🏔️ Crown of the Alps: Why Zermatt & the Iconic Matterhorn Belong on Every Travel Bucket List! 🇨🇭✨ Nestled at the foot of Europe’s most legendary pyramid peak, Zermatt is the quintessential alpine wonderland. Perched at 1,600 metres in the Valais canton, this car-free resort village seamlessly pairs historic timber chalets and cobblestone lanes with high-altitude adventures and Michelin-starred mountain dining. Towering above the skyline is the unmistakable, tooth-shaped silhouette of the Matterhorn (4,478 m). Whether visiting to hike alpine lakes, ride Europe’s highest cableways, or ski across international borders, Zermatt offers an unforgettable alpine escape year-round. 🚠 Top Experiences in Zermatt & the Matterhorn Ride the Gornergrat Cogwheel Railway: Board Europe’s oldest open-air electric cogwheel train from Zermatt station up to the Gornergrat ridge at 3,089 metres. The summit platform offers a 360-degree panorama of 29 peaks rising above 4,000 metres and the massive Gorner Glacier. Photograph the Reflection at Lake Riffelsee: Hop off the Gornergrat train at Rotenboden and take a gentle 10-minute walk down to Riffelsee. On calm, windless mornings, the lake surface creates a mirror reflection of the east face of the Matterhorn. Ascend to Matterhorn Glacier Paradise: Glide up on the Matterhorn Glacier Ride 3S cable car to Europe’s highest mountain station at 3,883 metres. Walk through carved ice caverns inside the Glacier Palace, step onto the 360-degree viewing platform overlooking three countries, and enjoy year-round summer glacier skiing. Trek the Five Lakes Trail (5-Seenweg): Beginning at Blauherd and descending toward Sunnegga, this classic 9.8-kilometre hiking trail passes Stellisee, Grindjisee, Grünsee, Moosjisee, and Leisee, each offering distinct viewpoints of the iconic peak. Stroll the Historic Hinterdorf Quarter: Wander through the preserved heart of Zermatt village, where over 30 traditional timber barns, storehouses, and chalets built between the 16th and 18th centuries stand elevated on round flat stones (Mäuseplatten) to deter rodents. 💡 Essential Travel Tips Best Time to Visit: Summer & Early Autumn (June–October): Best for clear alpine hiking trails, blooming meadows, and mountain biking. Winter (December–April): A premier winter sports hub offering 360 kilometres of interconnected ski pistes, including runs spanning across the border into Breuil-Cervinia, Italy. Car-Free Village Logistics: Private combustion cars are prohibited in Zermatt. Drivers must park at the massive terminal in Täsch and take the shuttle train (running every 20 minutes) into town. Within the village, get around on foot, by e-taxi, or via the green e-bus network. Getting There by Train: Take the SBB Swiss Federal Railways to Visp or Brig, then switch directly to the Matterhorn Gotthard Bahn (MGB) for the scenic valley climb into Zermatt. Altitude & Weather: Temperatures drop dramatically above 3,000 metres, even on sunny summer days. Dress in layers, carry a windproof outer shell, and use high-SPF sunscreen and UV-rated sunglasses due to intense alpine glare. #travel #naturalwonders #myitinerary #travel2026 #thingstodo #familytravel

#easytravelpost From Brig or Mörel, ride the cable car to Riederalp or Bettmeralp (car-free plateau, luggage cart at the station), then walk the “Aletsch Panoramaweg” toward Moosfluh / Eggishorn viewpoints. The mossy balcony path runs 8–10 km one way along the upper edge of the Aletsch forest, with the 23 km glacier uncoiling below you the whole time. No entry fee, but the cable car from Mörel to Riederalp is CHF 38 return (Half Fare CHF 19). I stayed overnight in Riederalp, walked out at 07:00 when the glacier glowed pink, and counted ibex on the opposite slope—binoculars essential, they’re flea-sized without. The path is wide, rooted, sometimes boardwalked over snow patches even in July. Aletschji hut sells rösti and apple juice (CHF 16, card ok). The UNESCO info panel at Moosfluh explains the glacier has lost 3 km of tongue since 1980—stand there long enough and you feel the loss in your knees. Mistake: doing it as a day trip from Zermatt—too much transit, you arrive at noon haze. Sleep on the plateau, walk at dawn. Another: wearing only a t-shirt; the balcony wind drops the felt temp by 10°C even in August. Discussion Point: When a glacier is visibly dying, does the panorama path become a mourning walk—or just a bigger “wow” because it’s disappearing?

