Normally, it’s a 9–10 hour journey, but with China’s high-speed rail, it took us only around 2.5 hours. Mulan Weichang is located in the transition zone between the Inner Mongolia Plateau and the northern Hebei mountains. On the vast rolling hills and grasslands, thousands of white windmills are scattered like stars, forming a spectacular and dreamy scene together with the leisurely grazing cattle and sheep and the clear blue sky. 01 Changzhou | Jiangsu Changzhou is a place where you can bring kids in summer and enjoy “fun without the sun.” At Universal Dinosaur City, don’t just focus on China Dinosaur Park. The nearby Dinosaur Valley Hot Springs are less crowded after 3 PM, with just the right water temperature. Kids soak in the water and don’t want to leave. The Spring and Autumn Yancheng Tourist Area is better suited for elementary school kids. Take the small train first to circle the three cities and three rivers to get familiar with the layout before exploring slowly, or kids will get tired halfway through. I suggest visiting Tianmu Lake on the second day. Arrive before 9 AM to catch the first boat ride while the lake is still misty. It’s cool and you won’t have to wait for photos. 🍜 For lunch, find a fish head restaurant by the lake. The clay pot fish head soup is milky white, and kids can eat two bowls of rice mixed with it. ⚠️ Dinosaur Park has long lines on weekends. If possible, visit on a weekday to avoid crowds. Remember to bring quick-dry clothes because there are many water park attractions and you’ll want to change if you get wet. 02 Lishui | Zhejiang Lishui is one of those “looks unremarkable but feels amazing once you get there” places. At Yunhe terraced fields, avoid the crowded viewing platform and walk the Qixing Dun trail instead. It’s higher in elevation and windy, so standing for 10 minutes cools you down in summer. Jinyun Xiandu is great for younger kids. The paths are flat and shaded. The stream at the foot of Dinghu Peak is shallow up to the knees, perfect for kids to splash around all afternoon. I recommend saving Qingtian Shimen Cave for last. The waterfall mist acts like natural air conditioning, but the steps are slippery, so elderly and very young kids should be cautious. ⏰ The sunrise at the terraced fields requires waking up at 4:30 AM. Don’t force kids who can’t get up. The light at 5 PM is just as beautiful. 🚄 It takes about 1.5 hours by taxi from Lishui Station to Yunhe terraced fields. A round-trip private car costs about 300 yuan, which is more convenient than taking the bus. 03 Baishan | Jilin Changbai Mountain has one core area but it’s worth ten times more. When bringing kids, don’t hesitate between the north and west slopes—go straight to the north slope. Attractions are concentrated, with shuttle buses, so less walking is needed. Whether you see Tianchi Lake depends on luck. The best chance is before 8 AM. After 10 AM, clouds usually cover it. If kids are very young, don’t force them to climb the steps. The Green Pool at the foot of the mountain is as cool as an underground forest, with gentle boardwalks and air that feels filtered. 🍜 Outside the mountain gate, try the hot spring boiled eggs. The yolks are fully cooked and the whites have a jelly-like texture. Kids find it novel. Three eggs cost 10 yuan. Buy a bag and peel them while walking. ⚠️ Weather on the mountain changes quickly. Raincoats are more practical than umbrellas. Rent one at the foot of the mountain for 20 yuan. Don’t think it’s expensive. July to mid-August is peak season. Book accommodations two weeks in advance or you’ll have to stay in Erdao Baihe Town, which adds an extra hour to your mountain trip the next day. 04 Wuzhong | Ningxia Wuzhong is a place many outsiders haven’t heard of, but it’s perfect for summer vacation. At Qingtongxia Yellow River Grand Canyon, kids usually only know the Yellow River from textbooks. Standing on the shore watching water rush out of the dam is more impressive than any documentary. There’s a 108-tower in the scenic area. Kids count the steps as they climb, reaching the top without getting bored. ⏰ After 4 PM, the light softens and the Yellow River water turns golden red. That’s when it looks best. ⚠️ Don’t walk around the canyon at noon. The sun is intense and your scalp will feel numb. Go to the visitor center to cool off in the air conditioning before heading back out. 