Batumi is home to the Cathedral of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary, an active Orthodox church with a style that is quite uncharacteristic for Orthodox architecture. The cathedral has a fascinating history. Built at the very beginning of the 20th century, it was originally a Catholic church. It was constructed from white stone in a Neo-Gothic style by Italian architects. During the Soviet era, as was common at the time, the church was repurposed and used as an archive. At one point, there were even plans to demolish it, but public activists stepped in to save the building. In the 1980s, the cathedral was handed over to the Georgian Orthodox Church. It remains an active Orthodox church to this day. Since 2011, it has been officially listed as a cultural heritage site in Batumi! The church features absolutely stunning stained glass windows, and I just couldn't resist snapping a few photos. The cathedral grounds also include a lovely little garden where various beautiful plants thrive all year round!

In this article, I'll explain how to get from Tbilisi to Batumi. I'll explain why it's better to travel by train. Georgia is a small country; you can travel the entire country by car or train in one day. If you want to get from Georgia's capital to Batumi on the Black Sea coast, you have three options: Plane; Bus; Train. A plane ticket starts at 125 GEL. The flight takes 40 minutes. I don't understand the "benefit" of flying, spending three times as much (as by train or bus)? After all, you don't really save much time: you need to get to the airport, which is further from the city than the bus/train station; on top of that, you need to arrive early to check in, which increases travel time, and you'll be paying three times more. Buses depart regularly to Batumi several times a day from the Didube bus station. There's no need to buy tickets in advance; buses depart on schedule or as soon as the bus is full. A ticket costs 30 lari, and the journey time varies depending on traffic. On average, it takes 6 hours. The only amenities are stops to use the restroom or buy water or food. From my experience, the seats are uncomfortable, the bus is hot, and the stops don't always accommodate your natural desires. :) And finally, the third option is by train. The Tbilisi-Batumi train was truly amazing! Comfortable seats, air conditioning, snack and water vending machines, and a portable toilet. I'd especially like to point out that this is a high-speed train. The journey from Georgia's capital to the Black Sea coast takes 5 hours. The train makes only three stops. It departs from Tbilisi Railway Station, Station Square, 2, and arrives at Batumi Railway Station, Str. Odyssey Dimitriadi, 3. The train is double-decker, with first-class carriages available. Tickets are more expensive, but I didn't notice much of a difference compared to economy: instead of three seats in a row, first class has two. The carriages are clean, the seats are tidy, and there are brochures waiting for passengers. The carriage advertises Wi-Fi, but there wasn't any. :) An economy class ticket costs 38 lari (including tax). Tickets can be purchased at the ticket office or on the website. A comfortable journey with incredible views is guaranteed. :)

The architecture of Old Batumi deserves a separate article. The city combines many different styles: there are Eastern motifs, and after the Ottoman rule, parts of the city resemble old European streets. The architectural legacy of the Soviet era is also visible. I love the Old Town; I can wander through it for hours alone. I recommend everyone experience it :) Europe Square It's worth starting with the main attraction – Europe Square. Almost all the festivals are held here. In the summer, a fountain in the center of the square opens, and the surrounding buildings house restaurants and cafes with cozy verandas. The famous statue of Medea with the Golden Fleece is also here. Astronomical Clock Tower A hundred meters from the square is my favorite building – the Astronomical Clock Tower. Unfortunately, you can't go inside (although an observation deck would have been quite possible). Piazza Square This is a square with cafes and restaurants. The creators wanted to recreate the Venetian Square, and it turned out beautifully. The buildings are beautifully illuminated, and the floor is mosaic-tiled. At midday, the shutters on the top floor of the tower open, revealing a performance featuring mechanical figurines. The Streets of the Old Town The Old Town is very cozy, with numerous cafes and restaurants, souvenir shops, atmospheric bars, and nightclubs. Not all the buildings have been reconstructed, but this creates the unique atmosphere of a city steeped in history. At night, the Old Town sparkles with special colors. The fortress was built in the 6th century. It served a defensive purpose, as it was situated in a highly strategic location overlooking the merchant shipping routes. In this context, "Petra" translates to "rock" or "stone." Today, it operates as a museum where you can climb around the ruins and explore the remnants of a bygone civilization's daily life. Visiting the fortress is very kid-friendly. The entrance is equipped with an elevator, and all the paths leading up to it are modernized. When we visited, we even saw tourists with a stroller and a toddler. Admission is 8 GEL for adults and 1 GEL for children aged 6 to 16. The fortress is open from 10:00 AM to 6:00 PM. It's fascinating to walk through this ancient city and realize that a vibrant civilization once thrived here; there's even a preserved traditional shoti bread oven. The summit offers a fantastic view! You get a sweeping panorama of the entire coastline, and you can even see Batumi in the distance. How to Get There? You can drive there yourself—the fortress offers free parking. You can also take a taxi. A ride from downtown Batumi costs about 20 GEL. Alternatively, you can catch a bus from the main bus terminal or the "Batumi Church" stop. Final Thoughts Petra Fortress is a fantastic attraction, especially if you're a history buff. Unlike many abandoned cultural heritage sites, this one is fully equipped with tourist infrastructure. It features well-maintained walking paths and a large observation deck overlooking the Black Sea. The staff also offers guided tours (for 15 GEL) to walk you through the rich history of the fortress.

