THE WORLD UNDER THE WATER Nusa Penida isn’t only about those famous cliff photos. It’s also one of Bali’s major snorkeling and diving destinations. Common snorkeling areas include: 🐠 Crystal Bay 🌊 Gamat Bay 💙 Toyapakeh 🐟 SD Point 🌊 Manta Point / Manta Bay areas And yes — manta rays are one of the biggest reasons people come here. But please remember: Wildlife sightings are never guaranteed. Choose responsible operators, keep your distance from marine animals and never treat wildlife encounters like an attraction that owes you a photograph. ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━ 🐟 6. AND THEN THERE’S MOLA MOLA If you’re visiting during the cooler-water season, roughly July–October, Nusa Penida is also famous among divers for encounters with the extraordinary ocean sunfish — mola mola. They’re enormous, bizarre-looking and absolutely fascinating. But this is primarily a diving experience, not something I would plan a casual snorkeling trip around. Currents around Nusa Penida can also be very strong, so choose reputable dive operators and be realistic about your experience level. ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━ 🌊 7. BEAUTIFUL WATER DOES NOT ALWAYS MEAN SAFE WATER This deserves its own section. Nusa Penida’s coastline can look impossibly inviting from above while conditions below are very different. Strong currents, waves and changing tides are part of this environment. ⚠️ Never assume a beach is safe for swimming simply because other tourists are standing near the water. Pay attention to local warnings and conditions that day. And if the ocean looks rough? The photo is enough. ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━ 👟 8. WHAT TO WEAR This isn’t the day I’d choose purely aesthetic vacation shoes. 😄 Bring: 👟 comfortable shoes with grip 🧢 hat 🕶️ sunglasses 🧴 sunscreen 👙 swimsuit 👕 something light to cover your shoulders 💧 plenty of water If you’re planning to descend toward beaches, remember: going down is the easy part. You still have to climb back up. In tropical heat. ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━ 💵 9. BRING SOME CASH Don’t rely completely on cards. Cash can be useful for: · small entrance fees · parking · local warungs · drinks/snacks · small purchases · unexpected expenses And keep smaller denominations with you. ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━ 💦 10. MY FAVORITE LOGISTICS HACK: SAVE YOUR RELAXING STOP FOR THE PORT AREA This is one of those little decisions that can make a day much easier. Instead of finishing sightseeing early and then sitting around waiting for your boat, plan your final meal/drink/swim close to the harbour. We used Maruti Beach Club, which is within walking distance of the port area. That means: 🌴 pool 🍽️ food 🥤 drinks 💦 shower/refreshing break depending on available facilities ⚓ harbour nearby …instead of spending that final chunk of time simply waiting around. Just leave enough time to walk back and complete boarding procedures comfortably. This is exactly the kind of tiny logistics detail my Planner personality LOVES. 😄 ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━ 🌙 11. SHOULD YOU STAY OVERNIGHT? If your schedule allows it: YES. A day trip gives you a taste of Nusa Penida. Staying overnight gives you much more freedom. You can visit famous viewpoints earlier or later than the biggest day-trip crowds, explore at a slower pace and potentially divide East and West between different days. My ideal first trip? 2 DAYS / 1 NIGHT minimum. DAY 1: West Penida + sunset DAY 2: East Penida + return boat Add another day if snorkeling/diving is important to you. ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━ 📸 12. THE INSTAGRAM VS REALITY RULE Nusa Penida is breathtaking. But many of the photographs you’ve seen online hide: 🚗 driving time ☀️ heat 👥 crowds 🪜 stairs ⏳ queues 🥵 climbs back up 🌊 unpredictable ocean conditions None of this makes Penida less worth visiting. It simply means: come prepared for an adventure, not a photoshoot. And ironically, you’ll probably enjoy the photos much more. ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━ ❤️ MY FINAL VERDICT Is Nusa Penida worth it? Absolutely. But I wouldn’t treat it as another Bali attraction to tick off. Give it time. Choose fewer places. Respect the ocean. Leave room for delays. Stop for food. Drink water. Put the camera down occasionally. And if possible, stay overnight. Because this island somehow manages to activate almost every part of my travel personality: 😎 The Planner organizes the route. 🎒 The Explorer wants to see everything. 📸 The Photographer falls in love every five minutes. 🌿 The Nature Seeker is completely overwhelmed. 🍜 The Foodie eventually asks when we’re eating. #adventuretrips Took a break from posting because I went volcano hunting in Indonesia 🌋. Spent 2 weeks there this time! Besides Merapi and Agung which I've shot before, I finally got new shots of Rinjani on Lombok and Semeru in Central Java. Even though they're all volcanoes, each one seriously has its own vibe! · Pics 1-4: Mount Merapi 🌋 Got them framed with Prambanan and the waterfalls. As one of the most active volcanoes here, it looks so cool just constantly puffing out smoke. · Pics 5-8: Mount Rinjani 🌋 Spent 3 days and 2 nights hiking to the summit for this one. We started the final push at 1 AM—totally burned out by then! But seeing that first sunrise at 5 AM from the top, watching the volcano cast a triangular shadow over the clouds... honestly, worth every bit of exhaustion. · Pics 9-10: Mount Semeru 🌋 Went to Nepal Van Java village up there 3 years ago but luck wasn't on my side; the whole mountain was just fog. This time I stayed overnight in the village. A little expensive, but I’d do it again. 💙 Oneeighty° Bali costs IDR 700K per person, and I know that sounds like a lot for a pool day. But IDR 600K is redeemable for food and drinks, and you get around 4 hours to enjoy the place. So instead of paying IDR 700K just to get in, you can spend most of it on lunch, drinks, and enjoying the pool. The view is honestly the best part — that glass-bottom pool hanging over the cliff with the ocean right in front of you. 🌊 Would I recommend it? Definitely. Especially if you want to splurge a little and make your Bali trip extra memorable.