🍜 In the city, lamb offal and hand-pulled lamb might be too gamey for kids, but beef noodles are safe. The noodles are thin and the broth is clear. A bowl costs 8 yuan. 05 Beijing When bringing kids to Beijing in summer, don’t expect to visit all attractions in one trip. Pick two or three. Book tickets for the Forbidden City at least seven days in advance. If you can’t get tickets, go to the Temple of Heaven instead. The Hall of Prayer for Good Harvests is more impressive in person than in photos. The park has many trees, and sitting in the long corridor in the afternoon is more comfortable than shopping malls. Choose either the Summer Palace or Beihai Park. I prefer Beihai Park because it’s half as crowded as the Summer Palace. Row boats and the White Pagoda keep kids entertained all afternoon. ⚠️ The Forbidden City is closed on Mondays. Don’t go for nothing. 🚄 The subway is the best way to get around the city. Take Line 2 to Qianmen Station and walk to the Meridian Gate of the Forbidden City. It’s faster than taking a taxi. ⏰ Go to the Temple of Heaven at 6:30 AM. The locals doing morning exercises haven’t left yet, so you’ll see the most authentic side of Beijing. 🎒 Parents with elementary school kids should show them two episodes of a Forbidden City documentary before visiting, or they’ll only remember the crowds and heat. 06 Chifeng | Inner Mongolia Chifeng is a personal favorite stop. Hasahatu Stone Forest has a tricky name but the scenery is straightforward—granite eroded by wind into various shapes. Kids’ imaginations are stronger than adults’. They see dinosaurs, castles, elephants, while you just see rocks. The scenic area is at high altitude, with an average temperature around 20 degrees Celsius in July. You’ll need a light jacket in the morning and evening. ⏰ Enter the scenic area at 2 PM for the best lighting. The sun shines from the side, casting long shadows from the stones, creating great photo depth. 🍜 After the scenic area, head toward Keshenketeng Banner. There are Mongolian restaurants by the roadside. Kids might not like the Mongolian milk tea with cream skin, but no one can resist the roasted lamb chops. ⚠️ There’s no shade in the scenic area. Sunscreen and hats are a must. Don’t slack off just because it’s cloudy. 07 Yingtan | Jiangxi Yingtan’s Longhu Mountain is all about water in summer. You must take the bamboo raft ride. It lasts about 40 minutes. You can dip your feet in the water, and the coolness rises from your feet. Kids get so excited they can’t sit still. The water in Luxi River is so clear you can see the pebbles at the bottom. You can stop at the shallow shore to let kids skip stones. ⏰ The best time for rafting is before 10 AM when the sun isn’t too strong and there’s a breeze on the water. ⚠️ Don’t buy “wild kudzu powder” at the scenic area entrance. It tastes the same as supermarket brands but costs three times as much. 🍜 In Shangqing Ancient Town, try the chestnut tofu. It’s slightly sweet and kids can eat it as a snack, which is healthier than chips. If kids have good stamina, hike part of the Elephant Trunk Mountain boardwalk. It takes about an hour and offers wide views of the entire Danxia landform. 08 Nujiang Lisu Autonomous Prefecture | Yunnan Nujiang isn’t really suitable for first-time family trips to Yunnan, but if kids are in upper elementary grades, it will leave a lifelong impression. Bingzhongluo is called a place where “humans and gods coexist.” The viewing platform at Nujiang First Bend requires no hiking—just a two-minute walk from the car. Kids will be fascinated by the grandeur of the bend. Nanjiluo is more primitive and requires a three-hour round-trip hike. The trail is average, so don’t push kids with low stamina. ⏰ July and August are rainy seasons. After rain, clouds wrap around the mountains like a fairyland, but the paths are slippery. Non-slip shoes are a must. ⚠️ The altitude difference here is large. If kids complain of headaches, stop and rest immediately. Don’t push through. 🍜 The stone slab pancakes in Bingzhongluo Town are made with highland barley flour and baked crispy. Kids can eat two if they’re hungry. 