If you're tired of pebbles and want to find the best beach in Batumi, then the wooden Tsikhidziri Beach is for you. It's also known as the "Georgian Bali." How to get there? The beach is located 20 kilometers from Batumi. You can get there by car, taxi (~20 GEL), or any bus heading toward Kobuleti. The most convenient way is to get off at the Castello Mare stop and walk down through the banana grove. Or, like us, you can combine the two attractions and first visit Petra Fortress, then walk down to the wooden beach. About the beach The beaches in this area are very different from those in Batumi; they have finer pebbles, a rocky shore, and much cleaner and warmer water. The area is located closer to Ureki, where all the beaches have black magnetic sand. The black sand attracts more sun, and the water warms up faster. So, if you're vacationing in Batumi in May or early June, you should go to the wooden beach or Magniti Beach. The beach itself has a small waterfall—the source of a mountain river. The water is cool and very refreshing. The beach itself is a two-tiered wooden beach. Ideal for those who don't like lying on hard rocks or clinging sand :) But many prefer to lie on the shore. Bottom Line The beach is interesting, with beautiful cliffs, a waterfall, and a completely different color of water than on the Batumi coast. Batumi's sandy beach is in no way inferior to the beaches of Cyprus, and many even compare it to the beaches of Bali. That's why it's nicknamed "Georgian Bali" :)

Martvili Canyon is a large park offering walking trails and river routes where you can take a boat ride. How to get there? From Batumi, you can get there by car or taxi (~170 GEL). You can also take a group tour with locals. The canyons are located 150 kilometers from Batumi, so the journey is not quick. However, along the way, you can stop at Magniti Beach in Ureki and visit the waterfalls near the canyon itself. This way, you can combine several attractions in one day. About the Canyon Martvili Canyon is very popular with tourists and locals. The canyon consists of two river levels. Boats are used for rafting on the upper level, while the lower level offers a walk along specially equipped stairs and paths. Entrance fee for adults is 17 GEL. In addition to the entrance fee, you also pay for a river cruise—the most interesting part of this route. The boat ride costs 15 GEL. Several people share a boat; in our case, there were five tourists plus the skipper. More people are usually allowed in a boat. Each person is required to wear a life jacket, which is provided free of charge. The views in the canyon itself are magical: the water is a stunning turquoise color, the cliffs on the sides narrow and widen, and you'll encounter several waterfalls along the route. The route is 2 kilometers long. The water is calm, with no strong current. There are many school-age children in the boats, so if you're wondering whether to bring a child, it's possible :) After the boat ride, there's a walk through the lower part of the park. The stairs you descend are new and modern, with railings and fences throughout. The water is so clear you can see the fish swimming in it! Results The rafting was quite quick, the road was much longer :) BUT! Considering the views of the canyon, the thrill of the ride, and the walk through the entire park, we were more than satisfied! The experience was worth it! Moreover, on the way back, we stopped at a waterfall located near the canyons. We swam there and also ate at a local cafe, where they cooked us fresh fish! Oh, how beautiful and delicious Georgia is!

The grounds feature an observation deck with a stunning view of the Black Sea. Tsikhisdziri Wooden Beach Within walking distance of Petra Fortress, on the coast, lies an incredibly beautiful beach. The pebbles here are fine, the water is crystal clear, rocky mountains stand almost right up to the shore, and a waterfall cascades down from them. The beach features a wooden platform where you can comfortably sit back and enjoy the views of the Black Sea. Martvili Canyon A beautiful park where you can take a boat ride on the river between the cliffs, as well as walk along paved trails and visit the observation decks. Argo Observation Deck Argo is an observation deck that offers a panoramic view of the entire city of Batumi. There's a cafe on-site where you can grab a bite while enjoying a bird's-eye view of the city. Batumi Japanese Garden In the park along the Batumi promenade, there is a Japanese garden where all the pathways are designed in a traditional style, featuring bonsai trees and plants brought from Asia. Additionally, the park has a pond with koi fish. Ali and Nino A moving sculpture in Batumi and one of the most recognizable symbols of the city. It's located on the promenade of the Old Town. Ferris Wheel Near the "Ali and Nino" sculpture is a Ferris wheel that offers a very beautiful view of all of Batumi. The entrance fee is 15 GEL, and the best views, in my opinion, are during sunset :) Zoo in May 6 Park There is a free zoo in May 6 Park featuring a variety of animals: deer, a zebra, ponies, monkeys, and many birds! Besides the zoo, you can feed bread to the ducks and the omnipresent seagulls at the park's lake. You can even spot turtles in the lake! Airport Viewpoint On the promenade, right by the airport, there is an unofficial viewing spot where planes come in for a landing and take off very low, literally right over your head! It's always packed with tourists here. Track the arrival and departure boards on the Batumi airport website in advance to grab the most Instagrammable spots :) Casinos in Batumi Casinos are legalized in Batumi. There are many places in the city where you can play. The mountains, the sea, and Batumi right in the palm of your hand... we spent an entire day at the Botanical Garden. Such peace and tranquility.
