After reading numerous travel blogs, we decided to start from the southern end at Hags Head. The Cliffs of Moher Coastal Walk is a 13 km trail that stretches between Hags Head and Doolin. The path follows the cliff edge for most of the journey, rewarding hikers with breathtaking views of the towering cliffs, rugged coastline, and the Atlantic Ocean. Although the trail is not technically difficult, the terrain is uneven, muddy in places, and filled with water puddles after rain. More importantly, it is completely exposed to the elements. Strong winds and sudden weather changes are common, and much of the trail has no protective fencing along the cliff edge, so extra caution is essential. As we made our way along the trail, the weather gradually deteriorated and the wind became increasingly fierce. There were moments when my four-year-old son and I had to run because the gusts were literally pushing us forward. A few times, we even squatted down and hugged each other to steady ourselves, genuinely worried that the powerful wind might knock us off balance. Whenever possible, we moved closer to the farmland and held onto the farm fences instead of walking near the cliff edge. The puddles and muddy ground were a small price to pay, and thankfully our waterproof shoes kept our feet dry. It certainly felt much safer than walking closer to the cliffs in such extreme conditions. We were incredibly relieved when the Visitor Centre finally came into view and we started seeing more people walking from the opposite direction. Just as we thought the adventure was over, a huge gust of wind blew my beanie right off my head! 😂😅 Catching it turned into a hilarious game. Every time we got close, another gust would send it flying away again, almost as if it was teasing us. One kind visitor walking towards us even joined the chase, making a spectacular dive to catch it like a goalkeeper saving a football from crossing the goal line. It was such an unexpected and funny moment that we still laugh about it today. We ended our walk at the Visitor Centre as the rain had started to fall, and we felt it was the right time to call it a day. Our visit began with a scenic 1-kilometre coastal trail from the visitor car park to the rope bridge. The round-trip walk takes around 40 minutes and is just as memorable as the bridge itself. The path winds along dramatic sea cliffs with breathtaking views of the rugged coastline before descending a series of steep stone stairways towards the bridge. We visited in December when the weather was cool and cloudy with only a light breeze, making the walk especially enjoyable.It felt peaceful in a way that contrasted sharply with the more dramatic conditions we’d experienced at the Cliffs of Moher. The rope bridge itself is around 60 feet (20 metres) long, so the crossing lasts only about 20 seconds. Although we expected it to sway from side to side, it was surprisingly stable, with only a gentle bounce underfoot. Visiting during the off-season also meant we could walk straight across without waiting. During the peak summer months, however, it’s common to queue before crossing in both directions. Once across, don’t rush back. Take some time to explore the walking trails on the tiny rocky island. You’ll get some lovely views of the water and sea cliffs and also old fishermen’s cottage that remains on the island.
