Guernica is a city with a strong Basque culture, even within Spain. Beautiful red, green, and white flags can be seen here and there. Most of the city was destroyed in bombings during the Spanish Civil War, and many of the buildings were later rebuilt. The Basque Parliament is one of the few buildings that escaped the fire, and it features beautiful stained-glass windows with an oak tree motif. It is said to have originated from the time when the Declaration of Independence was made under an oak tree. The oak tree currently in the parliament building is several generations old, and the original is treasured nearby, surrounded by columns. The parliament building is still in use, formally, but the inside has been modernized, which surprised me! There are electronic voting buttons inside wooden boxes! There's also Picasso's Guernica mural, and although it's small, there's plenty to see! Olive oil and delicious wine are available at reasonable prices at the local supermarket. Now a cultural heritage site and a popular seaside promenade, the pier, also known as the Iron Pier, was built to address navigation issues in the Port of Bilbao, allowing larger vessels to access the river regardless of tidal conditions. Evaristo de Churruca Brunet designed this 800-meter-long pier, with the first 600 meters made of iron and the remaining 200 meters constructed from stone. Construction began in 1881 and was completed in 1887. The pier played a crucial role in the development of port activities in Bilbao, enabling large-tonnage ships to navigate under any tidal conditions. Today, the Iron Pier is part of Spain's national heritage and is managed by the Bilbao Port Authority. From the pier's lighthouse, visitors can enjoy views of the estuary and the Vizcaya Bridge.

It's a relic of Bilbao's industrial past, increasingly resembling a service city. For better or for worse, La Carola will forever remind us of where we came from. In front of the shipyard stands a pier for crossing the river. Every afternoon, Carola, a beautiful young woman from Deusto, takes a boat across the river to go to work at Plaza del Só. She has to cross the Yuzcarduna facility. Workers await their arrival, sounding the factory alarm to accompany them. In honor of this beautiful woman, they named the crane after her. The exterior features a strange hexagonal shape with almost no details. Inside, there are three rocks over 40,000 years old, defying gravity as they are joined together. The composition of these rocks is different from other stones in the area. It is said to be an ancient pagan power site converted into a church. Embedded in the stones is something resembling a used throne or seat. Next to the throne, right in the center, stands a figure of an angel or saint slaying a dragon—possibly a symbol of a dethroned ruler from pre-Christian times.

The main altarpiece is a magnificent work in the Mannerist style. The cemetery, connected to the church, is designed in a Neoclassical style, with a rectangular layout and cloisters.

Due to the central nave being taller than the side naves, the church's exterior appears slanted. The façade, located at the base of the church, showcases a variety of decorative styles. The church was originally built in the 12th century and was rebuilt in 1750. On the way to the Church of Our Lady of Antigua, you will also come across two beautiful hermitages: the Hermitage of San Juan and the Hermitage of Santa Clara, both accessible only on foot.