Swiss Spring Lakes and Mountains · Simplified Snowmelt Hiking in May Route: Lucerne → Interlaken (Jungfrau Region) → Zermatt, 7 days Core Value: May is a limited spring window in Switzerland — low-altitude wildflowers bloom, waterfalls have the highest flow, tourists are only one-third of summer, and accommodation prices are halved. The trade-off: some high-altitude routes (like the Stellisee section of the Five Lakes hike) still have snow, so you need to choose routes carefully. Transportation: Seamless train travel throughout (the pinnacle of the Swiss transport system). Must buy the Half-Fare Card, 120 CHF/month, all trains/cable cars/boats at 50% off. Day 1 Arrive in Lucerne (stay in Lucerne) · Chapel Bridge + Water Tower: take reflections photos at dawn or dusk, free · Lion Monument: Mark Twain called it "the saddest stone carving in the world," free · Musegg Wall: open April to November, climb the tower for a city view, free · Optional: Swiss Museum of Transport (interactive, discount with Half-Fare Card) · Accommodation: hotel in the Old Town, ¥1,300–2,000 (30% cheaper than summer) Day 2 Lucerne · Queen of the Mountains (stay in Lucerne) · Mount Rigi: choose the Vitznau–Rigi cogwheel train (operates year-round, fully open in May). Summit at 1,798m, snow-free hiking trails, early alpine meadows turning green, overlooking 13 arms of Lake Lucerne · Classic route: boat one way, train the other (or vice versa), about 4 hours total · Cost: with Half-Fare Card, round trip about 35 CHF · Optional: Mount Pilatus (cogwheel train runs from May, steepest at 48%), but summit at 2,128m is colder with more snow, hiking experience less pleasant than Rigi Day 3 Lucerne → Interlaken (stay in Interlaken or Grindelwald) · Train: 1 hour 50 minutes, Lucerne–Interlaken segment is the highlight of the Golden Pass Line, right side window seats offer views of Lake Brienz · Afternoon: Lake Brienz boat cruise (2-hour round trip), snow-capped mountain reflections + lakeside towns. Half-Fare Card gets 50% off boat tickets · Accommodation: strongly recommend staying in Grindelwald (30 minutes by train), the dreamy slopes at dawn and dusk with no tourists are much better than Interlaken Day 4 Jungfrau · Spring Limited Routes (stay in Grindelwald) · Morning: First hike (open in May!) · Take cable car from Grindelwald to First (2,168m) · Hike round trip to Bachalpsee Lake (2–3 hours, gentle and snow-free), early wildflowers bloom by the lake, reflecting Schreckhorn Peak · Cable car with Half-Fare Card about 31 CHF · Afternoon: Murren–Gryon Alpine hike (1,600m, snow melted in May) · Take cable car from Lauterbrunnen to Murren, hike down gently to Grimmelwald, snow mountains + waterfalls + wildflowers + chalets, classic Swiss scenery all included · This route is stroller-friendly, very easy, wildflower season starts in May · Optional: Schilthorn (cable car runs year-round), but summit requires heavy jackets ⚠️ Important tips for Jungfrau region in May: · Jungfrau summit (3,454m) is accessible year-round, but in May it is still icy with no hiking conditions, purely a photo and viewing platform · Männlichen–Kleine Scheidegg classic panoramic trail opens mid to late May depending on snow, check official website before going · With babies/elderly: Murren’s low-altitude routes are best, avoid Jungfrau summit (some visitors reported babies experiencing altitude sickness) Day 5 Interlaken → Zermatt (stay in Zermatt) · Transport: Interlaken–Spiez–Bern–Brig–Zermatt, about 3.5 hours, seamless train connections · Arrival: Zermatt bans motor vehicles, electric shuttle from station to hotel (10 CHF per ride) · Evening: stroll the town, watch the Matterhorn glow at sunset (classic photo spot is the cemetery in front of the church, resting place of mountaineering victims, please be respectful) · Accommodation: in Zermatt town, May prices are 30–40% lower than winter ski season Day 6 Zermatt · Five Lakes Hike · Can you hike in May? (stay in Zermatt) · Harsh truth: the core section of the Five Lakes Hike (5-Seen-Weg) at Stellisee Lake (2,537m) is completely snow-covered in May, trail closed · May alternatives: · Gornergrat viewpoint: cogwheel train runs year-round, 35 minutes to 3,089m, over 20 peaks above 4,000m + start of Aletsch Glacier, round trip with Half-Fare Card about 42 CHF. Summit viewpoint is snow-free but trails remain closed · Riffelsee Lake (2,757m): lake surface still frozen or partially thawed in May, reflection effect reduced, but blue ice scenery is a May exclusive · Low-altitude hikes: around Zermatt town (1,600m) snow melted, forest trails accessible · Mindset adjustment: in May, the focus in Zermatt is on the mountains, not the lakes. The Matterhorn’s triangular peak is stunning any season, no need to insist on reflections Day 7 Zermatt → Departure · Morning: Catholic church, mountaineers’ cemetery, forest playground (child-friendly) · Afternoon: Zermatt–Brig–Geneva Airport (about 3.5 hours), or –Zurich Airport (about 5 hours) 🎯 May Hiking Routes · Opening Checklist Route Elevation May Status Suitable For Mount Rigi Loop 1,300–1,800m ✅ Fully open, early wildflowers All First–Bachalpsee 2,100–2,300m ✅ Open Beginner hikers Murren–Gryon Alpine 1,600–1,800m ✅ Best season (wildflowers + waterfalls) Families/leisure Männlichen–Kleine Scheidegg 1,800–2,000m ⚠️ Opens mid-late May depending on snow Check official site Five Lakes Hike (Stellisee) 2,500m+ ❌ Snow closed until mid-late June Gornergrat Viewpoint 3,089m ✅ Train accessible, no hiking Pure sightseeing ❌ Don’t: · Expect reflections on the Five Lakes in Zermatt — May is blue ice season, not mirror season · Attempt to cross snow-covered trails — Swiss trail signs are excellent but above snowline is dangerous · Stay in Interlaken — unless you love tour buses ✅ Do: · Buy the Half-Fare Card — two train rides in May pay it off easily · Stay in Grindelwald — dreamy slopes in morning mist are worth the price · Bring a windbreaker — Alpine weather in May changes quickly, bring a light down jacket Budget reference (per person/Euros, low season in May): · Accommodation (6 nights): €420–840 (Swiss specialty: hostels from €60, 3-star hotels €120+) · Half-Fare Card: €24 (120 CHF) · Transport/cable cars: €150–200 (all 50% off) · Food: €280 (supermarket sandwiches + two proper meals/day) · Total: €900–1,300 People hiking in Switzerland in May are not there to conquer, but to have it all to themselves. No summer crowds, cable cars always available, snow still melting on lake surfaces, wildflowers just sprouting from brown earth. What you get is not a perfect Switzerland, but a Switzerland yet to be discovered by tourists.

