The Nakasu-Kawabata area in Fukuoka is truly a hidden gem packed with izakayas and local delicacies! .
A friend working in Fukuoka brought me to his personal favorite spot, 【Kawano Soba】. Judging by the name, I initially thought it was just a ramen shop.
To my surprise, it's an incredibly versatile izakaya! From skewers and oden to pan-fried dumplings, crab meat omelets, beef tongue, and ramen—the menu is absolutely massive.
I specifically want to recommend this izakaya to my friends from Taiwan
because it has one huge perk:
There's no cover charge or mandatory appetizer fee (Otoshi), which Taiwanese visitors find the most confusing!
Plus, it's completely fine if you don't drink alcohol. It's a great spot just for dinner, and it's perfectly family-friendly.
Dishes like ramen, rice bowls, pan-fried dumplings, and crab meat omelets are guaranteed hits with kids.
(I loved them too, honestly, because I have the palate of a child! XDD)
🍢 You absolutely have to order their signature "Hakata Guru Kawa" (Hakata-style rolled chicken skin).
The chicken skin is tightly wrapped around a bamboo skewer layer by layer, then grilled until the outside is incredibly fragrant while the inside stays wonderfully chewy and juicy.
You can choose from salt, tare (sauce), or mentaiko mayo flavors. We ordered all three to try, and the mentaiko mayo was the most sinfully delicious—its rich flavor is incredibly addictive.
🦐 The salt-grilled giant prawn gets a quick blowtorch sear right before serving, which releases an amazing smoky aroma. The meat is firm, sweet, and served with a side of mayo. A single prawn is surprisingly filling!
🐮 The thick-cut beef tongue steak was another wonderful surprise.
Cut into thick, hearty slices, it's seared to a perfect crust on the outside while trapping the tender, juicy goodness inside. It has a great bouncy bite without being tough at all.
🥟 The pan-fried dumplings have a perfectly golden-crisp bottom and a thin wrapper with a soft, savory filling. They're best enjoyed while piping hot.
🍳 As for the crab meat omelet, I devoured two-thirds of it myself the moment it hit the table! The silky, thickened egg wraps beautifully around shredded crab meat, offering a sweet and savory flavor that pairs flawlessly with rice.
🍢 I was absolutely thrilled when I saw they served oden!
I’ve talked with a lot of friends before about how Taiwanese travelers really want to try authentic izakaya oden when visiting Japan but are intimidated by not knowing how to order specific ingredients.
【Kawano Soba】 solves this by preparing a Traditional Chinese menu! Even the skewer cuts and dish names are clearly written, making ordering completely stress-free.
For the oden, you can handpick your favorite items. The daikon radish, boiled eggs, and chikuwa (fish cakes) soak up the flavorful broth beautifully. Enjoying a bowl of warm, clear soup in the evening is just pure comfort.
🍜 Finally, wrap up the meal with a bowl of their New Chuka Soba.
Don't be fooled into thinking Hakata is only about heavy tonkotsu (pork bone) broth—I highly, highly recommend their white soy sauce broth!
It’s refreshing, not overly greasy, and perfectly seasoned. It’s genuinely a broth you’ll want to drink down to the very last drop~
If you're looking to challenge yourself to your very first Japanese izakaya experience, let
this 【Kawano Soba】 be your perfect starting point!
