#asiabudgetchallenge Bukittinggi is one of Indonesia’s most charming highland towns — cool weather, green valleys, and Minangkabau culture everywhere. I visited the dramatic Sianok Canyon, wandered the Dutch-built clock tower area, and ate spicy rendang with a mountain view. What I loved most was how local and untouched it felt. No crowds, just friendly smiles, markets, and old colonial buildings with volcanoes in the distance. 📍Destination: Bukittinggi, Indonesia 💸Rough Budget: IDR 300,000–500,000/day (~$20–$35) 💡Top Tip: Hire a motorbike or local driver to explore nearby lakes and rice fields — they’re stunning and serene!

#asiabudgetchallenge Bukittinggi in West Sumatra is such a vibrant, culturally rich town. It’s surrounded by volcanoes, rice fields, and steep canyons — perfect for nature lovers and history buffs. I visited the Japanese WWII tunnels, stood at the edge of the Sianok Canyon, and tasted some of the spiciest rendang of my life. The city’s clock tower, Jam Gadang, is the main landmark and a great spot to watch local life. 📍Destination: Bukittinggi, Indonesia 💸Rough Budget: $20(guesthouse, angkot transport, local food) 💡Top Tip: Try nasi kapau at the local market — it’s the best introduction to Minang cuisine!

#localfood 📍Bika Dan Kawa Daun Tapi Talago, Bukittinggi, West Sumatera I was traveling to West Sumatera Province in Indonesia and exploring to the popular city called Bukittinggi which has some iconic building such as Jam Gadang and Rumah Minangkabau and also its scrumptious local food as my snack time during the trip. Serving local delights with its uniqueness by burning it inside the bowel and covered up by flaming wood. This is the uniqueness of this local food! They burn the food below the flaming wood, that is unusual! This local food called BIKA. In addition to complete this heaven's food, I also ordered KAWA DAUN as my drink. This is a beverage made from brewed coffee leaves such as tea originating from West Sumatera, Indonesia. Heaven in a bite! 🤤 #100WaysofTravel #indonesia #westsumatra

For the first time i visited this place, i can sure you that this place is super cozy. There are indoor and outdoor area for your comfort, slow music and excellent menus from 'em will not let you down👌 Small coffee shop but comfortable. Suitable for one who need to work away from office but need a cozy place. The only lack here is choice of snacks or food are limited to none. But im okay with that. This place just opened last year so it's kinda new. It's an industrial style coffee shop that offer various kind of coffee, tea and hot chocolate. I just wish they had some desserts too. In addition, they also have free wifi and both indoor and outdoor seating. So it's a good place for working alone with your laptop as well as chatting together with friends.

This is one of the best guest house I've ever been in Bukitttinggi! It's a bit hard to find but you can just use the map to go to the place or just use Waze. The house is cute and the surrounding is very peaceful. Their dining area is surrounded by flowers. They also have a walkway at the side going up where they planted lot of beautiful flowers along it and you can go up and take pictures there. The breakfast make you full enough and if you want to iron your cloth you can get it from the staff. The price is super cheap and the owner is very nice as well. If I were to come to Bukittinggi again, I definitely will come and stay here. 📍Bamboosa Guest House Bukittinggi #summervacation#hotelstay

Simpang Raya Jam Gadang is one of the many oldest resto in Bukittinggi, the food taste very authentic, also you can see jam gadang while eating here bcs this resto in front of it. This is also another attraction for visitors. The service was quite good. The food was relatively okay. The price was so affordable for 3 people with a complete menu. Their AYAM POP is highly recommended! So lucky if you u can get a window seat you can enjoy the Jam Gadamg view and the humming roads and traffic nearby! Great experience! Positively will go back! 📍Simpang Raya Jam Gadang Pasar Atas, Bukittinggi

The structure of this place is incredible, and the facade is spectacular. The name in Indonesian means “Istano Basa” means Big Castle, and it is a three-story building has been restored two times, after two fires destroyed it in the past. Make sure to get a guided tour; that way, you can learn more about the history of this amazing castle, one that definitely must be visited when you go to West Sumatra province. It is a characteristic building for the region. Here, you can also rent the traditional Minang costume to get pictures together with your partner or families 💙🌿🌤🏰 #roadtrip #urbanexplorer #summervacation #historicculture #summervacation#hikingtrails#urbanexplorer

Bukittinggi's natural beauty is always deeply missed, especially by Minang expats. Well, even in this AI era, we still need some time to heal and unwind. Here are a few highly recommended nature healing spots in Bukittinggi. 1. Taman Panorama Baru 2. Ngarai Sianok (Sianok Canyon) 3. Benteng Fort de Kock 4. Janjang Sejuta (Kampung Umma) 5. Puncak Lawang .

Bukittinggi West Sumatra Day trip to Bukittinggi, lovely drive up. Stopping off at the stunning waterfall, definitely a tourist spot. Great architecture of the buildings resembling the horns of the buffalo. Visited the King’s Palace, taking a couple of hours to look around as it’s a big area with stunning views of the mountains.

Morning begins with a thin mist still shrouding the courtyard of the Clock Tower. You stand there, just as the bells chime, watching the city slowly awaken. The cold air that bites your skin actually adds to the authentic atmosphere. As you leisurely stroll south, your steps take you through the gates of Panorama Park. Here, history seems frozen. You descend into the depths of Lubang Jepang, exploring silent alleys that hold memories of the past, only to emerge to the surface only to be greeted by the majestic Sianok Canyon stretching out from the cliff. Weary from wandering through the historical corridors, the aroma of roasted peanuts and spices begins to beckon. You return to town, sitting at a Padang Satay stall wafting fragrant smoke. Plates lined with banana leaves are served, filled with skewers of tender meat drenched in a thick, yellow sauce that's just the right amount of spiciness—a celebration of flavors that lifts the spirit. Toward evening, as the sun begins to set in the west, the journey continues, leaving the bustle of the market behind. The vehicle winds uphill towards the hills on the outskirts of town. You arrive at an aesthetic cafe with glass walls and an open balcony. There, you sit with a warm cup of coffee in your hand, gazing out at the expanse of green valleys and the silhouette of Mount Singgalang slowly turning orange. The day ends peacefully, the only sounds audible being the rustling of pine needles and your amazement at the beauty of the Minang land.

If you're in Bukittinggi, West Sumatra, you absolutely must stop by one of Bukittinggi's trendy cafes, Kukis Factories. Kukis Factories offers a variety of drinks, cookies, and a variety of croissants. There's indoor and outdoor seating for those who prefer to dine in. Kukis Factories is a great place for taking OOTD photos, and for those just wanting to hang out, it's also a nice and comfortable place. This cafe is open from 7 a.m. to 9 p.m. The service is excellent, with the staff friendly and very informative in explaining the menu. Of the several menu items I've tried, none of them were a disappointment; the sweet crunch and softness of the croissant are perfect for me. Prices start from 25,000 Rupiah. So, every time I go to Bukittinggi, I never forget to stop by because the croissants are that delicious. Kukis Factories is located on Jalan Adinegoro, Aur Birugo Tigo Baleh sub-district, not far from Bukittinggi's iconic building, the Gadang clock.
