🚄 From Beijing to Inner Mongolia in Just 2.5 Hours! | How to Get to Chifeng Fast and Easy Chifeng is one of the gateways to beautiful Inner Mongolia — and the best part? It’s super easy to reach from Beijing! We went to China this October, and since Inner Mongolia was one of our main objectives, we decided to take the high-speed train from Beijing. Normally, it’s a 9–10 hour journey, but with China’s high-speed rail, it took us only around 2.5 hours. The ride was so smooth it felt like floating — plus, you get to enjoy the view of northern China’s rolling hills along the way. 🌾 We booked our tickets through Trip.com, and it’s honestly the most convenient way. You can even book before tickets are officially available , they helps queue for you so you can “chop” your seat before others. 🔹 Important tip: The train to Chifeng (and I think other Dongbei cities like Harbin) departs from Beijing Chaoyang Railway Station 北京朝阳, not the more famous Beijing Railway Station 北京火车站. Don’t go to the wrong station! Other travel tips: 1️⃣ Arrive at least 30 mins early — the station is huge and you’ll need to pass security check. 2️⃣ Just hand your passport to the station staff at the check-in gate. 3️⃣ You can store your luggage overhead or grab quick bites like cup noodles from the canteen car. 4️⃣ There’s a toilet onboard too (clean and modern). 5️⃣ Listen carefully for your stop — we almost missed ours because we got too comfy 😂 Welcome to Chifeng, the wild frontier of China. Take my advice: whatever you do, don't go to Ulan Butong in September–October. Because once you've been, you'll spend the whole next month staring at your office's gray ceiling, with nothing but birch forests and morning mist in your head. Don't ask me how I know. 1️⃣ Reasons to recommend (reverse psychology version) ① It's so photogenic. Anything you snap out the window with your phone is wallpaper-worthy; a nine-grid post on social media won't even be enough. ② Half the crowds of the National Day holiday, but ten times the autumn colors—a real hidden gem for those in the know. ③ Average daily visitor numbers in late September are significantly lower than in summer, so you won't have to fight for a spot to photograph the sunrise. 2️⃣ Best time to visit 🎯 Golden window: Sep 20–Oct 5 The birch trees are fully yellow, Wucai Mountain is a mix of red and orange, and there's morning mist almost every day. Sep 15–25 is the early autumn transition period. The grasslands are a mix of yellow and green, offering the best color layering with very few tourists—perfect for those who want to avoid the crowds. After Oct 5, it enters late autumn with fallen leaves everywhere. If you're lucky, you might even catch the first snowfall ❄️. 3️⃣ Transportation guide 🚗 Self-driving (recommended): From Beijing, take the Jingcheng Expressway > Weichang North > Ulan Butong, about 450 km, 5–6 hours. The scenery along the National Highway No. 1 Scenic Avenue is stunning, perfect for pulling over to take photos. An SUV is recommended, as some dirt roads in the scenic area can be rough on sedans. 🚄 High-speed rail + carpooling: Beijing Chaoyang Station > Chifeng Station takes about 2.5 hours. From there, carpooling to the scenic area takes about 2 hours and costs CNY 50–80/person. ⚠️ Don't just search for "Ulan Butong" on your GPS; set your destination to "Ulan Butong South Gate" or "North Gate," otherwise you might get routed through Saihanba and end up paying extra for tickets. 4️⃣ Must-visit spots in September–October 🍂 Wucai Mountain: In late September, layers of red, yellow, green, and purple spread out like God spilled a palette. The side lighting is softest from 8:30 AM–11:00 AM, maximizing color saturation. 🌊 Princess Lake: After 4:00 PM, the lake shimmers with blue-green light, and the birch reflections look like an oil painting. Wear a light-colored dress for effortless, stunning photos. 🌅 Hama Dam: The soul of the autumn scenery. Horses galloping through the water in the misty morning—use a telephoto lens to capture the herds returning; the shots are incredible. 5️⃣ Itinerary (3 days, 2 nights) Day 1 | Arrival + sunset Arrive at Hongshan Military Horse Farm in the afternoon to check in. In the evening, head to the Film and Television Base or General Paozi to wait for the sunset. The 20 minutes around sunset are the golden hour; the side-backlighting dyes the birch tree crowns gold. Use a telephoto lens to compress the layers for amazing shots. Day 2 | Chasing light + finding trees Depart at 5:00 AM for Toufenggou to see the sunrise and morning mist. Afterward, take a deep tour along Beigou to Wucai Mountain. In the afternoon, take a slow walk around Princess Lake. It's recommended to choose one with air conditioning and a private bathroom. 📸 Photography enthusiasts: Stay near Hulunuri Village or Tiantaiyong Village. You'll be right at the sunrise and morning mist spots when you step out the door, saving you from traveling in the early morning. ⚠️ Rooms are in high demand during peak season; book at least 10–15 days in advance. 8️⃣ Budget reference The all-access ticket is CNY 120/person, allowing unlimited entry within 3 days and covering core attractions like the Film and Television Base, General Paozi, Princess Lake, and Wucai Mountain. The total cost for 3 days and 2 nights is about CNY 1,500–2,000 per person (excluding round-trip transportation), including accommodation, meals, tickets, horseback riding, and off-road excursions. Budget options can be kept to CNY 700–800, while premium options are about CNY 2,000–3,500. 9️⃣ Tips to avoid pitfalls (the hard-learned version) ① Don't use roadside horse-riding touts! They quote CNY 50/hour, but after you get on, they add fees for leading the horse, taking photos, and overtime. The bill doubles in ten minutes, and there's no insurance. Go to a legitimate horse farm and confirm the total round-trip duration and insurance in advance. ② Strictly forbidden to drive on the grasslands! Herdsmen charge damages by the "blade of grass"—some tourists have paid as much as CNY 20,000. Stay on the main roads at all times. ③ Download offline maps! Cell signal on the grasslands is terrible. Make sure to return before sunset; there are no streetlights at night. ④ Dress in three layers (onion style): Temperatures can drop below 0°C in the morning and evening. Wear a thin down jacket + fleece liner + windbreaker. Choose waterproof, non-slip hiking shoes, as the grass is covered in frost and dew in the early morning. ⑤ Be cautious about buying cheap, loose beef jerky; prioritize tasting it in-store before purchasing. ⑥ Don't take photos at noon; the overhead light is harsh and creates heavy shadows. The drive between city attractions is generally about 1 hour.
