Wow, Caerphilly Castle is absolutely incredible! Standing here, gazing at its massive walls and the surrounding moats, you really get a sense of its sheer scale. It's so much bigger than I imagined, a proper medieval powerhouse. Exploring the towers and the impressive gatehouses, you can almost hear the echoes of knights and battles. And that leaning tower – how has it stood for so long?! It's beautifully preserved and incredibly atmospheric. It's a beautiful walk, you can see the original walls from all angles and the grassy area and moat provides. There will be lots of ducks and geese around too. It's around a 20 minute circumference walk around the walls and it's very enjoyable The ruins themselves are very impressive. Huge thick stone walls, windows with slots in, drawbridge, flags. This really gives an idea of what life would have been like here in the past. Where: Caerphilly, Wales UK When: July 2017 Wales is know for its historic castles and strongholds and while most are in ruins there is something magical about stepping on to the land where these majestic towers once stood. Some castles have more of the structures still standing than others but each still manages to tell a story of old (even if you have to use a little imagination to picture it). Caerphilly Castle still has a number of walls still standing, some showing the various levels and floors that stood 3-4 stories high. And there are still plenty of turrets and chambers you can climb around which is what we did one glorious afternoon in July 2017. This particular trip was made even more special by some visiting Welsh dragons Dewi & Dwynwen. At the time of our visit the Dragons were only in Caerphilly for a holiday but it appears that they have made the castle their personal lair. We very much enjoyed the tale of their love story on our visit and are glad to see they are still around. This is a perfect mix Fantasy and History and I can not wait to visit again. #gooutside

1. Gnoll Country Park, Neath 200 acres of woodland, Gnoll comes into its own in Autumn when the leaves turn golden. Trails, cascades, ponds & playground. Parking costs £3.75 for 4hrs 2. Llandaff, Cardiff Llandaff is very pretty this time of the year, especially the Cathedral & the Old Bishops Palace. I recommend the circular walk down along the River Taff behind the Cathedral. 3. Llanerch Vineyard Woodland, Hensol This small woodland can be explored fairly quickly however it’s a lovely place to enjoy the autumn leaves. Secure woodland, two lakes, perfect for families. 4. Parc Cern Onn, Cardiff A beautiful grade 2 listed historic park. You can expect a colourful autumn display. Free parking. Also connects to the longer Caerphilly Ridgeway mountain trail. 5. Forest Fawr, Nr Tongwynlais A scenic woodland packed with trails. One of our favourite places especially in Autumn when you can spot lots of fungi. Free parking. 6. Caerphilly Mountain One of the best places to watch the autumn sunset with stunning views across the Valleys. Family friendly circular route with trig point. Free parking. 7. Margam Park, Port Talbot 850+ acres to explore, great place for families to get outdoors. I recommend the Pulpit Trail which takes you to the Bro Stone viewpoint. Lots to do although parking is £8.90 per car for the whole day. 8. Ynysandharad War Memorial Park, Pontypridd “Ponty Park” as its know by locals is a lovely spot for an autumn wander with wooded areas, river, sunken garden & bandstand. You can also head up to Ponty Common from if you want a longer walk with incline (the views are worth it). Free & paid parking nearby. 9. Cardiff bay Barrage The Barrage is the perfect to enjoy the cooler months as it’s often less crowded than summer. Walk or cycle across the Barrage & treat yourself to a coffee at one of the many cafes. I also recommend visiting Cardiff Bay Wetlands. 10. Forest Farm Country Park, Cardiff A walk along the remains of the canal, looking out for kingfishers & enjoying the autumn leaves at Forest Farm is always a good idea. Having Wales largest Castle on our doorstep never goes amiss. Whenever I have a spare half hour and I’m nearby, I enjoy a relaxed walk around the outskirts of the castle as it’s such an impressive castle ruin and make’s a fantastic backdrop for a walk. It’s free and you get the see the castle from all different angles and the outside moat is impressive and filled with wildlife. There is also a new children’s nature playground and plaza offering lots of additional seating. You can also pop into @ffoscaerffili for a drink or bite to eat. This walk is also perfect for kids as there is plenty to see along the way, fantastic views across the castle, so much bird life on the moat, play area and nature, a win win all round. There is plenty of parking nearby - both paid (minimal charge) and free, depending on how far you want to walk. What I find really underrated is going for an evening walk around the moat of Caerphilly Castle which happens to be the largest Castle in Wales and the second largest in the UK (behind Windsor Castle) It’s quite expensive to go inside but you can walk around the outside of the moat for free and soak in incredible views of this stunning castle ruin. There are also plenty of benches and green spaces around the moat and plenty of ducks, swans and bird life. A walk near this castle never fails to impress and it’s a great free way to enjoy this place. You can do a 360 walk around which takes around 30mins and there is plenty of parking nearby as well as pubs to stop off and have a drink or snack #underratedspots