📝 Scenic Route Review: The train ride from Brig to Zermatt is a captivating alpine journey that climbs from the Rhône Valley deep into the Swiss Alps, culminating in the iconic mountain village of Zermatt. Operated by the Matterhorn Gotthard Bahn, the ride takes just under 1.5 hours, but it delivers world-class views nearly every minute of the way. Departing from Brig, a town known for its historic Stockalper Palace, the train quickly ascends through narrow valleys, rushing rivers, pine forests, and dramatic rock faces. The Vispa River runs alongside much of the track, offering constant motion and contrast to the serene villages you’ll pass. Look out for the charming mountain hamlets of St. Niklaus, Randa, and Täsch, where chalets cling to steep slopes and church steeples rise above wooden rooftops. As the train winds higher, snow-capped peaks, glacial waterfalls, and stone bridges create postcard-worthy scenery. Near Zermatt, on clear days, the Matterhorn makes its first majestic appearance. 📍 Route Details: · Start: Brig · End: Zermatt · Train Line: Matterhorn Gotthard Bahn · Duration: ~1 hour 20 minutes · Frequency: Trains every 30 minutes · Train Type: Comfortable regional trains with large windows · Best Side for Views: Sit on the right-hand side when heading toward Zermatt #travel #Zermatt #visp #Brig #train #naturalwonders