Some hotels are just a place to spend the night. Others are the reason you want to fly back to Bali all over again. Bulgari Resort Bali is definitely the latter. This time, I stayed in Uluwatu, right on the edge of a cliff overlooking the Indian Ocean. And yes — the place looks exactly like the photos: private villas, lush tropical greenery, the ocean, and a sense of being completely disconnected from the world. 🏡 Villa — from 300 m² There are no standard rooms here — only massive villas, each with its own private pool. After check-in, our butler drove us to the bar, where we were invited to choose a welcome drink from the menu. Since I was there to celebrate my birthday, the hotel prepared a small surprise: a Bulgari cake and a signature luggage tag 🎂 It's a small gesture, but those are the details that make a stay special. 🏊 The Highlight — The Private Pool The best part about these villas is that you don't have to go anywhere at all. Il Ristorante specializes in contemporary Italian cuisine. The interior, service, and atmosphere are all top-notch. However, the food itself felt somewhat ordinary to me. Honestly, I expected more. On the other hand, the chocolate cake they gave me for my birthday was excellent 🍫 ✨ My Verdict Bulgari Resort Bali isn’t the kind of hotel you go to for a packed itinerary. If you’re exploring Ubud, there’s one place you’ll probably come across without even planning it — Ubud Palace, also known as Puri Saren Agung. Located right in the heart of Ubud, this beautiful palace was once the residence of the Ubud royal family. And unlike many historical sites that feel like museums, Ubud Palace is still connected to the royal family and remains an important part of the cultural life of the city. The palace dates back to the 19th century and has played an important role in Ubud’s development as a center of Balinese art, culture and tradition. What immediately caught my attention was the architecture. The entrance is covered in incredibly detailed stone carvings, traditional Balinese ornaments and statues, with beautiful courtyards and pavilions inside. There are so many small details that you can easily spend time just walking around and looking at the craftsmanship. And if you’re wondering whether it’s worth visiting — I’d say yes, especially because you don’t need to make a special trip to get here. Ubud Palace is right in the city center, directly opposite Ubud Art Market, so you can easily combine the two. 📍 How to plan your visit Location: Jl. Raya Ubud No. 8, Ubud, Gianyar, Bali. If you’re staying somewhere in central Ubud, you can easily walk here. From areas farther away, such as Canggu, Seminyak or Kuta, a taxi, scooter or private driver is the easiest option. Just keep in mind that traffic around Ubud can get quite busy. Opening hours: Usually around 7:00 AM–5:00 PM, although hours can change because of ceremonies or special events. The daytime visit is generally free, which makes it an especially easy stop to add to your itinerary. But there’s another reason to come back in the evening… Ubud Palace is also one of the places where you can watch traditional Balinese dance performances accompanied by live gamelan music. The performances take place in the palace courtyard, surrounded by all the traditional architecture, so the atmosphere is completely different from visiting during the day. 🌿 What to combine it with Because everything is so close, you can easily make this part of a full Ubud day: Ubud Palace → Ubud Art Market → Saraswati Temple → cafés/restaurants → Campuhan Ridge Walk And if you have more time, continue outside the center toward rice terraces, waterfalls or other Ubud attractions. One thing to remember: even though Ubud Palace is a popular tourist attraction, it is still a culturally significant place. Dress respectfully, stay in the areas open to visitors and remember that some parts of the palace are private. So, would I travel across Bali just to visit Ubud Palace? Probably not. But if you’re already in Ubud — 100% add it to your itinerary. 📅 **Itinerary** Day 1: Today, we’re exploring Downtown Ubud. I skipped the Monkey Forest because, personally, I’m not the biggest fan of monkeys... so I just focused on walking around and eating! I arrived late in the afternoon, so I hit up a local spot and wandered through the night market. The restaurant scene here is so lively! I’ll drop the names at the end!! Day 2: Walked over to Ubud Palace (free entry). It’s not very big; you can see the whole thing in about 15 minutes. Just a bit further is Saraswati Temple—it's stunning, don't miss it! The temple provides a uniform for everyone to wear, which actually looks pretty chic!! (Entry fee is around 120-130 THB, depending on the exchange rate). Afterward, I hit the market next door. TONS of clothes and souvenirs. The market has a great