2026 Cholula Travel Guide: must-see attractions, popular food, hotels, transport & travel experiences (updated in July)

Sharing our 6–8 day itinerary for Mexico City (CDMX) + Puebla. In short, spend exactly 4 full days in CDMX and use the remaining time in Puebla. 🗺️ CDMX 4-day tour 1. 🏛️ Constitution Square: Mexico City Metropolitan Cathedral (P1-3), Templo Mayor Museum (P4-5), National Palace (note that on-site registration for same-day entry starts at 10 AM). If you enjoy Mexican mural culture, you can also visit Museo Vivo del Muralismo and the Former College of San Ildefonso. There’s also Palacio Postal and the Palace of Fine Arts. 2. ☀️ Teotihuacan (P6): No need to say more, it’s Mexico City’s top attraction. 3. 🗿 National Museum of Anthropology (P7-9): If you only visit the first floor, it takes about 4 hours. If you’re short on time, just see Teotihuacan, Aztec, Olmec, and Maya exhibits for a little over 2 hours to get through quickly. From there, walk to Chapultepec Castle (P10-11), which requires climbing a small hill for about half an hour. Touring the castle takes about an hour and a half. 4. 💙 Blue House (Frida Kahlo Museum): Book tickets in advance! Puebla’s main attraction is the old town, the Historic Centre of Puebla, a small city full of various churches (P16-17). Recommended spots: Catedral de Puebla (P15), Museo Amparo (a very charming small museum). If you have an extra day, you can visit Cholula, about a half-hour drive from Puebla. Its pyramid is the largest in the world, but most of it is buried under a hill because the Catholic church on top (P13-14) cannot be excavated. Also, there are two volcanoes 🌋 near Cholula. If the weather is good, you can see them from the summit (we visited during the rainy season, so only early morning had a chance to see them, but we slept in). Some tips: 1. In CDMX, consider staying in Roma and Condesa, the areas of Mexico’s wealthy elite. There will be some free time during the 4 days in CDMX to return to your accommodation area to enjoy coffee or stroll in the park. We recommend Rosetta’s bakery. 2. CDMX airport has a direct bus to Puebla with wifi on board. It feels comfortable and safe. 3. Summer in Mexico is the rainy season, but daytime weather is usually fine. Rain typically starts around 3 or 4 PM, so it doesn’t greatly affect the travel experience and even helps avoid the intense sun at Teotihuacan.

Starting the day with bakery items and coffee, Barbarista has long been a tried-and-tested spot, especially when I just want something reliable and familiar before heading into plans or meeting friends. During the FIFA World Cup season, though, it took on a slightly different role with match-day hours and screening setups, which naturally started drawing in more football fans. That’s when it really became a nice gathering point. A group of us ended up meeting there before a match, and it worked perfectly for that in-between time—good, affordable food, easygoing atmosphere, and plenty of space to just settle in and talk football before kickoff. It never felt overdone or overpriced, just straightforward and enjoyable, which is exactly why it stood out as a solid hangout for fans to come together and share the excitement. #footballfanculture

Last year's trip, reposted this year! A 3-day trip to Puebla, Cholula, and Atlixco is perfectly adequate! For those who speak Spanish, have a moderate budget, and aren't looking for must-see attractions! 1. Round-trip bus fare from Mexico City's Taxqueña station to the ADO station is approximately 300 pesos per ticket. 2. Accommodation: We stayed at a hostel that was exceptionally nice, clean, safe, conveniently located, and inexpensive. It was right on Callejón de los Sapos street, making it very convenient to get around (p2). However, it was a mixed-gender (6 people per room) accommodation! Recommended to book online in advance. Address: [Avenida 3 Oriente 627 Centro Histórico 72000 Puebla de Zaragoza, Puebla] 3. Itinerary Recommendation: We had a three-day trip. Day 1: Arrive at noon, explore Puebla city center in the afternoon, take a taxi to Choluula to watch the sunset over the volcano, and take a taxi back in the evening. Day 2: Visit the Puebla Museum during the day, take a taxi to Atlixco to see the Christmas lights around sunset, and take a taxi back in the evening. Day 3: Fill in any gaps in your itinerary during the day, and return to Mexico City in the afternoon. 4. Local Food Specialties: Cholupas and various flavors of mole sauce 🔆Day 1 (Noon/Afternoon): Puebla city center • Route Recommendation: Start from callejón de los sapos and wander around until you reach Centro Histórico. Actually, the items sold in each shop are pretty much the same. You can buy some local specialty candies (Muegano Poblano/ Tortita de Santa Clara (extremely sweet but delicious)/ Polvorón) Semilla (I found it unpalatable). Shelf life is 1-3 months. Recommended souvenirs: Talabera ceramics!! (fridge magnets/ornaments/wine glasses/salt shakers/earrings). Buy several items and you can negotiate the price with the shopkeeper. 🔆Day 1 Afternoon & Evening: Cholula 1. Route Recommendation: Take a taxi to 【Calle 5 Norte 307 San Juan Aquiahuac 72810 San Andrés Cholula, Puebla】 Then walk uphill to enjoy the sunset over Popocatépetl, Mexico's second largest volcano – great for photos! 2. Restaurant: We randomly went to a quiet restaurant, but the food and prices were pretty good!! "Are we going to climb that mountain with a church?" I believe many friends will ask this question when they come to Jolulla🤔. But actually... what you're preparing to climb is not an ordinary mountain! It's definitely worth a trip to see the shock of the ancient civilization. 💥Act 2 | Suspense on the Hilltop: Church of the Assumption of Our Lady In the 16th century, the Spanish came and wanted to completely disintegrate the indigenous beliefs, so they used the stone of the pyramid to build the "Iglesia de Nuestra Señora de los Remedios" (Iglesia de Nuestra Señora de los Remedios) at the top. Such an unconventional approach is not only suspense, but also a "double conquest" of civilization... However, now after hundreds of years of locals both worshiping the Virgin Mary and revering the ancient spirits of the hills, it has become the most vivid representative of Mexican mixed-race culture.