#beyondborders Booked a super nice hotel for one night in Brig! If you are traveling Matterhorn but you feel the hotel price is expensive you can try to book hotel in Brig! The view is super good and I loved it! You can walk around the street in there. There are also different restaurants around. Most importantly, the hotel price is much cheaper! It’s also very close to Matterhorn! #beyondborders

❄️ River of Ice: Why the Great Aletsch Glacier Is the Crown Jewel of the Swiss Alps! Stretching over 20 kilometres across the Valais canton, the Great Aletsch Glacier (Grosser Aletschgletscher) is the largest and longest glacial ice stream in the Alps. Containing roughly 11 billion tons of ancient ice and plunging to depths of up to 800 metres at Konkordiaplatz, this frozen giant forms the centrepiece of the UNESCO World Heritage Swiss Alps Jungfrau-Aletsch region. Framing dramatic 4,000-metre peaks including the Jungfrau, Mönch, and Aletschhorn, the Aletsch Arena provides an awe-inspiring vantage point where travellers can stand at the edge of immense crevasses, hike through primeval pine forests, and witness the raw power of glaciated geology up close. 🏔️ Top Experiences at the Aletsch Glacier Take in 360° Panoramas from the View Points: The Aletsch Arena features three premier summits easily accessible by cable car: Eggishorn (2,869 m), offering the most complete view from the bend of the glacier all the way to Konkordiaplatz; Bettmerhorn (2,647 m), home to an interactive multimedia ice exhibition; and Moosfluh (2,333 m), placing you right beside the edge of the glacial moraine. Hike Through the Ancient Aletsch Forest (Aletschwald): Wander along the edge of the glacier through a protected nature reserve home to Switzerland’s oldest stone pine and larch trees—some dating back over 900 years. The contrast between ancient green pine needles, granite boulders, and white ice flows below is spectacular. Join a Guided Glacier Walk: Equip yourself with crampons and climbing harnesses to step directly onto the glacier's surface. Accompanied by certified local mountain guides, explore dazzling blue crevasses, glacial meltwater streams, and smooth ice tables safely. Hike the Ridge Trail from Bettmerhorn to Eggishorn: For sure-footed mountain trekkers, this panoramic ridge trail offers front-row views of the curving ice river throughout the route, passing rugged granite scrambles and sweeping viewpoints down into the Rhône Valley. Stay in Car-Free Alpine Villages: Base yourself in the tranquil, car-free plateau villages of Riederalp, Bettmeralp, or Fiescheralp, where traditional timber chalets, pristine mountain air, and silent walking trails replace traffic and city rush. 💡 Essential Travel Tips Best Time to Visit: Summer & Early Autumn (June–October): The optimal season for panoramic ridge hikes, guided glacier trekking tours, and flower-filled alpine meadows. Winter (December–April): The region transforms into the Aletsch Arena ski resort, allowing skiers and snowboarders to carve down groomed slopes with the glacier sparkling in the background. How to Get There: Take the Swiss Federal Railways (SBB) to Brig, then switch to the Matterhorn Gotthard Bahn (MGB) to reach the valley base stations of Mörel (for Riederalp), Betten Talstation (for Bettmeralp), or Fiesch (for Fiescheralp/Eggishorn). From the valley stations, scenic cable cars whi

Sightseeing in Milan, Italy 🇮🇹 Leaving Switzerland and returning to Milan, Italy, we passed through the Simplon Pass, viewing the snow-capped Alps up close once again. Milan is a global center for fashion and art, a world capital of design, a historic and cultural city, and one of Europe's four major economic hubs. Milan Cathedral is the world's largest Gothic cathedral, ranks among the world's five great cathedrals, and is where Napoleon held his coronation ceremony. Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II is located on the north side of Milan Cathedral and is one of the most luxurious shopping arcades in Europe. Sforza Castle is one of Milan's most important buildings and a witness to the city's long and storied history.