🚄 It takes about four hours by private car from Liuku, the Nujiang prefecture capital. The mountain roads are winding, so bring motion sickness medicine in advance. Among these eight places, my personal top three are Changzhou, Lishui, and Chifeng. The grassland has a big temperature difference between day and night, so bring a jacket even in summer. Attractions are spread out, so it’s best to rent a car or join a local small group. Use sunscreen! UV rays can darken your skin by two shades in one day. Check prices in advance for horseback riding and off-road activities. Wulanbutong tickets cost 120 yuan for 3 days, covering multiple attractions. After three days, the scenery was worth the ticket price, and the prices were a pleasant surprise. Take the electric cart to Cave 20, where the outline of the outdoor Buddha against the blue sky is especially stunning. Elementary school kids will ask how the stone was carved. Tell them simple stories, like how craftsmen hung from ropes working on the cliff. Their eyes will light up. Visit Hanging Temple after 4 PM when the light hits the wooden walkways at an angle—no filter needed for photos. ⚠️ Parents afraid of heights don’t have to go up; looking up from below is spectacular enough and saves you from being teased for weak knees. Mount Heng in the north is for families with good stamina. Take the cable car up and then hike a short distance. Kids will shout, “It’s really on fire!” There’s a thermometer-shaped sculpture for photos. After that, leave before noon to avoid the heat. Plan to visit Kumtag Desert after 6 PM when the sun is low and the dunes look soft and graceful. Rent a sandboard and slide down from the top. The wind rushes past your ears, and kids won’t want to leave. ⚠️ Don’t wear sandals in the desert; the sand is hot. Shoe covers are available for rent at the entrance for 10 yuan a pair—don’t skip this. Turpan city itself is great to explore. The grape valley has plenty of shade under the vines. Babies might find the heat too much, so it’s best to skip. 03 Zhangye | Gansu The colorful Danxia landform is best visited at dusk. Enter the park at 5:30 PM when the sun starts to set. The reds, yellows, and greens look like a spilled palette. There are four viewing platforms, and the sightseeing bus stops at each in order. Don’t linger too long at the first platform; platforms 2 and 4 have the best views. Watch the sunset from platform 4 as the light slowly creeps over the ridges. Kids will quiet down, mesmerized by the flowing colors. ⚠️ It’s windy on the platforms. Secure your hat and hold your phone tight—if it falls, you won’t get it back. The next morning, visit Matisi Temple. The Tibetan Buddhist grottoes are carved into cliffs. Climbing the 33 caves requires using hands and feet on narrow ladders. It’s like an adventure for 6- or 7-year-olds but not recommended for seniors. Zhangye Great Buddha Temple is in the city. It’s cool inside, and the reclining Buddha is 34.5 meters long. Kids look tiny standing next to it, which makes a lasting impression. Lixian Ancient City is far from downtown and can be skipped if short on time. I recommend staying near the Danxia entrance overnight. The morning mist softens the mountain colors even more than the afternoon. 04 Zaozhuang | Shandong Tai’erzhuang Ancient City is a place to “see water by day and lights by night.” With kids, enter after 3 PM when the sun isn’t so strong. Start with a boat ride on the canal. The boatwoman hums a tune as the boat passes stone arch bridges. The cool breeze on the water makes kids reach out to splash, laughing happily. The General’s Office and Tianhou Temple inside the city are worth a visit. They have air conditioning, perfect for a cool break. 🍜 Have dinner on the food street. Vegetable pancakes are a local specialty—thin pancakes filled with various vegetables, cooked crispy on a griddle. They cost 10 yuan each, and kids will eat them messily but happily. ⚠️ Don’t miss the 8 PM light show, but arrive 10 minutes early to claim a spot in front of Fuxing Tower. Otherwise, you’ll only see heads. The ancient city suits all ages and is stroller-friendly. The stone paths are smooth, but it gets crowded at night, so hold your kids’ hands. Prices are a bit high but worth it. 05 Anshan | Liaoning Qianshan is a place where “the mountain isn’t high but the trail is long,” ideal for families with good stamina. Enter at 8 AM from the main gate. Take the electric cart to the Caishen Temple, then start hiking. The mountain is heavily shaded, and cool breezes come every few steps, making it several degrees cooler than the city. Kids love the “pinched stone” path, where two large rocks leave only a narrow gap to squeeze through sideways. They find it thrilling. Wuliangguan’s ancient buildings are tucked in a mountain hollow. The red walls and gray tiles are so quiet you can hear birdsong. ⏰ Have lunch at a pavilion on the mountain with your own packed food. Avoid the park restaurants—they’re expensive and average. After descending, visit the Jade Buddha Garden to see the huge jade Buddha statue. It’s cool inside and a good place to rest. ⚠️ Qianshan has many steps, so it’s not stroller-friendly. Use a baby carrier for infants. Kids 7 or 8 and older can complete the hike fine. Just wear non-slip shoes because the descent can be slippery. 