artistic vibe with plenty of artwork to see, but don’t forget to bargain! Day 3: Rent a scooter or a car with a driver, but if you're a confident rider, a scooter is the easiest way to get around. It's about 10 kilometers from Ubud (rented mine for only 200 THB for the day). First stop: Tegenungan Waterfall (Entry 60 THB). Be prepared for a lot of stairs; it’s quite a workout! But the waterfall area is spacious with several cafes, including Omma Cafe, which has an infinity pool overlooking the falls. So relaxing! Then, I headed to the second waterfall about 10km away: Kanto Lampo Waterfall. This place is gorgeous—lush greenery and a waterfall that looks like a curtain. The photos come out looking incredible! (Entry 50 THB) 🏨 **Recommended Stay**: I stayed at Desak Putra Homestay. The price is great (around 300+ THB), and the breakfast is fantastic—the pancakes are delicious! The owner and staff are lovely!! 🍴 **Recommended Eats**: Sun-Sun Warung and Compound Warung (Highly recommend these two; great prices and delicious). For other meals, I just stuck to the hotel breakfast and casual street food. 📌 **Pro-Tips**: For those who enjoy a cold beer, the prices in restaurants aren't much different from minimarts. However, if you buy from a small local grocery store, ask for the price first—it should be around 40,000 - 45,000 IDR. Most hotels don't provide free drinking water, and prices vary by shop, starting at around 3,000 IDR. Also, check the menu prices at roadside stalls before you sit down; I encountered some that cost as much as a fancy restaurant!

It's only about 10km away—close enough for an easy day trip, but far enough that the pace of things changes almost as soon as you arrive. Most people come to Tegallalang for the famous rice terraces, and they're worth seeing, but the terraces are really just the introduction. Stick around a little longer and the village itself becomes the real draw: narrow lanes between paddies, wooden bungalows tucked right into the greenery, and a pace of life that doesn't seem to have sped up for tourism the way parts of Ubud have. Stay somewhere like a bungalow set right in the middle of the fields rather than a hotel on the main road, and mornings start with birdsong instead of traffic. Spend part of the day at the local market. It's small, unpolished, and mostly serves the village itself rather than visitors, which gives you a far more honest look at daily life here than anything set up for photos. Evenings are when Tegallalang really shows off. Head out toward the paddies as the light starts to drop and you'll catch a sunset that spreads gold and pink across the whole sky, silhouetting palm trees and the rooftops of village houses below. It's a completely different rhythm from sunset spots built for crowds—usually just you, the fields, and whoever else lives nearby. If you time it right, you'll catch the harvest itself: farmers in conical hats working the fields by hand, threshing grain onto tarps laid across the stubble, and ducks let loose into the flooded paddies afterward to pick through what's left behind. Watch long enough and you'll notice the birds too, drawn to the same fields for the same reason the ducks are there. Tegallalang won't give you the dramatic bragging-rights photo Ubud's terraces do in the same five minutes. #underratedspots One of the most underrated things to do in Dili costs exactly 25 US cents. Not $2.50. Not $25. $0.25!!! And during our stay in Dili, the capital of Timor-Leste, we used these tiny local buses — called microlets — for almost all our everyday transportation. They are not a tourist attraction. There is no sightseeing commentary, no air-conditioning, no booking app and sometimes not even an obvious place where you are supposed to wait. And that is exactly why I loved them. This is everyday Dili. The city currently has 13 numbered microlet routes, connecting different parts of the capital. The vehicles are small, brightly painted minibuses, often decorated by their drivers, and each route follows its own regular circuit through the city. The most surprising part? 💰 The standard fare is only $0.25 per ride, regardless of the distance you travel on that route. Timor-Leste uses the US dollar, alongside locally issued centavo coins, so keeping a few small coins in your pocket makes travelling incredibly easy. And the whole system works very differently from public transportation in many other capitals. There are basically no traditional bus stops. You first work out which numbered microlet follows the road you need. Then you simply stand somewhere along its route. When you see your microlet coming… 👋 wave it down. If there is room, the driver slows down and you jump in. No ticket machine. No transport card. No QR code. No app. No complicated registration. Just get in. And getting OFF is even more interesting. There usually isn’t a stop button. Instead, when you are approaching your destination, you take a coin and tap it against the metal handrail inside the microlet. 