Rode the Glacier Express From Chur to Brig It lives up to its name as the world's slowest scenic train ⛰️ . St. Moritz → Zermatt We only experienced one section of the route this time The train passes through the Rhine Gorge Crosses the Oberalp Pass (elevation 2,033m) The mountain scenery keeps changing along the way 🌤️ . My favorite design feature! No need to go to the dining car to eat The seats come with super spacious individual dining tables 🍝 Enjoy dinner right at your seat, and it tastes pretty good ✨ . The dining car windows can be pulled down Perfect for capturing unobstructed views along the way The carriage also has a dedicated guestbook You can jot down your travel thoughts at any time ✍️

We stayed for a quick night in Brig while taking the Glacier Express, and we were pleasantly surprised by how comfortable this little town is! 📍 Location Brig is a small town in the Upper Valais region of southern Switzerland. It is nestled in the Rhône Valley at the foot of the Alps, right next to the Simplon Pass. 🚞 Transportation This is an important stop on the Glacier Express and a key transportation hub in southern Switzerland. It is very convenient for traveling to Zermatt, the Aletsch Glacier, and Domodossola, Italy. 🏘️ Authentic Old Town Experience It is a ten-minute walk from the train station to the old town. The streets are all cobblestone, which is very retro but can be a bit difficult with a suitcase. The town is small, and you can walk the main street in just a few steps. There are plenty of cafes, small supermarkets, and hotels along the street, giving it a very lively, local feel. German is the primary language for daily communication, but English is perfectly fine for simple tasks like ordering food or asking for directions. 🏰 City Landmark Stockalper Palace was built in the 17th century by a wealthy local salt merchant and features a classic Baroque style. Its iconic three towers and golden onion domes, along with the courtyard and arcades, are perfect for photos 📸. It currently serves as both a municipal office and a city museum, making it the most representative historical building in Brig. 🏨 Hotel Recommendation Hotel Stockalperhof Located right in the main square of the old town, next to the Church of St. Sebastian

During this trip to Switzerland, I experienced two famous scenic train routes: Luzern–Interlaken Express (GoldenPass Line) + Glacier Express If you already have a Swiss Travel Pass (STP), both fares are covered, so you don't need to buy separate tickets. However, the "reservation rules" for these two trains are very different. The Luzern–Interlaken Express does not require mandatory reservations, whereas the Glacier Express absolutely requires a paid reservation. ⸻ 💛 Luzern–Interlaken Express | Lakeside Views All the Way We took the route from Luzern to Interlaken Ost, a journey of about 1 hour and 50 minutes. I found this segment very comfortable. The scenery isn't the kind of breathtaking, high-altitude mountain landscape, but rather typical, therapeutic Swiss countryside. Outside the window, you'll see: ・Turquoise lakes ・Lush green hillsides and wooden chalets ・Waterfalls and rivers ・Quaint lakeside towns ・People strolling and sunbathing by the lake ・Residents enjoying their holidays on small boats The entire route passes through the Brünig Pass. Official guides say you can see five lakes along this stretch before finally entering Interlaken along Lake Brienz. Watching people walk and row by the lake really makes you think, "How is the daily life of the Swiss so leisurely?" 🎫 Should you reserve a seat on the GoldenPass? Reservations are not mandatory, but I recommend them during peak season. We happened to encounter a tour group this time, so even First Class was almost full, and the carriage was a bit lively 😂 For the 2026 peak season (May 2 – Nov 1), the reservation fee is CHF 16 per person; during the off-season, it’s CHF 12. We booked our seats directly through the official system in advance. If you care about having a window seat or don't want to search for a spot, I think it’s worth the money. ⸻ ❤️ Glacier Express | High Mountains and Canyon Landscapes The Glacier Express is completely different from the previous train. Reservations are mandatory! The STP covers the ticket price, but the reservation fee is not included. For 2026, the reservation fee for both first and second class is CHF 54 per person, and the official system currently allows bookings as early as 93 days before travel. We originally wanted to take a more complete route, but when we checked about two months in advance, many seats were already gone. We finally managed to book: Brig → Chur, a journey of about 4 hours. ⸻ 🏔️ What to see between Brig and Chur? Although this segment does not pass over the classic Landwasser Viaduct (which is on the route from Chur toward St. Moritz), it still features very important highlights of the Glacier Express. The most notable sights include: ・Andermatt ・Oberalp Pass ・Oberalpsee ・Rhine Gorge The train climbs to the highest point of the entire Glacier Express—the Oberalp Pass, at an altitude of 2,033 meters. Right next to it is the mountain lake, Oberalpsee. The train moves slowly along the high-altitude lake, offering a completely different view from the lakeside towns seen on the GoldenPass. The latter part passes through the Rhine Gorge, with white cliffs sandwiching the turquoise Rhine River. Also known as the "Grand Canyon of Switzerland," this was a highlight I really looked forward to on the Brig → Chur segment. ⸻ 📌 Key Booking Points for Both Scenic Trains Luzern–Interlaken Express ・Fare covered by STP ・Seat reservations optional ・2026 peak season reservation fee: CHF 16/person ・Recommended for peak times or window seats ・Luzern → Interlaken is approx. 1h 50m Glacier Express ・Fare covered by STP ・Mandatory reservation ・2026 1st/2nd class reservation fee: CHF 54/person ・Reservations open 93 days in advance ・Popular dates must be booked as early as possible 💭 Personal Reflections The two trips offer completely different vibes. The Luzern–Interlaken Express feels like sitting in front of a giant picture window watching lakes, green slopes, and Swiss towns glide by—very relaxing and healing. The Glacier Express has a much stronger high-mountain feel, showcasing valleys, passes, alpine lakes, and canyons. The experience of the train climbing to 2,033 meters is quite significant. Although it was a pity we didn't get to ride the Landwasser Viaduct segment this time, the Oberalp Pass, Oberalpsee, and Rhine Gorge still made the Brig → Chur segment very worthwhile. If you already have an STP, I think arranging scenic trains for long-distance travel days is a great deal—the travel time itself becomes the attraction. 🚆🏔️