06 Chifeng | Inner Mongolia Hasahatu Stone Forest is a place that “doesn’t look like Earth at first glance.” Granite stone pillars rise from the grassland in all kinds of shapes. Kids will point and say some look like turtles or elephants, sparking their imagination. It’s windy and feels much cooler than the city. In August, you might even need a light jacket. ⏰ Arrive around 9 AM when the light is perfect and the stone textures are clear for photos. There’s a sightseeing bus, but the last stretch requires walking. The stone paths are smooth enough for seniors. 🍜 Have hand-pulled meat at the Mongolian yurt restaurant at the park entrance. The meat is tender and dipped in chive flower sauce. Kids will get their hands greasy eating it. In the afternoon, visit nearby Gongger Grassland. Let the kids run wild on the grass, chase grasshoppers, and watch cattle and sheep. It’s more fun than any playground. ⚠️ There are many mosquitoes on the grassland, so bring insect repellent. Stay overnight in Chifeng city, where accommodations are much better than near the park. 07 Anqing | Anhui Tianzhu Mountain feels like “air conditioning in summer.” Enter from the south gate and take the cable car halfway up. The rest of the hike winds through pine forests and strange rocks. Mountain breezes come in bursts, drying sweat quickly. Kids love the “Hundred-step Cloud Ladder.” The steps are steep but have chains on both sides. Climbing it with hands and feet gives a great sense of achievement. The mountain lake at the top is a clear pool. Rest on a rock by the water and watch the distant sea of clouds roll by. All frustration melts away. ⏰ Descend before 2 PM for good light and to avoid thunderstorms. ⚠️ Weather changes quickly in the mountains. Bring a raincoat. It costs 20 yuan at the summit and 10 yuan at the base. 🍜 After descending, eat local specialties like mountain rice balls with braised pork in Qianshan town. The rice balls are chewy, and kids will love them. This trip suits kids in elementary school and older. Younger kids might get tired hiking the whole way. You can take the cable car to Liandan Lake and turn back. 08 Xiamen | Fujian Gulangyu Island is best in the morning. The 7:30 AM ferry is less crowded. The breeze on Sunlight Rock still carries the sea’s salty scent. Head straight to Shuzhuang Garden, which has a piano museum. Kids will be curious about the old pianos. The island’s shady alleys have mango ice stands every few steps. A cup costs 10 yuan. Eating and strolling is very relaxing. ⚠️ Don’t eat full meals on the island—they’re expensive and average. Return to Xiamen’s main island for satay noodles at noon. In the afternoon, visit Xiamen Botanical Garden. The rainforest section sprays mist on a schedule, making it feel like a fairyland. After running across vast grasslands and visiting pure Gobi deserts, Yulong Shahu’s mixed landscape still hits differently. Having seen too many repetitive sceneries, arriving here reveals how desert, lake, and grassland can blend into one world. The city’s daily tension slowly eases with a breeze carrying grains of sand. The summer here feels comfortable, with daytime and nighttime temperatures mostly between 17 and 23℃. Unlike the big desert’s constant heat, it’s perfect for couples to stroll slowly. Three days is just right—no need to rush or sprint, focusing on relaxation and unwinding. As for transportation, most visitors first arrive in Chifeng city, then drive or book a car on Trip.com for the 1.5-hour drive. The road is good, and you can watch the grassland gradually transition into sand dunes along the way. Public transport is inconvenient, so we don’t recommend taking a bus. Traveling as a couple by private car or self-driving offers the most freedom—you can stop anytime to take photos of the lake. Tickets can be purchased online on Trip.com and scanned at the entrance, saving time waiting in line. For accommodation, we personally tested nearby guesthouses for two people, priced between 240 and 380 yuan per night, with plenty of options. Some are very close to the park entrance, within walking distance, quiet at night, with windows overlooking distant dunes.