These are perfect for families across all the seasons. . Save this for a sunny day in South Wales and tick off some Welsh trig points! It’s surprising how having a physical goal to reach can really help motivate a person, especially kids. So if you want to start ticking off some Trig points but don’t know where to start here are 3 beginner friendly ones. . 1. Caerphilly Mountain Technically a hill but still offers up some fantastic views across Caerphilly and Rhondda Cynon Taff. There is an easy circular route from the Snack Bar carpark that takes you up to the Trig Point and around. We do this often and takes around 30mins although you can extend the route (see AllTrails for some ideas). . 2. The Garth Just over 1000 feet this is a fantastic first Trig for kids who like a bit of an adventure and challenge and the views across both Cardiff and the Severn as well as The Valleys is fantastic. There are many routes ranging in length but I would start with the AllTrails circular that takes around 1-1.5hrs. . 3. Twyn Y Gaer, Bannau Brycheiniog A lovely wander up along Mynydd Illtud to the Iron Age fort of Twyn Y Gaer with it’s fantastic Trip point and views of the surrounding mountains. The trail starts at the National Park Visitors Centre and takes around 1.5-2hrs. The circular route is on AllTrails . Of course there are plenty of others in and around South Wales but these 3 have always been personal favourites with the kids happy to join in. 1. Clydach Vale Countrypark, Tonypandy Stunning country park with waterfalls, mountains trails, lakes & nature. A beautiful spot all year round. Free parking, lakeside cafe & dog friendly. 2. The Billy Wynt, Llantrisant Perfect sunset vantage point. A short but steep walk up from the historic town of Llantrisant. You can also do the Hen Felin Wynt circular for a longer walk. 3. Pistyll-Goleu Waterfall, Llanwanno If you are looking for a quiet woodland walk away from the crowds, Llanwanno is a great choice with a 4 mile circular that takes in the Church, Reservoir & waterfall. 4. Craig Yr Alt, Nantgarw A hill lying just within the borough. Offers fantastic views across Cardiff & Valleys. Variety of ways to the summit including a circular that takes in Castell Coch. 5. Ynysangharad Park and Lido, Pontypridd Always love a wander around Ynysangharad War Memorial park, beautiful in every season with a fantastic playpark & is home to the National Lido of Wales. 6. Cynon Valley Museum, Aberdare This free museum is small but packs a punch with its exhibits on local welsh life & moving stories about the Welsh miners strikes. Aberdare Park is only a short walk away so combine the two. 7. Dare Valley Park, Aberdare A huge country park that has something for everyone. Biking trails, adventure playground, lakes, nature & mountain paths, we love it here. Free parking, cafe & dog friendly. 8. Pen Pych Waterfall, Treherbert One of my favourite Waterfalls in Wales. The walk takes you through gorgeous woodland & is suitable for all ages. Please make sure to take rubbish home, sadly there are issues with rubbish being left in the carpark. 9. Brynna Woods, Pontyclun A beautiful woodland with two circular walks, suitable for all ages & lovely wooden sculptures dotted throughout. A haven for nature and a very tranquil spot. 10. Barry Sidings Country Park, Hopkinstown We come here often as there is plenty to explore. The second largest castle in England, built in the 13th century. It's a 20-minute train ride from Cardiff Central to Caerphilly station, and a 10-minute walk from there. An entrance fee is required, but students can get a 20% discount, making it around £8.30. The museum shop sells Heartsease Farm elderflower sparkling water, which is delicious.

Vast moats and leaning towers rise from the water. I entered over the impressive wooden drawbridge, feeling like I was stepping into a history book. I grabbed a guidebook and decided to just wander, letting curiosity be my guide. 11. 00 AM - Towers, Halls & The Famous Lean I started by climbing the South-East Tower. The spiral staircases are narrow and steep, but the view from the top over the entire fortress and the town beyond is a worthy reward. Next, I explored the great hall and the state rooms, their fireplaces and windows hinting at past grandeur. Of course, no visit is complete without visiting the famous Leaning Tower. It leans more than the tower in Pisa! Standing beneath it is a dizzying, incredible sight. 1. 00 PM - A Picnic with a View I’d packed a lunch, and the castle grounds are full of perfect spots. I found a quiet bench on the outer bailey, with the mighty walls as my backdrop. It was the perfect solo moment to refuel and soak in the atmosphere. 2. 00 PM - A Walk on the Walls & Dam Feeling energetic, I walked the full circuit of the wall walls. This gives you a soldier’s-eye view of the defences. I then walked out across the dam that holds back the great lake, turning back for the definitive, picture-postcard view of the castle. Caerphilly Castle feels like a time travel. And at the free Cardiff Museum, you can even see the famous Blue Lady! And don't miss the Welsh cake, a treat only found in Wales. A fantastic day out at Europes 2nd largest castle. There are extensive grounds and ruins to explore, and a huge moat that you can walk around and enjoy on a sunny day .Inside the castle there are toilets, a picnic area and a gift shop but not much else. I understand that they're building a new cafe and eating area just inside the main gates .The leaning tower, which apparently leans further than the one in Pisa, is superb and make sure you get a picture where you're holding it up! #wales #castles #awesomepic #summervacation