Between the Swiss canton of Valais and the Bernese Oberland lies an icy dragon stretching across the mountains: the Aletsch Glacier. It extends south from the northern slopes of the Jungfrau, Mönch, and Eiger peaks, spanning about 23 kilometers in length, with an average width of 1,500 meters and a maximum depth of 900 meters. With a total weight of approximately 2.7 billion tons, it is the largest and longest glacier in the Alps. In 2001, the Jungfrau-Aletsch-Bietschhorn region was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List, becoming the first natural site in the Alps to receive this honor. The best way to view the Aletsch Glacier is to ascend one of its three observation points. The Eggishorn, at an altitude of 2,869 meters, is known as the "Swiss Ice Palace." Standing here, you can see the glacier like a silver dragon drawing a massive S-curve through the valley, winding between snow-capped peaks. In your field of view, the Jungfrau, Mönch, Eiger, and Matterhorn peaks line up, making every snapshot look like a postcard. Additionally, the Bettmerhorn and Moosfluh observation points offer their own unique perspectives. Three cable car routes can transport you into this world of ice and snow: from Fiesch to Eggishorn, from Betten to Bettmerhorn, and from Mörel to Moosfluh. The three car-free villages on the mountainside—Riederalp, Bettmeralp, and Fiescheralp—preserve the purest Alpine charm. You can hike along the edge of the glacier for hours, stop by Lake Märjelen, or overlook the entire glacier from the Sphinx Observatory at an altitude of 3,500 meters. However, this icy dragon, formed over millions of years, is melting at an alarming rate. Over the past 40 years, the Aletsch Glacier has retreated by more than 1,300 meters. Scientists warn that if greenhouse gas emissions continue, it could disappear completely before 2100. While the glacier is still here, go see it. Standing before it, you will understand what it means to be truly awestruck. Switzerland: Aletsch Glacier Address: Jungfrau-Aletsch World Heritage Site, Valais, Switzerland Transportation: Take a train from Brig or Visp to Fiesch, Betten, or Mörel, then transfer to a cable car to ascend the mountain

