This isn't a story of preserved grandeur, but of deep, layered history—the kind you feel in your bones when you explore alone. My Solo Itinerary: A Morning of Imagination 10:00 AM - The Mound of Memories I started at the heart of the village, where the remains of Caerleon Castle are found. To be clear, this is a classic "motte and bailey" site, meaning a large earthwork mound (the motte) is the main event. The stone castle that once crowned it is long gone. But standing at its base, looking up at the steep, tree-topped hill, I felt its presence more strongly than at some fully-intact castles. 10. 30 AM - Walking the Bailey I walked the perimeter of the flat bailey area, now a peaceful public green space. With no crowds, I could trace the outline of the former defenses in my mind. The information panel provided the blueprint, and my imagination did the rest, building wooden palisades and filling the space with the sounds of a Norman garrison. 11. 00 AM - Connecting with the Roman Past The true magic of Caerleon is its layers. The Norman castle was built here for a reason: it was the site of Isca, one of only three permanent Roman legionary fortresses in Britain. A two-minute walk from the castle mound brought me to the magnificent Roman Fortress Baths and the Roman Amphitheatre. Standing alone in the stone bowl of the amphitheatre, I could almost hear the roar of a forgotten crowd. It was a powerful, personal moment of connection—first with the Normans, and then with the Romans who walked here centuries before them.
