Where to travel in the opposite direction in November? These places are less crowded and have beautiful scenery.
01 Haibei | Qinghai
In November, the grasslands of Haibei are a deep yellow, the snow line reaches halfway up the mountains, and the scenery transforms from green to a mix of yellow, white, and gray.
📍The Qilian Mountains are the easiest place to take great photos. Stubble grass against the backdrop of the first snow, the wind making the entire hillside sway, leaving only the sound of the wind in the stillness.
Ami Dongsuo is worth setting aside half a day for. The mountains are half Danxia landform and half snow. Take a shuttle bus to the viewing platform and then hike slowly. At an altitude of around 3,000 meters, you'll be out of breath if you walk too fast.
⚠️The roads may have thin ice in November, so don't set off too early if you're driving. Wait until the sun dries the curves before heading up the mountain.
The Heihe Grand Canyon is the kind of place where "one look is enough." The canyon is deep and the light is narrow; the light only penetrates around noon. ⏰11 am to 2 pm is the best time to visit. Lenglongling is at a higher altitude and is windy, so a down jacket and hat are essential.
Suggested itinerary: If you only have one day, focus on the Ami Dongsuojia Qilian Mountain Grassland route. The Lenglongling route is uncertain, so you can skip it. Don't waste time on the road just to get another viewpoint. Elderly people and children should pay attention to staying warm and managing altitude sickness; walking slowly is more important than completing the entire route.
02 Nanchong | Sichuan
Langzhong Ancient City is best explored in three sections over one day, without rushing.
⏰From 7:30 to 9:00 AM, the section from Zhongtianlou to Huaguanglou is mostly deserted. The cobblestones are still damp, and there's fog on the Jialing River, so you don't need to wait for empty shots for photos.
At noon, explore the alleys of the ancient city for food.
🍜Cold noodles with Baoning vinegar, sliced Zhang Fei beef, and a bowl of hot soup noodles can all fill you up for around 30-40 yuan per person. Shops on the main street are more expensive, but prices drop a bit further into the inner streets.
In the afternoon, visit the Imperial Examination Hall and Zhang Fei Temple, then climb Jinping Mountain for a panoramic view of the entire ancient city. The rooftops are a sea of gray, making it the most captivating angle in Langzhong. In November, Nanchong's daytime temperature is around 15 degrees Celsius, but it gets cool after sunset, so bring a light jacket.
At night, the ancient city transforms with the lights on; a stroll along the river is more pleasant than shopping.
🚄 It's about a ten-minute drive from Langzhong Station to the ancient city. Staying within the ancient city is convenient, but be prepared for limited soundproofing.
⚠️ Guesthouse prices fluctuate significantly on weekends; try to relocate to a weekday if possible, as there are far fewer people, resulting in a much less enjoyable experience.
03 Xianning|Hubei
The biggest pitfall in places like the Chibi Ancient Battlefield is thinking you'll spend a long time there. The core attractions are actually the Chibi headland, the cliff carvings, and the section along the river. Two hours is sufficient for a leisurely walk; the remaining time should be spent enjoying the breeze by the river.
Compare the two: If you want to see the actual artifacts and terrain, head straight to the rock face; the two large characters on the stone wall are the most significant feature. If you want to see the excitement and performances, check the showtimes in advance; don't rely on guides from years ago, as showtimes are subject to change.
⚠️The experience in the performance area and the non-performance area is quite different, so decide which you want beforehand.
In November, the river wind is strong, and the temperature on the rock face feels several degrees lower than in the city; a windproof jacket is more effective than a sweater.
⏰After 3 PM, the slanting sunlight shines on the stone wall, making the characters clearest, but by then, some people have left.
Regarding transportation, 🚄it's about a 40-minute taxi ride from Chibi North Station. Return taxis are difficult to book on the spot, so it's best to ask the driver for their contact information. If you're with elderly people, the steps on the rock face are few but right by the water, so walk slowly. Ticket prices and opening hours are subject to official announcements on the day; don't believe those offering "internal passages" at the entrance.
04 Xianyang | Shaanxi
Three questions to answer about your trip to Xianyang.
Is Qianling Mausoleum worth climbing? Yes, but it depends on your physical condition. The stele without inscription, the Shushengji stele, and the statues of the sixty-one foreign officials are all located on the main peak of Liangshan Mountain. The steps are numerous, and the entire ascent and descent takes over an hour.
⚠️It's windy on the mountain, and in November it feels significantly colder than in the city. Bring a hat and gloves. If you have mobility issues, you can view the stone carvings from below; there's no need to force yourself to climb.
What to eat in Yuanjia Village? This street, known for its Guanzhong Impression Experience, is more about snacks than main meals.
🍜Cheese, lamb blood soup, oil-splashed noodles, and guokui (a type of flatbread)—it's more economical to eat your way through than to sit down and order. Weekends in November are crowded; weekday midday is the most comfortable.
How to plan a day trip? Morning at Qianling Mausoleum, midday at Yuanjia Village (about an hour's drive between the two), afternoon leisurely exploring the village, and back to Xianyang before dark.
⚠️Don't believe claims of "access to the underground palace." The Qianling Mausoleum's underground palace has not been excavated. Walk away if you hear such sales pitches.
05 Dalian|Liaoning
It's more practical to break down recommendations by group.