The morning I woke up in Riederalp, I was awakened by an indescribable force—not an alarm clock, but the soft, pinkish light filtering in from outside the window. In this car-free mountain village at an altitude of 1,900 meters, there is no traffic noise, only the rustling of wind through the pine forest. The moment I pushed open the wooden window, the crisp, cold air rushed in, and the silhouettes of the distant snow-capped mountains gradually became clear in the morning light. 🚠 A sky-high viewpoint Take the cable car from the village up to the Moosfluh viewpoint (altitude 2,333 meters). As the cable car slowly ascends, the valley unfolds beneath your feet, and the small wooden cabins of the village get smaller and smaller. Upon arriving at the viewpoint, the Aletsch Glacier—the largest glacier in Europe, spanning 23 kilometers, and a UNESCO World Heritage site—lies quietly before your eyes. ✨ The moment the morning glow paints the glacier At first, there was only a line of orange-pink on the horizon. Gradually, the golden morning light began to kiss the ice—not with a passionate embrace, but with a gentle, tentative touch. The blue-and-white surface of the glacier was gradually dyed a faint pink, like the blush on a young girl's cheeks. The surrounding 4,000-meter-class snow-capped mountains lined up, layered in colors from deep blue to light purple to pinkish gold. At that moment, the world was so quiet that only my own breathing remained. Some say that standing there, you can feel the heartbeat of the Earth. I would say that standing there, you can also see the Earth at its most gentle. The sunrise in Riederalp is a beauty that no single photo can capture. It is the kind of tranquil moment that makes you automatically slow your breathing and linger for a long time. If you also dream of a morning like this, don't hesitate—just come 🌄 🗺️ Practical information Transportation: Brig → Train to Mörel (approx. 30 mins) → Cable car to Riederalp Best time for sunrise: Summer sunrise is around 5:35 AM, autumn is around 7:04 AM In the village: Cars are completely prohibited; everything is done on foot Tips: Check the sunrise time for the day in advance and allow time for the cable car; bring a camera and tripod

#easytravelpost Kandersteg is the jump-off: train from Spiez or Brig, then a 15-minute walk (or bus 242) to the Oeschinensee gondola base. In peak season (mid-June to mid-Sept) the gondola opens 08:30 and the ascent uses timed slots—book online or you queue with 200 others at 09:00. Adult return is CHF 40 in summer, CHF 36 in shoulder season; Half Fare / Swiss Travel Pass halves it. From the top station it’s 25 min down a gravel path to the lake, or CHF 8–10 on the electric shuttle if your knees protest. The loop I actually recommend: lake shore → Oberbärgli climb (steep, 492 m gain over 8.4 km total) → Unterbärgli descent → back to the station. Three and a half hours, and the turquoise gets more absurd the higher you climb—Fründenhorn reflecting like a cracked mirror. Rent a wooden rowboat at the shore for CHF 15/30 min if you want the postcard angle without the hike. Swimming is legal but the water is glacier-fed; my toes went numb in 40 seconds. Common error: people ride up, snap the shore, ride down. They miss the Oberbärgli rim where the limestone cliff folds over the water like a wave frozen mid-break. Another error: not carrying 1.5 L water—the huts take card but the spring halfway up runs dry in dry summers. Discussion Point: Is a CHF 40 gondola + 3.5 hr loop “worth it” when the shore photo is free—or does the rim change the lake from pretty to primal?

