I drove this route in early October, renting a car in Hami and heading north. The road climbs gradually, leaving the desert behind and entering a high-altitude steppe. The temperature dropped ten degrees in an hour. The poplars here are different from those in the south. They grow in small groups, often near seasonal streams or springs. Their leaves were just turning—still mostly green, with edges of gold. When the sun set behind the Barkol Mountains, the trees seemed to glow from within. I stopped at a pullout and walked into the grassland. A herd of horses grazed nearby, ignoring me completely. The only sounds were wind and the distant bark of a dog. As the light faded, I realized I had the entire landscape to myself. No other cars, no other photographers, no one. Just me, the poplars, and the approaching night. Public transport is very limited, so you'll mostly need to charter a car or drive yourself. You'll spend 3–4 hours in the car a day, leaving you sore and tired, with very little actual sightseeing time. For novice drivers, the crosswinds in the Gobi Desert are strong and exhausting to navigate. ▪️ Extreme climate, it's like a blind box experience 🥵 In summer, daytime temperatures in the city can hit 40°C, and surface temperatures in the Gobi are extremely high, making it impossible to stay outdoors at noon. The air is incredibly dry, which can easily cause nosebleeds and chapped lips. The temperature difference between day and night is 20°C+. You'll need short sleeves during the day and a windbreaker in the evening, so pack a full range of clothing. Occasionally, you might encounter strong winds and sandstorms, leaving you with a mouthful of sand. ▪️ No signal in some areas and limited facilities You'll lose phone service deep in the Dahaidao Yardang landforms, so be sure to download offline maps in advance.
