Last spring, we had the chance to travel to Kyushu. As onsen enthusiasts who have long heard of Beppu's stellar reputation, we knew we had to visit at least once in our lives. For this trip, we rented a car and drove ourselves. Heading southeast from Fukuoka City for about 145 kilometers, we finally arrived in Beppu. Our first stop was Umi Jigoku. Because the water in this pond is as bright blue as the ocean, it earned the name "Umi," which means sea in Japanese. We personally think this is the most beautiful of all the hell ponds. Walking just a bit further near the blue pond, you'll find a red mud pond. Right next to it is a free foot bath. The water is extremely hot, but after soaking for a while, it does wonders for relieving muscle aches. This arcade shopping street exudes a nostalgic Showa-era charm and is famous for its giant Tengu (a Japanese mythical creature) mask on display. Erected in 1973 (Showa 48), this Tengu was originally enshrined as a guardian deity to protect the shopping street from fires. Lining this pedestrian street are numerous long-established shops, restaurants, classic cafes, and izakayas (Japanese pubs). It's just a 3 to 5-minute walk from the East Exit of JR Beppu Station.

Taking a stroll down "Yayoi Shopping Street" near the East Exit, I finally laid eyes on the legendary giant Tengu! This towering, red-faced Tengu mikoshi (portable shrine) is typically displayed right in the middle of the arcade. Seeing its incredibly long nose and piercing gaze in person is truly striking. I learned that it serves not only as the shopping arcade's guardian deity against fires and disasters, but it also takes to the streets as a massive float weighing hundreds of kilograms during the annual Beppu Onsen Festival parade. The most fascinating part? If you walk around to the back of the Tengu's head, you'll discover a hidden feature where you can pray for good health and protection from illness! A Japanese onsen isn't just a bathhouse, it's a whole ritual and one of my favorite parts of traveling in Japan 🥹 Especially after long walks – there's simply no better way to relax your body. But there's a catch: onsen have very strict rules, and if you don't know them, you could find yourself in an awkward situation (or even not be allowed in at all). Save this cheat sheet before your trip 👇 ▪️ Onsen = a hot spring with natural mineral water from underground. They are often located in incredibly beautiful places – forests, mountains, with views of a river or Mount Fuji. ▪️ You must enter a public onsen completely naked – swimsuits are prohibited. Before bathing, you must thoroughly wash yourself in the shower area. ▪️ Onsen are almost always separated by gender. If you feel uncomfortable going to a public onsen, book a private onsen. ▪️ Tattoos are a big problem 🚫 You can't enter many onsen with them. The famous "Hells of Beppu", ryokans, hot springs, and a deep Japanese countryside atmosphere. Plus, there are tattoo-friendly onsens! 👀 🎶 Otaru A charming town near Sapporo. An incredibly cozy spot with cute cafes, souvenir shops, a European vibe, and the Music Box Museum. 🐻 Noboribetsu One of the most impressive places in Hokkaido. The Martian landscapes of "Hell Valley", the best tattoo-friendly onsen, and a volcanic crater lake 🌋 🎃 Naoshima A true museum island. Art is literally built into nature: museums, installations, and a very special vibe. The perfect 1–2 day trip from Osaka. ⛩️ Hiraizumi A small town with some of the most beautiful temples I’ve ever seen. They don't take reservations, so you have to walk in directly. I went there for dinner and there was quite a long line. Waited about 20 minutes to get a seat. ⁡ ✤ Special Tempura Bowl (Tokujo Tendon) - 2 Shrimp It was my first time seeing shrimp tempura with "wings" (extra crispy batter)! I thought the extra batter would be greasy, but it actually had a crispy, snack-like texture. The shrimp were also quite large.