🔔 That little metallic sound is your request to stop. The driver pulls over, you get out and pay your 25 cents. Once we understood this system, travelling around Dili became surprisingly simple — and honestly, much more fun than taking taxis everywhere. There is another important thing to understand: microlets have fixed routes, but they don’t have fixed timetables. You don’t check whether the next one arrives at 10:12 or 10:27. You go to the road, wait and catch the next one. They generally operate from early morning until around dusk, and they become noticeably busier around school and work commuting hours. So for tourists, I would primarily consider them a daytime transportation option. At night, a taxi is the more practical choice. And this brings me to the financial side. 💰 DILI TRANSPORT BUDGET One microlet ride: $0.25 Two people: $0.50 Four rides during the day for one person: $1 Four rides each for two travelers: $2 total Even if you make six separate trips in one day, your transportation bill is only $1.50 per person. Compare that with taking taxis for every short journey and the difference becomes huge, especially if you’re travelling for several days. For backpackers and budget travelers, this might be one of the easiest ways to keep costs down in Dili. But I actually think the bigger reason to try a microlet isn’t the money. It is the experience. You sit alongside people going to work, students heading home, families carrying their shopping and residents simply moving through their city. You start noticing neighborhoods rather than jumping from tourist attraction to tourist attraction. You see streets you probably wouldn’t deliberately visit. And because the vehicles are tiny, the whole experience feels far more connected to everyday life than riding inside a private taxi. For me, this is exactly what makes Timor-Leste such an underrated destination. Tourism here still feels remarkably small-scale compared with neighboring Bali or other parts of Southeast Asia. Many everyday experiences haven’t been repackaged into something designed specifically for visitors. Sometimes the memorable experience really is just figuring out how to get across town for twenty-five cents. And perhaps most importantly: don’t be intimidated by the system. The first ride feels confusing because there aren’t all the structures we associate with buses — stops, electronic signs, schedules, ticket machines. After one or two rides, it suddenly makes sense. We ended up using microlets during almost our entire time in Dili, and for $0.25 per ride, they became both our cheapest transportation option and one of the most authentic little memories from Timor-Leste. Sometimes an underrated spot isn’t a famous viewpoint or hidden beach. There was a lot of space, which made the journey especially comfortable. On a nearly empty plane, the whole experience felt calm and relaxed. That’s the funny thing. Even though you may need to wait, the final result can still look stunning — dramatic water, lush jungle vibes, and that iconic Bali shot everyone wants. So the place is a bit of a production… but the photos? Still very much worth talking about. 📸💦 What happens in reality: · you arrive at the waterfall · you realize this is not exactly a hidden secret anymore · there may be a line for the iconic photo point · local photographers help people pose and get the best angle · a few minutes later, it somehow looks like you were alone in the jungle the whole time 😂 And honestly, I kind of respect the system. Expect to get wet This is not a “stay cute and dry” type of stop. You will probably be standing in water for the best shots. 3. Wear something photo-friendly If you’re going there partly for pictures, think about an outfit that will stand out nicely against the rocks and waterfall. 4. Be careful on the rocks They can be slippery, so don’t rush just because your turn has come. 5. Bring a waterproof pouch Especially if you’re taking your own phone down close to the water. 6. Enjoying breakfast on a beautiful floating tray in the resort’s pool, surrounded by lush jungle, felt like the ultimate Bali escape. With nothing but tropical greenery and the peaceful atmosphere around me, even a simple breakfast felt incredibly special. We shared a plate of mie goreng, one of Bali’s classic dishes, along with fluffy pancakes. Enjoying both savory and sweet dishes while floating in the pool made the morning even more memorable. The combination of the crystal-clear pool, jungle scenery, and beautifully arranged breakfast created such a dreamy setting. It was one of those moments when I completely forgot about the outside world and simply enjoyed being there.
