Germany Rugen Sellin Pier to Binz Granitz Hunting Lodge Beech Forest Sea — €9 Castle or Free Pier?
On Rügen I based in Sellin, walked its 370 m pier (free, painted white with a tea pavilion midway) at 6:45 am—sea fog over the Baltic, no crowd. Then I rode the historic Rasender Roland steam train (€2.50, cash or card) one stop to Binz, and from Binz took the 2 km signed forest footpath southwest to Jagdschloss Granitz (Granitz Hunting Lodge). Entry is €9 adult (card accepted), 154 spiral stairs to a 144 m tower with a 360° view over beech forest to the sea.The path itself is the gem: shaded red-earth track through dense buchenwald, with the lodge appearing suddenly like a Grimm illustration. I skipped the interior (taxidermy and antler halls, not my thing) and only paid for the tower—still €9, no partial ticket, so know that going in. Mistake: I drove to the lodge parking once (€4) and missed the forest walk entirely; the footpath from Binz is the point. Combined Sellin→Binz→Granitz→Binz→Sellin is 12 km if you walk both legs, 4 hours with stops. Pack a pretzel; the lodge beer garden is €3.50 for a Radler. Worth it? Yes if you like 19th-century hunting architecture fused with primal beech forest—the sea glimpse from the tower ties it together. If you only want beach, skip Granitz. Discussion: is a €9 tower climb inside a forest castle worth more than a second pier walk along the Rügen shore?

Germany Rugen Island: Cape Arkona to Prora Nazi Holiday Resort Colossal Ruins — Two Extremes on One
#worthitornot Rügen is touristy seaside Germany, but two sites on its north-south axis pulled me in opposite directions. Cape Arkona: I took the RB bus from Bergen to Putgarten (€2.80, Deutschlandticket valid), then the horse-drawn cart or 1.5 km walk to the Jaromarsburg cliff edge. Up there are two brick lighthouse towers and a WWI/WWII coastal battery bunker cut into the red chalk cliff—free to view from outside, €4 to climb the Leuchtturm. Wind 40 km/h, no rails on the cliff path, so keep kids leashed. Then I backtracked south to Prora, the 4.5 km-long Nazi "Kraft durch Freude" concrete holiday colossus built 1936–39 and never used. The Documentary Center inside one wing costs €12 (card ok), 90 minutes of excellent context; the rest of the slab is apartment blocks, a youth hostel, and a bare concrete corridor you can walk freely for free. I rented a bike in Binz (€13/day) and rode the 8 km beach path to Prora—flat, fast, seagulls. Mistake: I tried to combine Arkona and Prora in one afternoon by bus; Arkona needs 2 hours, Prora another 2.5, and the bus transfer via Sassnitz eats 50 minutes. Sleep in Binz. Worth it? Prora is unmissable for 20th-century architecture and the unease of walking a fascist resort that became East German barracks. Arkona's bunker is minor but the cliff itself is primeval. Question: does a 4.5 km empty concrete facade hit harder than a single preserved fort, or is scale just spectacle?