#itinerarycheck I reached Bettmerhorn the way most people don’t bother to: on foot from Bettmeralp through the Great Aletsch Forest, not just by hopping the gondola and calling it a viewpoint. From Betten valley station (train from Brig on the Matterhorn–Gotthard line) I took the cable car to car-free Bettmeralp, then walked east past Bettmersee, through larch and Swiss stone-pine forest, up to Schönbiel and Hohbalm, and finally onto the rocky shoulder below the Bettmerhorn summit platform. The forest section is the part everyone skips, and it’s the best part—cool shade, grazing cows with bells, then suddenly the tree line breaks and the whole 23 km curve of the Aletsch Glacier drops away beneath you. Cable car Bettmeralp–Bettmerhorn one-way in 2026 was around CHF 15.60 if you already hold a valid mountain pass; full return from the valley runs closer to CHF 55. Swiss Travel Pass covers the train but only partially discounts the cable cars, so check the Aletsch Arena combined ticket before you buy piecemeal. Card payments everywhere; carry CHF coins only for public WCs. The final 30-minute climb from the gondola top to the Bettmerhorn summit cross is wired with cables and wooden steps—not a via ferrata, but not flip-flops either. I saw two people turned back in trainers because the rock was slick from overnight dew. Go before 10:00; by 13:00 the valley funnels cloud up and the Valais 4000ers vanish. September was quieter and the low sun lit the ice a dirty gold that photographed better than the postcard blue of July. Biggest mistake I made: trusting the village forecast. Bettmerhorn at 2,872 m sat in fog while Betten baked at 28 °C. Use the specific summit webcam, not the valley app. Also, the glacier trimlines on the side walls are now metres above the ice—stand on the platform, look left at the rock, then down at the tongue, and you’ll understand the retreat faster than any climate panel. The free “Glacier World” exhibit by the restaurant is worth 20 minutes. Water, wind layer, and closed shoes are non-negotiable even in August.

#kindnessontheroad #KindnessOnTheRoad #Switzerland #Matterhorn #GlacierExpress #AlpineTravel Traveling through the Swiss Alps in early October is a gamble with the weather. I learned this the hard way while hiking a short trail near Zermatt before boarding the Glacier Express. A sudden sleet storm left my lightweight hiking shoes soaked through, and by the time I boarded the train in Brig, my feet were blocks of ice. The Glacier Express is a premium panoramic train, and I felt incredibly self-conscious about potentially smelling up the carriage. I tucked my feet under the seat, trying to warm them discreetly against my thighs. Across the aisle sat an elderly Swiss couple, probably in their late seventies, dressed in immaculate traditional attire. After observing me shivering for about twenty minutes as we climbed toward the Oberalp Pass, the gentleman tapped his wife’s arm. Without a word, she reached into her impeccable leather tote bag and pulled out a small, battery-operated hand warmer, the kind used for hunting or skiing. But instead of just handing it to me, they gestured for my socks. I was mortified. I tried to refuse, but the woman gave me a stern look that suggested I shouldn't argue with a Swiss grandmother. She took my damp wool socks, wrapped them around the heater, and placed them back in her bag to avoid the smell. For the next hour, as we passed the icy Rhine Gorge, they didn't return them. Instead, they offered me peppermints and pointed out the Matterhorn as it emerged from the clouds. When we reached Disentis, they handed me back the socks—toasty warm and dry. They refused any money, simply saying, "Warm feet make a happy heart." It was a humbling reminder that in the world of high-end Swiss travel, the most luxurious thing isn't the first-class ticket; it's the quiet, dignified kindness of strangers who see your discomfort and fix it without making a fuss. Has anyone else experienced this level of "Swiss efficiency" in kindness?

The hotel staff were very kind, and it was great to be able to relax in the square right in front. Apparently the water from the nearby fountain is drinkable, so I tried it, but it just tasted like regular water. There's nothing else particularly special about the town, but this might be the best spot for a quiet getaway. The weather was nice around the area, but we couldn't see the upside-down Matterhorn. The lake was frozen. Other than that, it was a perfect 100. The views were great, the food was good. If you have the money, I highly recommend it.

I love the hotel. It's very conveniently located, right in the center, yet the room is quiet. I really enjoyed the breakfast. There's a bus stop nearby, all the shops and restaurants are within walking distance, and the train station is a 5-minute walk away.

To reach Bettmeralp, you need to take a cable car from Betten, which is at an altitude of about 1,200 meters. To get to Betten, you can easily take a train from Brig, a major transportation hub in the canton of Valais. Therefore, even if you can't drive directly, getting to Bettmeralp is quite convenient. From Zermatt, you can take a train directly to Brig, then transfer to the red train – the windows are open for a breeze! #NovemberDestinations2025 #SwitzerlandTravelPhotos #SwitzerlandAttractions #SwitzerlandTravel #SwitzerlandTravelGuide #SwitzerlandDestinations #SwissAlps #SwissTowns #Switzerland🇨🇭
