The Hemkund trail splits right from Ghangaria; it's 6 km, +1,200 m, paved most of the way, steady switchbacks through birch and finally alpine scree to the glacial lake at 4,329 m with the Sikh gurdwara on the shore. I left at 6 am, reached Hemkund at 9, and was back by 1 pm—then spent the afternoon on the Valley of Flowers spur (left fork from Ghangaria, 3 km to the core zone gate, 40 INR entry + 150 INR camera if they ask). The bloom was absurd: blue poppies, geraniums, anemones waist-high. Two warnings. One: Hemkund at 4,300 m gave me a pounding headache despite a night at Ghangaria—ascend slowly, carry diamox if prone to altitude sickness.