For families with children, choose Tiger Beach Ocean Park. It's mainly indoor venues, and even with strong winds at the beach in November, it won't affect fish watching. Half a day to a full day is enough.
⚠️Check show times in advance and plan your route accordingly. Otherwise, the back-and-forth travel will be exhausting.
For a quiet autumn view, go to Tangli Lake Park. In November, the trees along the water are changing color, it's less crowded, and a walk around takes one or two hours. It's suitable for strolling and taking photos, but not for thrill rides.
If you only have half a day, dedicate it to Xinghai Square.
⏰From 4:30 PM to 5:30 PM, the sunset and the lights of the cross-sea bridge illuminate together, making this the most affordable spot for photos in Dalian. The seaside feels 3-5 degrees Celsius cooler than the city, and the wind blows horizontally, so a windproof jacket is more effective than a down jacket.
Jinshitan National Tourist Resort is suitable for a full day. The geological park area involves a lot of walking, and the sea breeze is strong in November, so don't forget your hat and scarf. A city-wide reminder: swimming is not recommended at the beach this month. You can look at the sea, but don't expect to swim.
06 Anshun | Guizhou
Let's talk about avoiding pitfalls first, then about what to do.
Huangguoshu Waterfall has less water in November than during the flood season. The advantage is fewer crowds and shorter queues, but the disadvantage is that the Water Curtain Cave may be temporarily closed due to water levels or maintenance. ⚠️ Refer to on-site announcements for confirmation; don't plan it as a must-see.
Escalators and electric carts within the scenic area are charged separately. Walking the entire route is quite physically demanding, so use them only as needed. Raincoats are cheaper outside the scenic area than inside, as rain can come unexpectedly in the mountains. Don't follow the people at the entrance who claim to "take you the shortcut"; there's only one official entrance.
Dragon Palace is accessed by boat. The cave is slippery and dimly lit, so wear non-slip shoes. In November, Anshun's daytime temperature is around 15 degrees Celsius, and it's even cooler inside the cave, so wear long sleeves and a jacket.
Trying to visit both in one day will be rushed; allocate at least four to five hours for Huangguoshu Waterfall.
🚄The journey from Anshun West Station to Huangguoshu Waterfall is about 40 minutes. Check the last bus departure time in advance. If you're traveling with elderly people or children, leave Huangguoshu Waterfall for the morning, when they have the most energy.
07 Guangzhou|Guangdong
November is the most comfortable time to visit Guangzhou. Daytime temperatures are around 25 degrees Celsius, not humid or sunny, and you won't sweat while walking. This is the best time of year to visit.
📍It's recommended to go up the Canton Tower in the evening, around 5 pm, to see both the sunset and the night view. Tickets are tiered; the Ferris wheel and the observation deck are not the same, so check before buying.
⚠️The rooftop outdoor activities may be suspended in strong winds, so please check before you go.
Chen Clan Academy is the most time-efficient and visually appealing of all Lingnan architectural sites. It's right next to Chen Clan Academy Station on Metro Line 1. Wood carvings, brick carvings, and stone carvings are crammed into one courtyard; you can leisurely spend an hour exploring. Afterward, stroll along the old town of Liwan District; you can eat your way through Pantang and Yongqingfang.
Baiyun Mountain is best climbed in the morning. Moxing Ridge offers panoramic city views. Those with less stamina can take the cable car up and walk down. Save Chimelong for families; November is much more relaxed than summer vacation.
🍜Don't eat dim sum at your hotel. Find a teahouse in the old town and order a variety of dishes like shrimp dumplings, rice noodle rolls, and chicken feet. It should cost around 60-70 yuan per person. If your itinerary is tight, skip Baiyun Mountain. A day trip to Guangzhou Tower, Chen Clan Academy, and the old town's food and drinks is just right.
08 Xinxiang | Henan
In November, the Taihang Mountains are past their peak autumn foliage, with persimmons hanging on bare branches – this is the scene you see all along the way.
Baoquan Tourist Area is a canyon with numerous pools and waterfalls. The water level has decreased somewhat in late autumn, making it crystal clear.
📍There's a shuttle bus from the entrance to the core section of the scenic area, saving your energy for the walking trails inside. Walking on the boardwalk, you can hear the water echoing through the valley, and the wind blowing in from the gorge is refreshingly cool.
Baligou has a different feel. The Hongshi River has a light reddish-brown water. The section near Tianhe Waterfall has many steps, so take your time. In November, the temperature in Xinxiang city is 5-15 degrees Celsius, and it's a few degrees lower in the mountains; bring a fleece jacket in the mornings and evenings.
⚠️It gets dark early in the mountains. It's safer to head towards the exit around 4 PM; don't be tempted to stay at the last viewing platform. If you have children, be careful of the gaps in the boardwalk railings, wear non-slip shoes, and be aware that fallen leaves on the stone slabs can be slippery.
The choice: You can only choose one per day. If you want to see water, go to Baoquan; if you want to see mountains, go to Baligou. Going to both will mean spending the whole time on the road.
The fun of traveling in the opposite direction in November is that while queuing at popular destinations, you can still hear your own footsteps echoing in these other places. If I really had to choose three, I would pick Haibei, Langzhong, and Anshun. Which ones have you been to? Let's chat in the comments.
